Rapid Kuantan to continue bus services until new operator appointed
Pahang Public Works, Transport and Health Committee chairman Datuk Ir. Razali Kassim assured that Rapid Kuantan would continue providing services until a new concessionaire takes over.
"There are no new developments regarding the Rapid stage buses (to cease operations). So, they will continue offering services as usual," he told the New Straits Times when met at the Gambang toll plaza yesterday.
Rapid Kuantan did not submit a bid for the Stage Bus Service Transformation 2.0 (SBST 2.0) programme in Kuantan, citing rising operational costs. Their services were initially expected to end last month.
Last year, Razali had said, based on information from the Land Public Transport Agency, that a new concessionaire was expected to begin stage bus operations in Kuantan starting May this year.
Earlier, Razali, accompanied by Pahang Road Transport Department director Syed Ahmad Khairulanwar Alyahya Syed Abdul Rahman, distributed goodies to motorists at the toll plaza as part of the Aidiladha Road Safety Advocacy Programme.

Perlis floods: RM780K compensation paid to padi farmers
KANGAR: More than 2,600 hectares of paddy fields in Perlis were damaged by floods between September and December last year, with compensation amounting to RM780,146.28, the Perlis State Legislative Assembly was told today. State Agriculture, Plantations and Consumer Affairs Committee chairman Razali Saad said a total of 2,639.53 hectares were affected, with all impacted farmers receiving full payments through the Padi Crop Disaster Fund Scheme (TBTP). He said the Agriculture and Food Security Ministry has since strengthened the compensation mechanism through the Padi Crop Takaful Scheme (STTP), managed by Agro Captive Takaful Ltd (ACTL), a subsidiary of Agrobank. 'A total of 860 eligible farmers have been identified under the scheme, particularly those affected by floods in November and December 2024. To qualify, they must be registered under the Federal Government Padi Fertiliser Assistance Scheme (SBPKP),' he said. Razali was responding to a question from Wan Zikri Afthar Ishak (PN–Tambun Tulang) regarding the status of affected farmers and the compensation measures. Under the STTP, eligible farmers may receive RM1,500 per hectare for padi crops aged below 50 Days After Sowing (HLT). Razali said the compensation is currently undergoing verification and approval by Agrobank, and will be credited directly into recipients' accounts upon clearance. - Bernama

Johor, Singapore propose cross-border e-hailing service for commuters
KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 3 — Johor and Singapore have proposed introducing cross-border e-hailing services as an alternative mode of transport for commuters. Johor Menteri Besar Datuk Onn Hafiz Ghazi said the proposal was among the matters discussed during his meeting with Singapore's Acting Transport Minister Jeffrey Siow on Friday. 'This service not only offers more flexible, on-demand mobility options for users but also has the potential to ease congestion on major routes and create income opportunities for local drivers,' he said in a statement yesterday. 'It could also serve as a catalyst for a more user-friendly, safe and competitive transport system, while strengthening integration between both countries' public transport networks.' Onn Hafiz said discussions also touched on the progress of the Rapid Transit System (RTS) Link project, which is scheduled to begin operations in January 2027. 'This includes the physical development of the project, coordination of operating schedules, determination of fare structures, and integration of public transport systems between Johor and Singapore. 'There were also proposals to align operating hours and increase the number of cross-border buses, with services starting earlier than the current 5am schedule, to ease congestion and ensure smoother traffic flow at the Johor Causeway and immigration complexes,' he said.

Electric bus tender closed, vendor being appointed, says Loke
KUALA LUMPUR: Electric buses are expected to debut next year under the Rapid service, says Transport Minister Anthony Loke. "The tender process has ended and we are in the process of appointing the vendor. 'The delivery of the buses will take around 12 months,' he told reporters after an unveiling ceremony for RapidKL and RapidPenang's new diesel-powered buses here on Monday (July 14). Loke said that among the requirements for the electric bus tender was that the vehicles must be assembled in the country, or completely knocked down (CKD). He added that even though the manufacturers are from overseas, the tender requirement is for them to have a local partner. 'The tender will be awarded to companies that have Malaysian partners, or that are incorporated here,' he added. The diesel buses that arrived today would also be the last batch bought by Rapid services operator Prasarana, he said in his speech earlier. He added that this was to make way for the more environmentally friendly electric buses. 'This is in line with the government's commitments to transition to more sustainable, environmentally friendly and low-carbon public transport systems,' he said. Prasarana will receive 310 diesel-powered buses manufactured by Chinese company Higer. Loke said the vehicle components are made in China but the buses were assembled in Johor. He said this was part of the country's support for technology transfer and the local automotive industry's development.
