Downtown Las Vegas bar owner hunts for new venue before closure

Yahoo15-05-2025

LAS VEGAS (KLAS) – After nearly 20 years, the owner of a well-known downtown Las Vegas bar is searching for a new location.
Hogs & Heifers Saloon Owner Michelle Dell said the bar's lease will not be renewed, and it may need to close on July 6 while it searches for its next location.
The bar, popular among bikers and first responders, came to Las Vegas from New York City nearly 20 years ago. Dell told 8 News Now their arrival was part of former City of Las Vegas Mayor Oscar Goodman's efforts to revive downtown.
Dell said she was not surprised by the lack of renewal.
'We knew our lease was coming up due, but, for a number of reasons, it took years to recover from COVID, it took years to regain this type of stability that gives you the opportunity to pull the loan that you need to buy the property to, be in charge of our own destiny,' she said.
Dell said she has identified a site nearby to relocate and build a temporary bar. Currently, they either need time or money to acquire it.
'Both would be ideal because then we could build a proper structure and not a temporary structure that we then have to rebuild in order to get up and running in three months,' Dell said. 'It would certainly be a temporary structure. We're not buying a building, we would be buying a piece of property.'
Dell claimed that the owners of the Downtown Grand, where they are located, are selling the property to Penkse Media Corporation, who are the owners of Rolling Stone and the Life is Beautiful music festival. Both Penske and the Downtown Grand's ownership told 8 News Now they have no comment. Dell added that the alleged new owners have no interest in keeping her bar on the property.
'We really just want an opportunity to talk to Penske,' she said. 'We have had no contact with them, and we're not even sure they know who we are really. Hogs & Heifers brings 175 to 200,000 people through our doors every single year. We know this because we wristband people as they come through our doors.'
Dell has 45 employees and plans to support them during the transition. The team is considering ways to raise money for the new location, including possibly selling some of the bar's memorabilia.
'I rolled the dice on Las Vegas 20 years ago when nobody would, and I would like Las Vegas to roll the dice on me for one more year while I find a new home,' she said.

These CEOs plan to invest billions in 'Trump accounts,' government savings plans for newborns

Several CEOs plan to invest in Trump's investment accounts for babies, the White House said. The CEOs of Uber, Goldman Sachs, and Dell appeared at the White House to promote "Trump Accounts." Dell said it would match the government's $1,000 contributions for children of its employees. The White House is ready to usher in a new generation of boss babies — and it's enlisting the help of some of America's most prominent executives. A small crowd of CEOs joined President Donald Trump at the White House for a roundtable on Monday to promote his plan to deposit $1,000 in investment accounts for newborn babies. The program is part of the president's signature — and controversial — spending bill, which has passed the House but faces headwinds in the Senate after getting publicly bashed by Elon Musk. The CEOs who attended the roundtable included Dell Technologies CEO Michael Dell, Uber CEO Dara Khosrowshahi, and Goldman Sachs CEO David Solomon. A White House official confirmed to Business Insider ahead of the event that under the program, the executives would announce plans to invest billions of dollars worth of collective investments into Trump Accounts for their employees' future children. With the exception of Dell, it was not immediately clear how much each company plans to invest if the initiative becomes law, and the companies did not specify when contacted by BI. Dell said in a statement provided to BI that the company would match the government's $1,000 investment for the children of its employees. "The creation of investment accounts for every child will compound into substantial nest eggs providing support for education, home ownership, and starting families," the CEO said. Other corporate leaders who attended the event on Monday afternoon included Robinhood CEO Vladimir Tenev, Salesforce cofounder Parker Harris, Altimeter Capital CEO Brad Gerstner, Arm Holdings CEO Rene Haas, and ServiceNow CEO William McDermott. "This is a pro-family initiative that will help millions of Americans harness the strength of our economy to lift up the next generation, and they'll really be getting a big jump on life," Trump said during his prepared remarks at the start of the roundtable. Trump Accounts would be available to every American citizen born from January 1, 2025, and December 31, 2028, according to the bill. Under the program, if the bill in its current form passes and is signed into law, the federal government would invest $1,000 into an index fund that tracks the stock market. The child's guardians will control the account. Guardians could deposit up to $5,000 a year into the account, which the child could access once they're 18. In a statement to BI, White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt said that passing the president's spending bill, called the "One Big Beautiful Bill," and the associated Trump Accounts "will put the lives of young Americans on the right financial path!" BI reached out to the companies of the CEOs who attended the roundtable. In their remarks at the event and statements provided to BI, the CEOs emphasized that the investment accounts would set the next generation up for success by giving them a financial head-start. "Our economy's future vitality is dependent on young people understanding the power of investing for the long term," Solomon, CEO of Goldman Sachs, said during the roundtable. "The American stock market is among the greatest wealth creation engines of our time," Tenev, the Robinhood CEO, said in a statement. "Speaking personally, as an immigrant to this country, I've seen firsthand the vast opportunities afforded by our financial system." A representative for ServiceNow said in a statement: "This is more than policy — it's about unlocking a future where more Americans can own, build, and thrive." Monday afternoon's investments are another example of the Trump administration's close ties to the private sector. The administration has also secured hundreds of millions of dollars in pro bono work from major law firms for causes the administration supports. Read the original article on Business Insider

High-speed train project seeks time extensions on permits for Las Vegas station

LAS VEGAS (KLAS) — Brightline West is requesting a third extension on permits for its Las Vegas train station, but officials are calling it a formality. 'Construction is on time,' Antonio Castelan, director of public affairs for the L.A.-to-Las Vegas high-speed train project, told 8 News Now on Monday. A request on the June 11 agenda of the Enterprise Town Board seeks a number of extensions for permits, including retail sales, restaurants and outdoor dining for the project. The request also seeks waivers for the elimination of a buffer along Interstate 15 and an airspace encroachment. Renderings of the station have been released previously, but a design review is also part of the request on Tuesday's agenda to cover the passenger terminal and landscaping at the 110.7-acre site along the west side of Las Vegas Boulevard South, just north of Blue Diamond Road. The requests are heard first by the town board. If approved, they would advance to the Clark County Commission for consideration. That would be a zoning hearing on July 2, county officials said. 'This is a formality on permitting,' Castelan said. In early February, officials with the Nevada Department of Transportation said they expected construction on the train to begin within two months. Frequent reports sent to media outlets on engineering work along the I-15 median — where tracks for the high-speed electric train will go in — stopped in mid-January, and questions about Trump administration support for the project followed. Last week, federal transportation authorities threatened to pull funding for a high-speed rail project between L.A. and San Francisco, but Brightline West has not been targeted. In fact, Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy complimented Brightline in February as 'on budget, on time.' Recent reports have indicated that officials no longer expect to begin service by the time the 2028 Olympics in Los Angeles begin. 8 News Now reached out to Clark County Commissioner Michael Naft, but the county said he wouldn't comment until the matter comes before the commission. The station site is in his district. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved. This material may not be published, broadcast, rewritten, or redistributed.

Trump, CEOs unveil 'Invest America' savings accounts for newborns

June 9 (UPI) -- President Donald Trump on Monday unveiled plans for the U.S. government and companies to collectively invest money in savings accounts for employees' children as part of the $1.45 trillion discretionary spending bill. The "Invest America" roundtable in the State Dining Room at White House included CEOs from several companies, as well as U.S. House Speaker Mike Johnson and other House members. The budget bill passed narrowly by the U.S. House last month and has moved to the Senate. Republicans want the bill signed by Trump before the Fourth of July. The federal savings program has been referred to "Trump accounts," "Money Accounts for Growth and Advancement" and "MAGA Accounts." The pilot program would seed index fund accounts with $1,000 in Treasury Department funds for U.S. citizens born between Jan. 1, 2025, and Dec. 31, 2028. Companies, employees, other family members and friends also can make post-tax contributions up to $5,000 annually. The CEOs participating were Michael Dell of Dell Technologies, Brad Gerstner of Altimeter Capital, Rene Haas of Arm Holdings, Parker Harris of Slack and Salesforce, William McDermott of ServiceNow, Dara Khosrowshahi of Uber, David Solomon of Goldman Sachs, Vladimir Tenev of Robinhood. "They really are the greatest business minds we have today," Trump said. "These men and women lead large, successful companies. And they are committed to contributing millions of dollars to the Trump account. It's really to be something incredible for children and their employees." He singled out Dell, who months ago presented the idea to the president. He started his company from a garage in 1984 in Austin, Texas, and it has grown into a company worth $78 billion. Dell said his company will match dollar for dollar the $1,000 from the government and his foundation will make a "significant gift." The computer CEO called it a "simple yet powerful way to transform lives. ... This is an investment in our people, their families, our communities and America's future." Trump said: "Extensive research shows children with savings accounts are more likely to graduate high school and college, buy a home, start a business and are less likely to be incarcerated." The accounts' performance will be based on a U.S. stock market's index fund. The accounts would be controlled by children's guardians until they turn 18. The account beneficiary will be able to withdraw up to 50% of their balance beginning at age 18 with full access at 25 for qualified purposes and no restrictions at 30. A $1,000 investment in the Standard and Poor 500 exchange-traded fund trust made 18 years ago would be worth $5,590 today, according to FactSet data. That same investment 31 years ago would be worth $22,770. The pilot program is similar to other savings account options, including 529 college savings plans, which also have contribution limits. Some already offer a type of "baby bonds" program for parents. They are also like 401 (k) accounts offered by businesses with tax savings and the power of compound interest over several years. "Trump accounts take it from the same principle and they apply it from the very beginning of Americans' lives," Johnson said. "It is a pretty simple concept." The savings account proposal is one small aspect of the budget legislation. "The passage of the One Big Beautiful Bill will literally change the lives of working, middle class families across America by delivering the largest tax cuts in history, increasing the child tax credit, and by creating this incredible new 'Trump Account' program, which will put the lives of young Americans on the right financial path!" White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt told CNBC in a statement. The legislation includes an extension of expiring tax cuts from 2015 and money for immigration. Some Republicans, as well as Elon Musk, who ran the Department of Government Efficiency, don't want to add the debt of $26.2 trillion. The Congressional Budget Office projects it will increase federal deficits by about $2.4 trillion over a decade. "I didn't go out to craft a piece of legislation to please the richest man in the world," Johnson, R-La., said in response to Musk's criticisms in an interview with ABC News on Sunday. "What we're trying to do is help hardworking families who are trying to make ends meet."
