Customs Dept seizes drugs worth over RM500,000 from abandoned car
KOTA BARU: The Royal Malaysian Customs Department (JKDM) seized 18.032kg of white crystal powder, suspected to be methamphetamine, worth RM585,664 from an abandoned car in Kampung Resak, Pasir Mas.
Its Kelantan director, Wan Jamal Abdul Salam Wan Long, said that acting on a tip-off, an operation team from the Kota Baru enforcement branch conducted a raid there at 7.18am last April 10 and found a Proton Iswara car abandoned in the area.
He said an inspection of the car found a sack containing 17 compressed pieces of clear white powder resembling crystals, suspected to be methamphetamine.
"Initial investigations found that the syndicate involved is believed to be using the vehicle as a temporary storage place before the drugs were distributed to customers,' he said in a statement on Sunday (May 4).
He said the case is investigated under Section 39B(1)(a) of the Dangerous Drugs Act, which provides the death penalty or life imprisonment with not less than 15 strokes of the cane if convicted.
He urged the public with information related to smuggling activities, including cigarettes, liquor, firecrackers, drugs and vehicles to call the Customs Toll Free Line at 1-800-88-8855 or by contacting any nearby customs office.

He said investigations, under Section 39B (1)(a) of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952, were still in progress.

RM1.8mil in ganja buds seized in Penang
BUTTERWORTH: The Customs Department seized more than 18kg of ganja buds worth some RM1.8mil in separate operations in Penang. Its state director Rohaizad Ali said in an operation on April 16, a team from the Customs Narcotic Unit conducted checks on parcels at the Mail Courier Centre of Pos Malaysia in Batu Kawan around 1pm. "An inspection, with the assistance of a narcotics detection dog, led to the discovery of four packages containing dried plant material believed to be ganja buds," he told a press conference at the Bagan Jermal Enforcement Storage Facility on Thursday. He said the seized drugs weighed slightly over 2.2kg and were valued at RM219,128. The parcels had been declared as containing nine units of "comic book" and were exported to the United Kingdom before being returned with the status of a "returned parcel", he added. He said investigations are ongoing to identify the owner of the parcels. In another operation at Penang International Airport around 11.35am on March 4, a team of officers discovered a piece of suspicious baggage at the baggage carousel. Rohaizad said checks found that the unclaimed baggage contained 29 transparent packs of dried plant believed to be ganja buds. The drugs weighing about 16.2kg and worth some RM1.5mil, he said. He said further investigations found the baggage had arrived from China. He said Customs believe the drugs were smuggled through a private baggage that had been checked in before departure. He said both cases are being investigated under Section 39B(1)(a) of the Dangerous Drugs Act, which carries the death penalty or life imprisonment with not less than 12 strokes of the cane upon conviction. Customs dept seizes contraband cigarettes worth RM1.44mil in Kelantan

(Customs pic) PETALING JAYA : The Kelantan customs department has seized 1.72 million contraband cigarettes worth RM1.44 million after a raid on a house at Kampung Babong in Kota Bharu. The department's Kelantan director, Wan Jamal Abdul Salam Wan Long, said the raid, carried out on May 7, was conducted by the Kota Bharu enforcement branch's operations team. 'We seized 1.72 million cigarettes of various kinds as well as an MPV. The cigarettes were valued at RM286,234. The tax duties totalled RM1.16 million,' Sinar Harian reported him as saying today. He said the MPV, costing about RM30,000, was used to distribute the cigarettes and the house was most likely rented for the purpose of storing contraband cigarettes before their distribution. The case is being investigated under sections 135(1)(e) and 135(1)(d) of the Customs Act 1967 for possession and distribution of contraband.
