Apple is gearing up for a major shake-up with its iPhone 17 lineup, set to be unveiled this September. Fans are expecting the usual four-model release, but leaks suggest that a new model is on the way- a very thin version, which could likely be called the iPhone 17 Air This year's iPhone 17 series is shaping up to be one of the most exciting yet. Important specifications and pricing information for the upcoming iPhones have started to appear online as September draws near. The iPhone 17 Slim or iPhone 17 Air will be a brand-new model that will take the place of the Plus version. Early leaks say that this new phone will be much thinner, only 5.5mm thick, which is a big change from the bulkier designs of the past few years. The iPhone 16 Plus model is expected to be replaced by the iPhone 17 Air. As the name implies, it will have an extremely thin design, measuring only 5.5 mm in thickness. Apple may eliminate the physical SIM slot due to design constraints.A 6.55-inch screen is anticipated, and Apple is rumored to be using a new type of high-energy-density battery cell, which can store more power and take up less space than the traditional phone batteries found in the current generation of high-end phones, as per a report by Deccan Herald.Since the significant redesign of the iPhone 11 Pro in 2019, the camera design of iPhone Pro models has essentially stayed the same.According to the most recent images of leaked iPhone 17 models, the camera module will have a completely new and modern design. They will take up the entire top slot on the back while maintaining the iPhone's distinctiveness. In comparison to the iPhone 16 Plus, even the iPhone 17 Air will have a different camera design. It will have a long, horizontally aligned capsule with an LED flash on one side and a single primary camera sensor on the other. On the other hand, like the iPhone 16, the standard iPhone 17 model will feature a vertically aligned module with dual-camera sensors and an LED flash. All four iPhone 17 models from Apple will have OLED screens with Pro Motion technology. A refresh rate of 120 Hz will also be supported by them. They will also include silicon from the A19 series. While the iPhone 17 Pro and Pro Max will have more cores in the A19 Pro silicon, the standard iPhone 17 and 17 Air may have watered-down A19 chipsets.Apple is introducing a slimmer, redesigned look, particularly on the new iPhone 17 Air model. The iPhone 17 series is expected to be released globally in the second week of September.

Qualcomm's premium smartphone chip reliance, Apple modem loss overshadow upbeat forecast
By Stephen Nellis and Akash Sriram Qualcomm 's reliance on high-end smartphone chip sales and the looming loss of Apple as a modem customer overshadowed the company's optimistic quarterly forecast on Wednesday, driving shares down more than 6%. The San Diego-based company is the world's largest supplier of modem chips that enable smartphones to connect to wireless data networks. Qualcomm reported its chip segment revenue from non-Apple customers has risen more than 15% so far this fiscal year. Its chip segment sales increase, excluding Apple, "is largely driven by ASP (average selling price) uplift from flagship Android launches rather than broad-based volume recovery," said William McGonigle, analyst at Third Bridge. Taiwan's MediaTek has surpassed Qualcomm this year to become the global leader in smartphone chipset market share, driven by its dominance in affordable and mid-range segments and strong growth in major markets like India, according to Counterpoint Research . Qualcomm reiterated its warning that Apple's shift to its own modem chips in future devices will hit its chip segment revenue. The iPhone 16e, launched earlier this year, was the first Apple smartphone to house a modem developed in-house. Qualcomm forecast September quarter revenue of $10.3 billion to $11.1 billion, compared with analysts' estimates of $10.64 billion, according to LSEG data. The company has not seen signs of customers ordering chips ahead of normal seasonal schedules to try to get ahead of possible tariffs, Chief Financial Officer Akash Palkhiwala told Reuters in an interview. U.S. President Donald Trump's tariff policies have so far provided exemptions for smartphones and semiconductor chips from these levies. But Trump has issued warnings about potential sector-specific tariffs targeting the industry, saying this month that he would "soon announce tariffs on semiconductors." The tariff situation remains highly fluid and complex, with existing Chinese electronics tariffs still in effect despite the exemptions granted for certain categories. Global smartphone shipments climbed 1% in the second quarter, according to research firm IDC, as Apple, a key Qualcomm customer, accelerated shipments to avoid potential tariff impacts. Qualcomm CEO Cristiano Amon said he expects the company's business to supply chips to augmented-reality glasses such as Meta Ray-Bans to expand. "We have all the designs that matter right now - the number of designs like the Meta glasses is now up to 19, and that continues to accelerate," Amon told Reuters. Qualcomm forecast fiscal fourth-quarter chip segment sales at a midpoint of $9.3 billion, compared with analyst estimates of $9.19 billion, according to Visible Alpha data. The chipmaker reported sales of $10.37 billion for its third quarter ended June 29, beating estimates of $10.35 billion. The company's third-quarter adjusted profit of $2.77 per share topped Wall Street estimates by 6 cents. Qualcomm expects adjusted profit in the fiscal fourth quarter of about $2.85 per share, above estimates of $2.83 per share.

Apple earnings under pressure from tariffs, slow AI roll-out
Long seen as the safest Big Tech bet, Apple is heading into Thursday's earnings with its business facing pressure from US tariffs, tough competition in China and a high-stakes artificial intelligence race it has been late to enter. Wall Street expects the company to post a 4.2% rise in revenue for the April-June quarter to $89.34 billion. Still, the focus will be on how Apple plans to adjust to a landscape that has turned its global supply chain, long a strength, into a potential liability. US President Donald Trump has targeted the consumer electronics giant for its reliance on overseas manufacturing, threatening 25% tariffs on foreign-made iPhones. To limit the damage, Apple shifted production of US-bound iPhones to India, further drawing Trump's ire. The total volume of Indian-made smartphones jumped 240% in the second quarter, largely driven by Apple's supply chain shift, according to research firm Canalys. Analysts and investors are now expecting the strategy to help Apple limit the hit from tariffs to well below $900 million it had estimated in May. IPhones are "a very high-profile product that both the Chinese and the US governments understand they have a lever over," DA Davidson analyst Gil Luria said. "So until the tariff rates get settled, Apple is very much at risk of being impacted by the current trade dispute." Analysts also said Apple, like many other firms, potentially overestimated tariff costs to leave room for an earnings beat. "Most companies we follow have made conservative assumptions by overestimating tariff costs as the goal of management is generally to beat its own guidance," said Jamie Meyers, senior analyst at Apple shareholder Laffer Tengler Investments. Sales of iPhones are expected to have risen 2.2% in Apple's fiscal third quarter, according to data compiled by LSEG, helped by an improvement in demand in China, Apple's third-largest market. In the fiscal second quarter, this increased 1.9%. Counterpoint Research data shows iPhone sales in the world's largest smartphone market jumped 8% in the quarter, fueled by steep discounts during the 618 shopping festival, government-backed trade-in subsidies and targeted iPhone 16 Pro promotions. Sales of Apple's other devices are expected to have slowed in the April-June period, while revenue from services - its fastest-growing segment in recent years - is likely to rise to 10.7%. In the January-March period, services revenue grew 11.6%. Doubts still remain over Apple's prospects in China, where domestic companies including Honor are rolling out smartphones packed with AI features such as generative AI photo editors. Apple's cautious approach to AI has fueled concerns it is sitting out what could be the industry's biggest growth wave in decades. The company was slow to roll out its Apple Intelligence suite, including a ChatGPT integration, while a long-awaited AI upgrade to Siri has been delayed until next year.
