Pakistan moves to draft first esports policy with UK and Commonwealth support
The remarks came after a meeting between Pakistan's Ministry of IT and Telecommunication and representatives from the British Esports Federation and Commonwealth Secretariat. The collaboration aims to guide the policy's development and support the formation of a national esports federation.
'We have immense young talent [but] commercialization is the bottleneck,' Federal Minister for IT and Telecommunication Shaza Fatima Khawaja said during the meeting, according to an official statement released later. 'We seek your support to help Pakistani developers reach international markets.'
While Pakistan has a growing number of young game developers, some already publishing on platforms like SEGA and Nintendo, most lack access to funding, publishing infrastructure or export pathways.
The statement said the development of a national policy is aimed at formally recognizing esports as an economic sector and unlocking its potential as a structured platform for youth-driven innovation and employment.
The policy under development includes a strategy focused on training in game-tech, youth-led funding schemes and support for bringing locally developed games to market.
Officials said the policy will be shaped using international best practices and aligned with Pakistan's wider goals for youth engagement and digital innovation.
Pakistan considers IT a priority sector in its broader economic strategy, hoping to boost digital exports, reduce youth unemployment and build global partnerships in creative tech.
The inclusion of esports in this agenda reflects a shift toward recognizing digital entertainment as a viable economic contributor.

Pakistan partners with TikTok to launch science and technology feed, boost education access
KARACHI: Pakistan, in partnership with video-streaming app TikTok, on Monday launched its dedicated Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) feed, the Pakistani information technology (IT) ministry said, reinforcing the country's commitment to make high-quality educational content more accessible and engaging for all. The new STEM feed on TikTok is a dedicated, in-app experience where users can explore a curated stream of high-quality content that is designed to spark curiosity, promote critical thinking and expand digital learning opportunities, especially for students, educators and young professionals, across Pakistan, according to the IT ministry. TikTok is also partnering with leading academic institutions across the country to launch a training program for teachers, educators and instructors. These trainings are focused on empowering them with the tools, techniques and best practices needed to create compelling, informative and engaging STEM content tailored for short-form video. 'This initiative is aligned with our broader vision to use digital platforms to enhance education and skill development in Pakistan,' Pakistan's Information Technology and Telecommunication Minister Shaza Fatima Khawaja said. 'TikTok's STEM feed is an excellent example of how technology can democratize access to knowledge and empower our youth, including aspiring female students, to explore new career pathways in science and technology.' The minister announced that her government was developing a new policy to provide smartphones to Pakistanis on easy installments, ensuring digital devices are accessible to every individual. Under the DigiSkills program, she said, 100,000 youth had been trained in the past year and the target for this year is to provide artificial intelligence (AI) training to 1 million children. State Minister for Federal Education and Professional Training Wajiha Qamar welcomed the launch of TikTok's dedicated STEM Feed in Pakistan as a step toward making science and technology more accessible and relatable to Pakistani youth. 'Digital platforms, when used responsibly, can become powerful tools for education, creativity, and empowerment. This initiative aligns with our national goals to promote STEM learning and build a future-ready generation— curious, skilled, and inspired,' she said. TikTok is wildly popular in Pakistan, in part because of its accessibility to a population with low literacy levels. In addition to the dedicated feed, TikTok will be actively nurturing Pakistan's local STEM creator community, providing training and guidance to increase the volume and quality of STEM content across the platform in English, Urdu and regional languages as well, according to the IT ministry. This effort is aimed at building a self-sustaining educational ecosystem where both formal educators and independent creators contribute to a shared mission: making STEM education fun, inclusive, and discoverable. The video-sharing platform has launched a dedicated hashtag #StemTok as well as a landing page, where it will feature content created by partners, creators and publishers, providing easy access to local language STEM content in Pakistan. 'The launch of the TikTok STEM feed in Pakistan marks an exciting milestone in our mission to inspire and educate through creativity,' said Fahad Muhammad Khan Niazi, TikTok's head of public policy and government relations in Pakistan. 'By partnering with the MoITT (Ministry of Information Technology and Telecommunication), Government of Pakistan, and by collaborating with prestigious academic institutions, we are investing in Pakistan's future talent. STEM education has the power to transform lives, and we are proud to be supporting its digital evolution on TikTok.' China expresses interest in investing in seed development, precision farming in Pakistan, ministry says
KARACHI: A high-powered Chinese delegation has expressed 'keen interest' in making investments in seed development, precision farming, smart irrigation systems and agro-processing in Pakistan, the Pakistani national food security ministry said on Tuesday. The Chinese delegation, comprising senior officials, agricultural scientists, and private sector representatives, met with National Food Security Minister Rana Tanveer Hussain to explore enhanced cooperation in the field of agriculture. The two sides discussed joint strategies to modernize Pakistan's agricultural sector and to initiate collaborative efforts in research, innovation and investment, with the delegation highlighting China's agricultural advancements and willingness to transfer expertise. 'Through collaboration with China, Pakistan can introduce scientific research, climate-resilient practices, and modern technology that will uplift the productivity of local farmers and ensure long-term food security,' Hussain told the Chinese delegates, stressing the urgent need to formalize agreements between Pakistani and Chinese agricultural institutions. The agriculture sector contributes nearly a quarter of Pakistan's gross domestic product (GDP) and employs 37 percent of the national labor force, according to the United Nations' Food and Agriculture Organization. However, a fast-growing population, climate change and poor resource management have greatly impacted Pakistan's crops in recent years, prompting officials to ponder alternative ways to enhance production. Pakistan also decided in June last year to send nearly 1,000 graduates to China to train in methods and techniques to enhance Pakistani agricultural production. Of them, around 300 Pakistani graduates this month completed training in water-saving irrigation, seed production, animal husbandry, agriculture production and prevention of post-harvest losses in China's Shaanxi province. During Tuesday's meeting with Chinese delegates, Hussain proposed signing multiple memorandums of understanding (MoUs) focusing on joint research in areas such as biotechnology, crop improvement, pest control and sustainable agricultural practices, according to the national food security ministry. He also underscored the importance of establishing long-term frameworks for the exchange of scientists, technical training, and capacity-building initiatives to strengthen Pakistan's agricultural institutions. 'Hussain noted that this partnership must go beyond investment and move toward structured collaboration in research and development,' the ministry said. 'The Chinese delegation appreciated the Minister's strategic vision and assured full support from their government and private sector to contribute to Pakistan's agricultural transformation… The meeting concluded with a shared commitment to elevate the Pakistan-China partnership in agriculture to a new level, ensuring tangible outcomes in the coming months through structured planning and implementation.'
