London, Aug 3 (PTI) Harry Brook made his 10th Test hundred and Joe Root a determined unbeaten 98 as England reached 317 for four at tea on day four, within sniffing distance of the 374-run target set by India in the fifth Test here on Sunday.
At the break, Root and Jacob Bethell (1) were at the crease with the home side needing a further 57 runs for a memorable win and a 3-1 series victory.
Brook (111 off 98 balls) and Root added 195 runs for a brilliant fourth-wicket stand that ran the Indian bowlers ragged.
Brook brought up his 10th Test century in his 50th innings to be placed 9th on a list that is headed by Don Bradman, who achieved the feat in just 23 innings.

Daily Briefing: The next era of Indian cricket

Good morning! We begin today with a chilling case that seems right out of a Netflix thriller. Sample this: Jain Mathew, 55, went missing in December last year. For months, the police investigation hit a dead end — until two weeks ago, when someone used Jain's mobile phone to make a call. That single call led police to a surprising suspect: 68-year-old Sebastian, a wealthy man who hadn't even been on their radar. His arrest triggered a chain of revelations. Investigators could connect Sebastian to three other missing women cases, spanning nearly 20 years: Bindu Padmanabhan (2006), Aysha (2012), and Sindhu (2020). He was arrested after police recovered charred remains from a pit on his property. My colleague Shaju Philip has more details. On that note, let's get to the rest of today's edition. The young guns have done it! The England vs India Test series ended in a stunning 2-2 draw after both sides fought tooth and nail to secure victory. England was chasing 35 runs and India had four wickets to take at the start of the match on Monday. It was bowlers Mohammed Siraj and Prasidh Krishna's time to shine. One by one, the wickets fell, until England was just six runs away from a 3-1 victory. And they were willing to fight till the end. Chris Woakes was at the pitch with a dislocated shoulder, his one arm in a sling. All they needed was a shot over the ropes. Then Siraj, the tireless warrior, stepped in with a deadly yorker, handing England a crushing defeat. The series will go on to define the next era of Indian cricket. This was the first Test series without stalwarts like Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli and R Ashwin. But the young team showed that they didn't miss the retired batting giants. When India's trusted fast bowler Jasprit Bumrah had to be rested, Siraj stepped up, leading the bowling attack. Later, Siraj would reveal how he manifested the win with a phone wallpaper with just one word: Believe. Moreover, Shubhman Gill came into his own as the captain, showing he could be both Kohli and Sharma. But he also showed that he wasn't either of them. The coach, Gautam Gambhir, and the selectors would involve him in the selection process, allowing him to take the final call. Read national sports editor Sandeep Dwivedi's riveting profile of Gill and how his hunger for perfection keeps him going. The English camp would have plenty of takeaways as well. As Sriram Veera points out, England must now reckon with the reality that their much-hyped Bazball philosophy may have done more harm than good. If anything, this young Indian team has exposed the mediocrity of the cricketing approach that Ben Stokes and his side continue to champion. Political activity has resumed, but questions of full statehood hang heavy on the government. The recent Pahalgam terror attack has exposed gaps in the 'normalcy' narrative. We take a comprehensive look at the past six years. In our Opinion pages, meanwhile, Haseeb A Drabu, former finance minister of J&K, spotlights how the abrogation belied promises of economic prosperity, when in reality the UTs face a growth slowdown and high unemployment rates. Read. Unfair: Amid US President Donald Trump's criticisms of India's purchase of Russian oil and the subsequent tariff threats, New Delhi has issued a sharp response. A statement by the Ministry of External Affairs asserted that the targeting of India was unjust and unreasonable, given that the US and the European Union continue to trade with Russia. Meanwhile, as an India-US trade deal remains elusive, and the tariff deadline (August 7) looms near, one question is resonating in New Delhi's policy circles: What does a bad deal look like? The answer lies in the US-EU trade agreement, which is now being seen as a lopsided arrangement. Eye-opening: As eyewear unicorn Lenskart prepares for its Initial Public Offering (IPO), it filed the draft red herring prospectus (DRHP), aiming to raise Rs 2,150 crore through a fresh issue. Beyond its financials, the DRHP offers a lens into India's $10-billion eyewear market, one shaped by worsening eyesight among children, too much screen time, and too few optometrists. 'What did Rishabh Pant show you?' Sunil Gavaskar hits back at workload management issue after India's Oval win

Legendary Sunil Gavaskar cited Rishabh Pant and Mohammed Siraj's example at the workload management issue after India drew the five-match Test series against England 2-2 following Shubman Gill's men's six-run win at The Oval on Monday. The 'workload management' which came in the last decade has become an significant aspect among all the teams across the world. Backed by science and analysis, the workload management determines how many matches a players should play in a series to keep themselves injury-free. Although nothing specified, Gavaskar's comments came after Jasprit Bumrah played just three Tests against England, as a part of his workload management. Putting his views after the series, the former Indian captain hoped the 'workload' word gets taken out of Indian cricket dictionary. 'Mohammed Siraj debunked forever this business of workload," Gavaskar was quoted as saying to India Today. 'For 5 Test matches, non-stop he has bowled 7-8 over spells, because the captain wanted him and the country expected of him,' added Gavaskar. The 76-year-old also opined that workload is a mental thing and not a physical thing. 'If you are going to succumb to people who are talking about workload, then you are never going to have your best players on the field for your country,' added the living legend. If Siraj debunked the word workload by featuring in all the five Tests and taking 23 wickets, Pant showed the spirit of a true warrior. Despite fracturing his toe on the first day of the Manchester Test, the wicket-keeper batter came out to bat, after taking painkillers. He was subsequently ruled out of the fifth Test at The Oval. 'When you are playing for your country, forget the aches and the pains. On the border, do you think that the jawans are complaining about cold? What did Rishabh Pant show you? He came out to bat with a fracture. That is what you expect from the players. Playing cricket in India is an honour," concluded Gavaskar. The whole Indian team will get ample rest fin August with no international fixtures. India would have played a few games, but their tour of Bangladesh was rescheduled to September 2026 due to the political situation in the neighbouring country. India next play Asia Cup in September followed by a home Test series against West Indies.

Shashi Tharoor lists India's standout performers in ENG series, sends Sarfaraz Khan reminder to Gautam Gambhir

Lok Sabha MP Shashi Tharoor has shared his key takeaways from the recently concluded India vs England Test series where the Shubman Gill led side managed to match the series 2-2 after a famous win at The Oval on Monday. While the Indian parliamentarian was happy with the performance of a number of Indian players including the skipper himself and pacer Mohammed Siraj, he also sent a timely reminder to Gautam Gambhir and BCCI about some of the shortcomings of the side. Focusing on his takeaways from the series, Tharoor wrote in a post on X (formerly Twitter), "Takeaways for #TeamIndia after #INDvsENG : Gill's batting; Siraj's bowling;Jaiswal's flowering;Rahul's steadiness;Pant's brilliance;Washington's versatility; Jadeja's reliability;Prasidh's & AkashDeep's improvement." ' Still need to find: a strong middle order bat capable of taking the fight to the opposition: remember @sarfarazkhan977?; more pace-bowling backups for @Jaspritbumrah93; & a fast-bowling all-rounder in the @hardikpandya7 mould (but with the gumption to face the rigours of Test cricket). Chak De India! 🇮🇳 @BCCI @GautamGambhir' Tharoor added. The India - England series came to a nail biting finish at The Oval with just 7 runs remaining for the hosts to win while the last batter Chris Woakes on the crease with a sling on for his dislocated shoulder and Gus Atkinson swinging his bat to get to the finish line. Mohammed Siraj, however, stood out for the visitors as he finished the match with a 143kmph delivery on the base of off stump to decastle Atkinson and win the match for India while levelling the series 2-2. Going in to the series, not many cricketing pundits had given the young team led by Gill a chance with veterans like Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli out of the side after their retirement. The new look India side have punched above their weight with some player or the other standing up in each game to keep India alive in the series. India had lost the first match at Leeds but then came back strongly to level the series at Edgbaston. However, a heartbreak for Indian fans at Lords saw England taking the lead once again in the series. While it looked like England would take a 3-1 lead in the series at Manchester, Ravindra Jadeja and Washington Sundar batted almost a whole day to see the match end in a draw.
