This vision of the future is becoming increasingly real thanks to advancements in autonomous driving technology. Stellantis, the parent company of brands like Dodge, Jeep and Chrysler, has just unveiled its STLA AutoDrive 1.0 system, which the company hopes will soon revolutionize the way we drive.
Stellantis has developed its cutting-edge Level 3 automated driving system. This innovative technology allows motorists to safely take their eyes off the road and hands off the wheel. Stellantis' STLA AutoDrive 1.0 system is designed to handle driving tasks autonomously at speeds of up to 37 mph in traffic and on highways under certain conditions. This means drivers can potentially engage in activities like watching movies, reading books or catching up on emails during their commute.
The system will manage steering, acceleration, braking and maintain safe distances from other vehicles without human intervention.
However, there's a catch: Despite being fully developed and ready for deployment, Stellantis isn't launching these features just yet. The company cites a limited market for Level 3 autonomous driving as the reason for holding back, that they'll introduce the technology once the market becomes more receptive.

Level 3 autonomy, often referred to as "conditional automation," presents unique challenges. The system can only be activated under certain driving conditions, requiring specific environmental and traffic criteria to be met. Also, drivers must remain alert and prepared to take control at a moment's notice, which can be a difficult standard to maintain. Regulatory authorities also face challenges in setting and enforcing standards for this level of autonomy, as it requires a delicate balance between safety and technological innovation.
Stellantis isn't alone in the pursuit of Level 3 autonomy. Mercedes-Benz was the first to launch an SAE Level 3 system in commercial vehicles in Europe and the U.S. in 2023. Other major automakers, including Honda, Ford, GM, Volvo, Sony, Kia and Xpeng, are also developing their own Level 3 systems, indicating a competitive and rapidly evolving landscape in the automotive industry.
When STLA AutoDrive eventually hits the market, it could significantly change the driving experience. Carlos Tavares Has One Regret During His Time as Dodge, Jeep, RAM CEO
About a week ago, the multinational automotive collective Stellantis closed a chapter in its tumultuous history as it named Antonio Filosa as its new CEO following an extensive search. The search, which considered candidates within and outside Stellantis, was initiated shortly after Carlos Tavares suddenly departed the company in December 2024, despite his promise not to renew his CEO contract after it was slated to end in early 2026. In a new interview with Bloomberg at his home near Lisbon, in his native Portugal, Tavares revealed that his departure from Stellantis was a personal choice rather than a result of conflict within the company. He said the decision stemmed from a thoughtful reflection sparked by a "very mature" conversation with chairman John Elkann, which greatly influenced his path. "I have nothing against anybody," Tavares told the financial publication. "Even those who made my life more difficult when I was the CEO of Stellantis. At one point in time, there is a crossroads, and somebody decides that it's time to part ways. That's fine." During his time as the former helm of Stellantis, Tavares oversaw some very controversial decisions that not everyone at the company was on board with, which included swapping metal parts for plastic ones on some of its more off-road-oriented vehicles. In a December 2024 CNBC report, several former and current Stellantis executives and other U.S.-based employees described Tavares as a selfish leader who would sacrifice the business to squeeze out every last cent. In his past tenure at Renault under the notorious Carlos Ghosn, he gained a reputation as a brash businessperson who was unafraid to shake up C-suites, but one Stellantis-affiliated individual characterized Tavares as jaded and said that the pressure to cut costs felt like having a pistol "to your head." In the same report, another Stellantis figurehead said that he was chiefly behind the decision to kill off the Hemi V8, noting that others in the company "wanted to keep [Hemi]," but were shot down due to Tavares' ambitious climate targets. Tavares admitted to Bloomberg he could have done "tons of things" differently. However, one regret that he brought up was failing to bring US dealers on board with his agenda, which focused heavily on cost-cutting and dropping key models. Despite calling it a regret, he still sees some silver lining in retrospect. "The dealers in the U.S. did not want to support what we were trying to do, which is my responsibility," he said. "Many things could have been done differently, but that doesn't matter. The company is profitable." In his interview with Bloomberg, Tavares called his replacement, Antonio Filosa, "a logical, credible choice," considering his experience in the Americas. However, he desperately has to repair the tattered relationship with its dealers that faltered under his tenure. In a January 2025 dealership sentiment survey from Kerrigan Advisors, 72% of dealers surveyed said that they had no trust in the Chrysler-Dodge-Jeep-Ram brands, which Stellantis owns. According to the survey, just 2% of dealers said they had high trust in Stellantis, and 26% said they had moderate trust. The level of distrust increased dramatically from the results recorded just one year prior. In 2023, just 39% of dealers said they had no trust in Stellantis, which reflects a 33% jump in distrust year over year. The survey was conducted around the same time the U.S. Stellantis National Dealer Council blamed then-CEO Carlos Tavares front and center for what it called the "rapid degradation" of brands like Dodge, Ram, and Jeep, in a letter dated September 10. "The market share of your brands has been slashed nearly in half, Stellantis' stock price is tumbling, plants are closing, layoffs are rampant, and key executives are fleeing the company," the dealers wrote. "Investor lawsuits, supplier lawsuits, strikes–the fallout is mounting. Your own distribution network, your dealer body, has been left in an anemic and diminished state." Following a prior back-and-forth between the dealer council and Stellantis, Stellantis US Dealer Council chairman Kevin Farrish noted in a December statement to AutoNews that Stellantis has been rebuilding trust. He said Stellantis Chairman John Elkann held a video call with Dealer Council leaders under Elkann's leadership the day after Tavares exited the company. This won't be the last time we hear from Carlos Tavares regarding Stellantis. To this day, Carlos Ghosn still adds his input on issues regarding Nissan. It is still difficult to tell which direction Stellantis will take regarding its products and company direction. However, we can hope that things will only improve from here. 'Missed My Bonus By One': Dodge Salesman Says May Was Terrible For Sales. Here's Why
So much for Memorial Day sales. Memorial Day weekend is usually one of the best times of the year to buy a car, as dealerships are eager to move older inventory to make room for fall's new models. But despite big banners and flashy promos, this year was a flop, according to a car salesperson who had an unexpectedly bad sales month. Are tariffs to blame, or is something else scaring off potential buyers? Dodge Salesman Vents About Bad Month In a trending video, Dodge salesman Dalton Stacey (@daltonstaceycars97), who's based in Oklahoma, shared what it's really like to sell cars in this market. Surprise, surprise, it's not pretty. Stacey explained that despite his employer giving the team an extra day to wrap up deals (instead of the cutoff being on Sunday, when customers might still be wavering on a decision), he made way fewer sales than he expected. 'I had so many people back out on me,' Stacey explained. 'It ain't even funny.' Because of all of the reneges, Stacey missed his bonus. What really hurts is that he was just one car shy of making the cutoff. 'Today sucked. May sucked. June better come correct,' Stacey said in the caption, clearly frustrated by the situation. Some people might hear this and think Stacey is making too big a deal about missing a bonus. But most people in the United States live paycheck to paycheck, and if you're relying on that extra income to cover your expenses, not getting it (especially by such a small margin) stings. Why Did People Back Out? Stacey doesn't explicitly state why his customers backed out, but we've got some context that'll help put things in perspective. Cars are getting more expensive—are tariffs to blame? Short answer: yes and no. In April, the average price of a new car jumped by a rare 2.5% to just under $49,000—a sharp rise for just a month's turnaround, Kelley Blue Book (KBB) reported . Even used car pricing increased. KBB described it as 'likely the first, softest wave of a storm.' Why? Tariff-related sticker shock is only a few months or just a few weeks away, depending on the brand. Right now, dealers are trying to get rid of their pre-tariff inventory. But when tariffs hit, vehicles could have up to a 25-percent markup baked in. (That 2.5 percent doesn't look so bad now.) The other factor affecting affordability is loans. Most people don't have the cash on hand to buy a car outright, so they rely on loans. But a good loan (meaning one with a low interest rate) is getting harder to qualify for. So even if you cop a deal, the loan may be what screws you over. No wonder so many people were sending Stacey the 'Actually, I need to think about it' texts. What to Do If You're Thinking About Buying a Car It depends on your situation, but here's a good place to start: If you're ready to buy soon: Shop around now while there's still pre-tariff inventory available, and take advantage of the slow market to negotiate, negotiate, negotiate. If you're using a car loan: Shop around for loan rates and consider getting pre-approved through a credit union or your bank. If you're on the fence: If your vehicle is running fine, then waiting things out could help you avoid peak tariff prices. But have a backup plan, like a budget, in case your car ends up needing a major repair. If you're selling or trading in: You're in a good position here since used inventory is tight. Get multiple quotes and don't forget online retailers like Carvana and CarMax, which may offer you a better price. Here's Why GM Designed a Gas Exhaust for EVs
The latest car news, reviews, and features. Every few months, it seems like somebody comes along and tries to put an exhaust system on an electric vehicle. Dodge's physical sound generator is perhaps the most novel attempt at something we'd consider a traditional 'exhaust,' but GM just patented something that is long on function and short on form. It's an emergency exhaust designed to head off a rare but catastrophic condition known as thermal runaway. Under normal circumstances, an EV only emits heat, rendering a traditional exhaust system pointless. Too much heat, however, is a potentially serious problem. Thermal runaway happens when, as a result of defect or damage, the battery begins to generate more heat than its cooling system can disperse, starting a chain-reaction effect that produces flammable gasses. It's the precursor to everybody's favorite electrified euphemism, the 'thermal event.' You know, fire. Salt water warning 😳 byu/Sir-Kyle-Of-Reddit inelectricvehicles GM's patent describes a system designed to help prevent thermal runaway from instigating a thermal event. To call it an 'exhaust' seems a bit generous; it's more like an elaborate wastegate. Essentially, it consists of a series of valves and/or caps that physically release the hot, combustible gases being generated within the malfunctioning battery cells and shunt them through a series of baffles that divert them away from adjacent cells and into a central exhaust chamber, where they're vented to the atmosphere, removing heat from the pack and eliminating potential ignition sources all in one go. While the greatest threat of fire would come from within the EV's battery, GM doesn't address the fact that it would expel combustible gases into what could be a chaotic, post-accident environment. Stellantis applied for a patent on a similar system earlier this year that incorporated a scrubber (akin to a catalytic converter) to remove unwanted components of the expelled mixture. Functionally, what GM has designed here has more in common with that emergency relief valve hanging off the side of your water heater than it does with a traditional internal-combustion exhaust system. But, it is technically an exhaust system. Ideally, a car equipped with such an 'exhaust' would never utilize it. But in the event of an accident or a defective/damaged battery, it could mean the difference between replacing a dead pack and rebuilding a burned-down garage—or home. Sounds like a winner. Got tips?
