Committee seeks deputation of physical education teachers to rural schools twice a week
Mangaluru: A lot of govt schools in the district have no physical education (PE) teachers, and as a result, students fail to get the necessary training for sports events. To solve this issue, the SDMC coordination committee has requested the department of school education and literacy to depute physical education teachers from available schools to those without them for two days a week to train rural children for sports events. Physical education teachers are allocated in higher primary schools based on the number of admissions. However, teachers were not appointed in the past decade, and there is an acute shortage. As a result, students from DK and other districts are missing out on physical education, said Mohiuddin Kutty, president of the committee. They submitted a memorandum to the govt on Tuesday. According to a memorandum, due to the lack of physical education teachers in most rural schools in the state, many talented children are unable to receive training and achieve their potential. Therefore, it is essential to mandatorily assign cluster-level physical education teachers to schools without such teachers for at least two days a week. Further, as per the RTE Act, SMDCs can recruit physical education teachers based on voluntary service or a fixed honorarium and utilise their services as needed. When teachers are selected by the SMDC, they should be given an opportunity to participate in, supervise, and train for zonal, taluk, and district-level sports events. This will provide opportunities for underprivileged and poor children in rural areas to participate in sports, it said. Stay updated with the latest local news from your city on Times of India (TOI).
