GOLD CANYON, Ariz. - No one was hurt when a fire broke out Tuesday night in a building on the Arizona Renaissance Festival Fairgrounds in the far east Valley.
What we know
Firefighters responded to the fairgrounds just before 9:45 p.m. on March 11 and found heavy smoke coming from a large steel commercial building.
"The fire was upgraded to a first alarm, prompting additional crews from Mesa and Gilbert fire departments to respond," Superstition Fire and Medical District spokesperson Sophie Boukatch said. "Firefighters faced intense heat and flames as they worked to contain the blaze."
Crews remained on the scene Wednesday morning to extinguish hot spots.
Officials say the fire will not impact operations at the Renaissance Festival, which remains open on weekends through the end of the month.

Cat rescued from drain pipe gets adopted by firefighter rescuer in East Valley
A stray cat rescued from an East Valley pipe on Wednesday has been adopted by one of the firefighters who saved it. According to a Facebook post by the Superstition Fire and Medical District, crews responded to reports of a cat trapped four feet inside a drain pipe in Apache Junction. Responding to the cat-tastrophe, firefighters used a rescue strap to create a loop around the cat and pull it to safety. One of the rescuers, Firefighter Hammer, "felt a special calling and decided to adopt the stray cat," read the post. A photo shared by the fire department shows the cat resting in the gloved hand of firefighter Hammer. The owner of the residence in which the drain pipe was located on, volunteered to keep the cat overnight until Hammer got off his shift the next morning. "While we're not always available to personally help out our animal rescues, we're very happy that this kitten went to a loving home, and right in time for Christmas," read the post.
