Environment Canada's forecast calls for a high of 27 C today, with the humidex making it feels like 30. Ottawa will see a high of 28 C on Friday and Saturday. Ottawa has seen a stretch of below seasonal temperatures this week, with highs ranging from 22 to 24 C. The normal temperatures for this time of year are a high of 24 C and a low of 14 C. Farm shed near Wheatley heavily damaged by 130 km/h downburst, say investigators
New Storm touched down near Wheatley around 4 a.m. Sunday Tornado researchers say a downburst touched down in the Wheatley-area during an early morning storm this past Sunday. It happened around 4 a.m., Aug. 17, in farm fields near the small community of Coastworth. The damage area was estimated to be around 500 metres long and up to 300 metres wide — including an agricultural drive shed being destroyed. There was also damage to crops, and items like a trampoline were blown around, according to investigators with the Northern Tornadoes Project (NTP). They say the storm carried wind speeds as high as 130 km/h. "Parts of the building's roof were thrown well downwind, a heavy object was rolled a long distance across the road and into a field , and there were numerous narrow patches in the corn field where the corn stalks were laying flat," the report stated. While the rotating winds of a tornado converge at the surface then rise up into a storm, often resulting in narrow paths of chaotic damage, downburst winds descend and diverge beneath the storm and result in outward burst patterns of damage or wide areas with damage mostly from the same direction, researchers at Western University previously told CBC News. The damage was rated at the upper end of an EF0 twister. No injuries were reported from the incident.
