Trial runs on Phase I of Metro Line 9 - the elevated stretch between Dahisar East and Kashigaon in Mira-Bhayandar - are set to commence as the corridor has been energised for traction power. The trial runs mark a major milestone in the development of the 11.4-km line, an extension of the operational Metro Line 7. Thus, Line 9 is the Metro that connects Mumbai with Mira-Bhayandar.Once fully functional, the corridor is expected to alleviate vehicular congestion on Western Express Highway (WEH) and reduce overcrowding on Western Railway's suburban trains, particularly for daily commuters from the fast-growing Mira-Bhayander belt.'We are one step closer to operationalising a critical link in Mumbai's expanding Metro network,' said a senior official from the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority MMRDA ).Metro Line 9 is a crucial north-western suburban corridor that links Dahisar (East) to Mira Bhayander, passing through densely populated nodes like Kashigaon and Mira Road. Once operational, it will serve as a feeder corridor to Line 7, which is already in service between Dahisar East and Gundavali (Andheri East). It will also offer seamless connectivity to commuters heading towards the domestic airport via the upcoming Line 7A and further onwards to South Mumbai via Line 3A.Additionally, the upcoming interchanges at Dahisar East (with Line 7) and at Gundavali (with Line 1 and Line 2A) will create a networked transport experience, reducing reliance on road-based transport and offering faster commute choices.According to MMRDA, the line shall reduce current travel times by 50-75% depending on road conditions.Urban transport experts believe the commissioning of Line 9 will decongest major arterial roads such as WEH and reduce the load on local trains, particularly during peak hours. 'The daily struggle for space in Virar-bound locals could ease marginally once commuters from Mira-Bhayandar have a reliable Metro option,' said a senior planner from MMRDA.Commercial operations are likely to begin before the end of the year after obtaining clearances from the Commissioner of Metro Railway Safety (CMRS).

1 2 Nagpur: "Celebration on Wheels" (CoW), the Nagpur Metro initiative that lets commuters rent out an entire train for private events saw 280 bookings in over four years, an average of just five in a month. The idea that took off with enthusiasm in its early days, hasn't really clicked, data shows. Launched in November 2020 with only three bookings in its debut month, CoW quickly captured the public's imagination. December 2020 alone saw 33 bookings, which remains the highest for a month so far. Bookings steadily rose to 41 in 2021 and surged to 81 in 2022, an 84% year-on-year jump. Since then, however, the booking numbers have seen gradual decline. Bookings fell to 72 in 2023, then to 38 in 2024. So far in 2025, only 12 events were logged by the end of May. A senior MahaMetro official said, "Almost 90% of the celebrations that we have are birthday celebrations. Then in addition to that, even for school trips the trains are booked. Apart from that, off-track events like yoga on the train are also organised." "For such Celebration on Wheels, special trains are given at whatever time and from whichever station the commuter has demanded, the official said." He said that MahaMetro conducts regular outreach programmes at schools and colleges to promote CoW. Booking patterns suggest a seasonal trend, with July and August seeing more such activity. With monthly footfall numbers tapering off, Metro authorities may have to rethink how to keep the concept fresh.

Schloss Bangalore allotted BKC plot, to build luxury hotel
MUMBAI: Brookfield-backed Schloss Bangalore (The Leela) has been allotted a commercial plot at the Bandra Kurla Complex (BKC), where it intends to develop a mixed-use project, including a 250-key luxury hotel, the company said in a regulatory filing. The 80-year lease has been allotted to the company-led consortium with partners Arliga Ecospace Business Park Pvt Ltd and Schloss Chanakya Pvt Ltd. The allotment is one of two mega deals signed by the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA). The other is with Goisu Realty Pvt Ltd, a subsidiary of Japanese real estate developer Sumitomo Realty & Development Company. The company has been allotted an 80-year lease for two plots at BKC. The MMRDA handed over the allotment letters for these plots on June 3, in the presence of chief minister Devendra Fadnavis and Koji Yagi, consul-general of Japan, MMRDA officials said. Together, the deals are worth ₹3,840.49 crore. The three plots collectively measure 8,6321.80sq m of built-up area, which will generate revenue of ₹3,840.49 crore for MMRDA. This is an average ₹4,44,902.80 per sq m, against a reserve price of ₹3,44,500 per sq m of built-up area for commercial plots with an 80-year lease. The leases with the two global investors are expected to provide a significant financial boost to MMRDA, which is shouldering an enormous infrastructure spend for the decade—it is executing projects worth thousands of crores across MMR, including metro corridors, elevated roads and key connectors. The revenue it generates to fund its mega-projects comes from commercial exploitation of its land bank, as well as infrastructure-related earnings and revenue earned from the metro network it operates. In February, MMRDA had called for tenders for seven of its plots in BKC. The bids for the three plots, relating to Schloss Bangalore and Goisu Realty, were a part of this round. The MMRDA found no takes for the remaining four plots – three residential and one commercial. It is expected to invite bids for these plots, once more. In 2022, MMRDA earned ₹2,067 crore when Goisu Realty Pvt Ltd secured the lease rights to two land parcels in BKC. In 2019, Goisu Realty leased a 12,486sq m plot in BKC for ₹2,238 crore, making it one of the largest land deals by a foreign company in India. With inputs from PTI

New entrance to Kengeri railway station to ease access and boost commuter safety
A new entrance to the Kengeri railway station is nearing completion, and it is expected to improve accessibility and safety for thousands of daily commuters. It aims to address a long-standing issue as many commuters cross the trolley path to move between the Metro and railway stations, risking their safety in the absence of a proper connecting route. 'The new entry will reduce the travel distance from 1.5 km to 500 metres,' said an official. 'It will offer a seamless pedestrian movement between the two stations. As part of the redevelopment, the station, classified as a Non-Suburban Group-3 category, is getting new amenities, which include a waiting hall, disabled-friendly ramp access, parking facilities covering 1,600 sq metres for two-wheelers and 1,800 sq metres for four-wheelers, and a cafeteria,' the official said. 'The development is part of the broader Amrit Bharat Station Scheme, under which Kengeri station is being revamped at an estimated cost of ₹20 crore,' the official said. Kengeri is one of the most active railway stations on the Bengaluru-Mysuru route, and is a key stop for several express and passenger trains, including the Chamundi Express, Malgudi Express, Vishwamanava Express, the Mysuru–Bengaluru MEMU, and the Chamarajanagar–Tirupati Express. Fifty eight trains halt here daily in both directions, serving around 20,000 passengers every day. 'I travel from Mysuru to Whitefield three times a week. I usually get off at the Kengeri railway station and then switch to the Metro. The new entry will save nearly 15 minutes. Now, I had to hurry and cross the tracks to make it on time. This development is a big relief for commuters like me,' said Varsha N., a software engineer and resident of Mysuru. Pradeep Gowda, a resident of Rajarajeshwari Nagar, said, 'The current detour makes it difficult for senior citizens and those carrying luggage. A proper entry will make a big difference, especially during peak hours.'
