Time Outa day ago

Brisbane 's pink and white banners are flying once again, signalling the return of the country's biggest international arts festival. Spanning 23 gloriously jam-packed days from September 5 to 27, Brisbane Festival 2025 will offer a smorgasbord of 1,000-plus performances, featuring more than 500 free events and 21 world premieres. Wowza!
There's heaps to get hyped about this year, starting with Riverfire, when the city's biggest firework spectacular explodes over the Brisbane River. We're also super excited for the return of First Nations-designed drone show Skylore, plus the transformation of three of Brisbane's most popular pedestrian bridges into a spectacular open-air art trail, featuring inflatable installations and colourful projections designed by internationally renowned Aussie artists Craig & Karl.
This year, Brisbane Festival has secured four Australian exclusives, including Gems – a world premiere dance trilogy by internationally renowned choreographer Benjamin Millepied and LA Dance Project, and 100 Guitars – an immersive sound experience featuring 100 electric guitarists from around the city. But the world premiere we're absolutely stocked for is Afterglow – a mesmerising journey through a dreamscape of fire sculpture, candlelit artworks and live performances in the City Botanic Gardens. Sounds lit, right?
Theatre lovers can look forward to a joyous Tina Turner tribute by drag icon Miss Ellaneous (Ben Graetz), the reawakening of Twelfth Night Theatre for sell-out cabaret Gatsby at the Green Light, a pop-fuelled reimagining of A Midsummer Night's Dream by Shake & Stir (titled The Lovers), and so much more. Seriously, you'll need a solid 30 minutes to scroll through the program.
More into music? Festivalgoers can catch Australia's biggest names at Night at the Parkland – an epic outdoor concert under the stars featuring the likes of Icehouse, Lime Cordiale, Xavier Rudd and Amy Shark. Other Aussie favourites to look out for on this year's program include Kate Miller-Heidke, Sarah Blasko and Winston Surfshirt, plus the return of Brisbane Serenades – a series of free outdoor concerts across the city. Is it just us or is everyone else buzzing with excitement overload?
You can explore the full Brisbane Festival program – did we mention more than a third of the events are free? – and get your tickets here.

Nick Kyrgios doesn't look like this anymore! Tennis champion shocks with dramatic new look following split from Costeen Hatzi

Nick Kyrgios has stunned fans with a dramatic new look as he recently rang in a milestone occasion. The tennis champion, who turned 30 in April, took to Instagram this week to debut his jaw-dropping new appearance – and followers could barely believe their eyes. Gone are the signature dark curls he's long been known for, replaced by a completely shaved head that left the star athlete looking almost unrecognisable. In a short clip, the Aussie star confidently showed off the buzzcut from multiple angles, locking eyes with the camera as he embraced the change. Kyrgios revealed the drastic transformation was in honour of a milestone birthday, telling fans: '30 is unreal. Not even in my prime yet. And shaved head is UNREAL.' From A-list scandals and red carpet mishaps to exclusive pictures and viral moments, subscribe to the DailyMail's new showbiz newsletter to stay in the loop. Kyrgios appears to be embracing change after he confirmed his split from Costeen Hatzi last month. Following their split, Kyrgios' ex-girlfriend Hatzi, 26, delivered a parting message to her tennis star ex. Rumours of the breakup had been circulating for months, with Kyrgios appearing to unfollow the social media star on Instagram. The tennis star sparked rumours they had secretly split after he removed her initials from his Instagram bio. Meanwhile, Hatzi shared multiple cryptic posts, uploading a TikTok in which she appeared to mouth the words: 'Who the f*** did I marry? So at this point in time, I have filed for divorce'. She then confirmed the pair ended things on good terms, wishing the best for her ex-partner. 'I'm loving my work and doing content every day,' she told The Herald Sun. 'We haven't spoken, relationships come to an end. I believe it's for the best. 'I hope he finds peace and happiness within himself. 'I definitely entered the relationship with pure intentions. I loved him, thought we had a great connection.' The pair began dating back in 2021. They appeared head over heels for each other following their first meeting - which took place after he messaged Hatzi on social media about a mirror she was selling. He went to her home to pick up the mirror but as she previously said: 'It was love at first sight.' The pair became official in January, 2022 and moved in together, with Hatzi regularly seen following her beau around the world as he competed on the ATP Tour. After four years together, The Herald Sun revealed they split after a tournament in March, with Hatzi joking: 'Maybe I'll steer away from athletes.'

A striking new 5.5-metre sculpture celebrating First Nations women is coming to Sydney's harbourside

The Sydney landscape is dotted with some pretty iconic public art, like that crushed car in the middle of a roundabout in Walsh Bay, or that six-metre-tall marble fishing hook overlooking the sculptural sails of the Sydney Opera House. But when it comes to our city's statues and the historical figures they commemorate, the spread is somewhat embarrassingly skewed to colonial and patriarchal figures. However, an ambitious new permanent public artwork coming to Circular Quay is set to shake up the status quo. Titled 'Badjgama Ngunda Whuliwulawala (Black Women Rising)', the 5.5-metre-high cast bronze sculpture is the creation of Dharawal and Yuin artist Alison Page, developed in consultation with the Sydney Coastal Aboriginal Women's Group and the Gujaga Foundation. The sculpture depicts an Aboriginal woman rising powerfully from a body of water. Part woman and part whale, the figure represents the deep connection Aboriginal people have to Country and serves as an invitation for all women and all people to connect with her strength and resilience. Speaking on the artwork, the artist said: ''Badjgama Ngunda Whuliwulawala (Black Women Rising)' emerges from the water below the city, a place of spiritual potency for Dharawal women. She is the mixing of the salt water and the fresh water, her energy and essence lives within the Aboriginal women of Sydney today. She is every black woman, every mother, daughter, sister, aunty. She is Country.' Commissioned by Lendlease, the work will be produced by UAP foundry in Brisbane and is set to be unveiled outside of the Waldorf Astoria Sydney hotel development at Circular Quay in early 2027. The news of Circular Quay's new sculpture comes after the recent announcement of another major public art project paying tribute to Indigenous history, with the redeveloped Sydney Fish Market also unveiling a sculpture series that will honour Blackwattle Bay's First Nations and maritime histories.

The 'must-have' $18 item from Kmart shoppers can't get enough of: ''OMG I'm running to grab these'

With a recently big dip in temperatures nationwide, a cosy new release from Kmart is sending shoppers into a frenzy. Fans have been rushing in-store and online to snap up the retailer's latest winter must-have in the form of a fleecy pyjama set that feels 'super soft' according to the rave online reviews. Retailing for just $18 each, the Plush Fleece Top and Plush Fleece Pants are being hailed for their buttery-soft texture and elevated colourways. It's loungewear that feels like a warm hug without the high-end price tag. And bonus for the taller girls (and guys), these are quite long in the leg according to multiple online comments. 'So cosy and soft. True to size. They are quite long in length though,' one reviewer said online. The range comes in two wearable shades, a lilac and soft cream. Made from ultra-soft fleece material, the long-sleeved top features a relaxed, slightly oversized fit with dropped shoulders and a cosy crew neckline, while the matching pants have an elasticated waistband and drawstring tie for maximum comfort. As usual, Kmart has included these in their inclusive size range, with both pieces available in sizes 6 through to 22, ensuring everybody can indulge in a little winter luxury. Fashion-obsessed Aussie mum Zoe Nation, posted a video of herself wearing the popular set. 'Run to Kmart,' she said. Her video has been viewed more than 300,000 times - with one shopper confirming: 'Have them! And I can confirm so good.' 'Comfortable and so cute I bought purple and white,' another commented. 'Omg I need,' one shared. 'Running to grab these omg,' another added. Another item that has Kmart fans tripping over themselves is a newly released pair of high waisted white jeans - and they might even have Posh Spice herself doing a double take. The retail giant's $30 Wide Leg Pocket Jeans have a striking resemblance to Victoria Beckham's cult-favourite (and extremely pricey) $800 Alina Wide Leg Jeans. Right down to the tailored silhouette, oversized patch front pockets, flared bell-bottoms, and flattering high-waisted cut, this 'dupe' is most definitely note-worthy. The Kmart jeans - described as the 'perfect fit' - were originally available in shades Black, Light Wash Blue, Mid Wash Blue, but have now newly launched in a neutral shade called 'Ecru Denim', mimicking Posh's popular style almost exactly. With the temperatures at an all-time low across the country, it's no wonder Kmart have listened to the growing demand this winter with a pair of pants that flatter everyone. Melbourne mum Zeljka Abaza, who regularly shares affordable fashion finds with her 28,000 Instagram followers, has posted a video of herself styling the 'it' jeans in the newly released Ecru Denim colour. 'The must have jeans', she captioned the video, showing how she effortlessly paired the bargain pair with a crisp blue shirt tied up to the neck, and cream boots for a chic, professional look. The jeans, like Posh's, are crafted from 100 per cent durable cotton perfect for a structured and more tailored look. The resemblance is hard to deny, with Kmart's version offering a near-identical look for less than four per cent of the price. With their structured wide-leg cut, high-rise waist, and oversized patch pockets, they tick every box for comfort, style, and versatility as well as being flattering and forgiving for most body types. The addition of the Ecru shade – a creamy, soft neutral tone – couldn't have come at a better time. As Australians embrace pared-back tones and 'quiet luxury' dressing this winter, this shade is the perfect cool-weather alternative to stark white denim. Dozens of reviews on Kmart's website echo the same sentiment: Kmart has just dropped a designer dupe so good, even Posh Spice herself might do a double take (pictured wearing her designer wide leg jeans in the butter colour) 'Great style, fit, colour. My favourite jeans,' one raved. 'These are outstanding cut and fit, good quality 100 per cent cotton rigid denim and they are amazing,' another wrote. 'The front pockets are great because they don't add bulk to wider hips… I'm 170cm and these are long,' another noted on the popular style. 'They look so high end,' one suggested. While another added: 'It can be hard to find the perfect white pair of jeans and these look amazing.' With the video of Zeljka's styling racking up tens of thousands of views, it's no wonder stock is moving fast - with some revealing they have been struggling to get their hands on the jeans. 'Out of stock everywhere… all colours,' one said. If you're looking to elevate your winter wardrobe without blowing the budget, you might want to add these jeans to your cart before they sell out.
