T Accelerates Fiber Network Expansion: Will it Boost Competitive Edge?

Globe and Mail2 days ago

AT&T, Inc. T recently announced that its fiber broadband network has reached 30 million consumer and business locations across the United States. The major milestone was realized ahead of schedule. This is a major step toward achieving its long-term goal of 60 million fiber locations by 2030. AT&T's industry-leading fiber capabilities and steady investment in fiber infrastructure have become key enablers of economic growth and innovation in several sectors, including healthcare and education. During 2020-2024, the company has invested $145 billion in wireline and wireless network expansion.
Since 2020, AT&T has aggressively expanded its fiber locations and added 5.7 million fiber customers. To expand its fiber footprint, the company has taken a multi-dimensional approach, which includes growing and improving its in-region fiber network, public-private partnerships, commercial open access agreements and strategic acquisitions. The acquisition of Lumen's fiber business will add 1 million fiber customers and 4 million fiber locations across 11 U.S. states.
Its customer-oriented approach is a major advantage. It's the first and only carrier in the industry to introduce a customer guarantee for both wireless and fiber networks. AT&T Guarantee offers proactive bill credits to customers in case of fiber downtime lasting 20 minutes or more and wireless downtime lasting 60 minutes or more. Multi-gigabit speed, built-in security, optimal in-home coverage and availability of integrated fiber and 5G connectivity plans are enhancing customer experience.
With its strong network architecture expertise, size and scale, cost-effective growth path and an agile go-to-market approach, the company is expected to gain a substantial customer base in the upcoming years. In the first quarter of 2025, AT&T added 261,000 fiber customers. Per our estimate, fiber net adds are expected to reach 1,048,000 by the end of 2025, indicating 2.4% year-over-year growth.
How Are Competitors Faring?
AT&T faces competition from Verizon Communications, Inc. VZ and Charter Communications CHTR in the fiber broadband space. Verizon Fios has a strong presence in the Northeast U.S. states, offering high-speed Internet and TV services. In the first quarter, the company recorded 41,000 Fios Internet net additions as high demand for reliable fiber optic broadband was spurred by higher video consumption. Through the acquisition of Frontier Communications, Verizon is set to gain access to Frontier's 2.2 million fiber subscribers across 25 states. This will significantly expand Verizon's fiber footprint.
Charter Communications has a strong nationwide presence. The company has undertaken a multi-year rural construction initiative, investing $7 billion in this program. The program intends to add an additional 100,000+ miles of fiber-optic network infrastructure and provide symmetrical, multi-gigabit speed across 1.7 million new locations. Such initiatives will significantly bolster Charter's competitive edge.
T's Price Performance, Valuation and Estimates
AT&T has gained 61.4% over the past year compared with the Wireless National industry's growth of 31.8%.

Why Oklo Stock Slumped Today

One of the hotter energy stocks of recent times cooled down on Friday. This is next-generation nuclear company Oklo (NYSE: OKLO), which provided details of a capital-raising effort it originally announced late Wednesday afternoon. Investors weren't all that happy with this, and on Friday, they traded the stock down to leave it with a more than 1% loss in value. Adding to the pool After market hours Thursday, Oklo provided more information about the secondary share issue it disclosed the previous day. The issue has been priced at $60 per share, more than $4 below Thursday's closing price. The company is to float nearly 6.7 million shares of its class A common stock, so the issue is set to raise gross proceeds of slightly over $400 million. The issue's underwriting syndicate is led by Goldman Sachs and Bank of America Securities and includes Citigroup, JPMorgan Chase 's J.P. Morgan, and UBS Investment Bank. The underwriters have been granted a 30-day option to collectively purchase up to 1 million additional shares at that $60 per share price. The offering should close this coming Monday, June 16. Despite recent successes, such as its receipt of a notice of intent to award (NOITA) a project on an Alaska base for the Air Force, Oklo is still at a relatively early stage as a company. As such, it continues to be hungry for capital to sustain its operations. Dilution now... and in the future? The downside of this, of course, is the dilutive nature of share issues. This one isn't particularly so, as Oklo has more than 139 million shares currently outstanding. Still, it's surely spooking investors who worry that there are more, and larger, share issues to come. Should you invest $1,000 in Oklo right now? 3 Large Cap Stocks with Growth and Value

(0:30) - Should You Be Investing Small or Large Stocks As A Value Investor (6:00) - Tracey's Top Stocks For Your Portfolio (18:45) - Episode Roundup: ADDYY, DELL, NEM Podcast@ 3 Key Takeaways Investors still love the large cap stocks. Which stocks have high Zacks Ranks and low PEG ratios right now? International companies, gold miners, and, surprisingly, a tech giant, make the list. Welcome to Episode #408 of the Value Investor Podcast. Every week, Tracey Ryniec, the editor of Zacks Value Investor portfolio, shares some of her top value investing tips and stock picks. Small cap value stocks have historically been one of the best performing asset classes over the last 80 years. But in the last 15 years, they have underperformed the large cap stocks, mostly due to the high concentration of small banks which have struggled to recover from the financial crisis. Instead of fighting the trend, why shouldn't value investors embrace it and buy large caps? Screening for Large Cap Value Stocks Tracey built a screen looking for the two top Zacks Ranks of #1s, which are Strong Buys, and #2s, which are Buys. Screening for the top Ranks should mean it will include stocks that have rising earnings estimates. To find value, Tracey used the PEG ratio which looks at the price-to-earnings ratio and divides it by growth. A PEG ratio under 1.0 usually indicates a company has both growth and value. For large caps, Tracey went larger than the usual $10 billion market cap and screened for those with at least $20 billion. This screen produced 22 stocks. 3 Large Cap Stocks with Growth and Value 1. Why American Express Stock Flopped on Friday

Sturdy payment card mainstay American Express 's (NYSE: AXP) stock was looking a bit rickety on the last trading day of the week. The company's shares lost more than 3% of their value on Friday following a report in a top financial newspaper regarding the potential defection of an important customer base. By comparison, the S&P 500 index only fell by slightly over 1% that day. Potential instability in stability That morning, The Wall Street Journal published an article stating that some of the largest American retailers are considering how to use stablecoins in their businesses. Stablecoins are cryptocurrencies that are pegged to a fiat currency, such as the dollar, and typically buttressed by cash or relatively liquid securities. Citing unidentified "people familiar with the matter," the newspaper wrote that influential companies in the sector, such as Walmart and Amazon, are even considering whether to issue their own stablecoins. The Journal also flagged sprawling online travel agency Expedia Group as a business exploring such an option. The attraction of payment instruments like stablecoins is that, if implemented well, they could save retailers vast amounts of money in fees. A key source of revenue for card payment companies is the small charges they impose on merchants accepting their cards, hence the negative AmEx investor reaction to the news. A Genius idea How far such efforts go will depend on the fate of the Genius Act, a proposed law making its way through Congress that would erect a regulatory framework for stablecoins. If it successfully makes it through the legislative process and becomes law in some useful form, stablecoins could indeed become a money-saving instrument convenient for U.S. retailers and their customers.
