State govt approves loan guarantee for 6 Metro projects, paves way for int'l funds
Mumbai: The Maharashtra govt approved a loan guarantee for six Metro projects being implemented by the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA), paving the way for funding from international financial institutions to continue ongoing construction work. The corridors include Metro Lines 5 (Thane-Bhiwandi-Kalyan), 6 (Swami Samarth Nagar–Vikhroli), 9 (Dahisar East–Mira Bhayandar), 10 (Gaimukh–Shivaji Chowk, Mira Road), 11 (Wadala–CSMT), and the 3.3-km underground extension of Metro Line 7 from Gundavali to the international airport via Marol. These projects are either under construction or in advanced planning stages and require substantial funding due to a mix of elevated and underground alignments. The proposal was cleared at a recent cabinet meeting chaired by the chief minister. With this clearance, MMRDA can now approach multilateral funding agencies such as the Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank and the Asian Development Bank to raise loans. However, the responsibility for repaying the loans, including interest and other liabilities, will lie entirely with MMRDA. The state's role is limited to acting as a guarantor to facilitate the loans. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like No annual fees for life UnionBank Credit Card Apply Now Undo You Can Also Check: Mumbai AQI | Weather in Mumbai | Bank Holidays in Mumbai | Public Holidays in Mumbai Officials said the cumulative cost of the six corridors exceeds Rs 36,000 crore. Given the scale and complexity of these projects, financial support was crucial to avoid delays and prevent cost escalation. The approval also ensures that tendering and contracting activities for these lines can proceed without hurdles. According to MMRDA officials, the state guarantee was essential to meet eligibility norms set by funding institutions. Without this backing, negotiations with lenders would have stalled or required costly financial restructuring. The projects are part of MMRDA's larger vision to create a 300-km metro network by the end of the decade. Metro Lines 5, 6, and 9 are expected to decongest the central and western suburbs, while Lines 10 and 11 will improve connectivity in the Mira-Bhayandar and south Mumbai regions. The Gundavali–CSMIA extension will offer a crucial airport link from the western suburbs. Once operational, these lines are expected to carry lakhs of commuters daily and significantly reduce road traffic.

CMRS completes inspection of Phase-1 of Mumbai Metro Lines 2B, 9. Commercial operations expected by the end of this year
Mumbai, July 3: The Commissioner of Metro Railway Safety (CMRS) completed the safety inspection of Phase 1 of Mumbai Metro Line 2B and Metro Line 9 on Friday. The Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA), which is the implementing agency for both metro lines, said the safety inspection was an important milestone before commencing passenger services on the two sections. 'After the inspection, the CMRS will report a checklist of compliance based on observations. A final inspection will be organised after making the necessary corrections before opening for the public, likely by the end of this year. Approval for opening can only be given after this last inspection to commence commercial operations on these lines,' a source told The Indian Express. On Friday, senior railway officials inspected overhead electric gear, signalling and communication systems, track geometry, and station facilities. The review also encompassed civil engineering features such as platform structures, emergency response systems, and passenger safety provisions. These inspections ensure that safety standards are met before new metro lines start commercial services. Once all the requirements are fulfilled and the safety certificate is issued by CMRS, the lines will be cleared for opening. Metro Line 2B Phase 1 covers a stretch of 5.39 kilometres and includes five stations between Mandale and Diamond Garden. This line is part of a larger corridor connecting DN Nagar to Mandale in the eastern suburbs. On the other hand, Phase 1 of Metro Line 9 is 4.4 kilometres long with four stations starting from Dahisar (East) to Kashigaon. The line is being constructed as an extension of Metro Line 7 from Dahisar East to Mira Bhayandar and is likely to enhance connectivity in the western suburbs.
