Brits say they 'still feel European' despite Brexit - and reveal what they love most about Europe

Daily Mail01-08-2025
Brits have revealed 30 of their favourite things about Europe - as three in four UK nationals admit they still feel European at heart despite Brexit.
In a new study conducted by TUI, seasoned travellers were asked to share the bits of Europe they love most - from local food to key landmarks to hidden gems.
The UK withdrew from the European Union (EU) in 2020, but that hasn't stopped a whopping 74 per cent of Brits continuing to feel a strong connection to Europe.
And, seemingly, we're an indisputable nation of food lovers, as exploring food markets emerged as Brits' top European pastime, with 30 per cent of respondents agreeing that checking out our neighbours' local delights fulfills their trips.
Coming in at a close second, as listed by 29 per cent of respondents, is watching the world go by while enjoying a warming cup of coffee.
In addition, a quarter of Brits say they enjoy exploring foreign supermarkets, while over a fifth noted nothing beats a fresh pastry during a morning trip to the boulangerie.
Other favourite food-related aspects of Europe include trying an assortment of foreign crisps (16 per cent), tucking into Greek salads (17 per cent) and sipping on Aperol sundowners (11 per cent).
In terms of activities and sightseeing, a fifth of Brits say they enjoy exploring Roman ruins, while 18 per cent shared an appreciation for Greek island sunsets.
Swimming in hidden coves (19 per cent) also made the list, as did evening shopping (16 per cent), visiting vineyards (13 per cent) and admiring Renaissance art (12 per cent).
Though 73 per cent of Brits say the Mediterranean is their top holiday destination, four in five hope to explore off the beaten track in 2026.
Croatia's Korčula island emerged as Europe's most desired hidden most desired hidden gem, capturing 60 per cent of votes, followed by Sibiu, Romania (39 per cent), Tallinn, Estonia (37 per cent) and Kotor, Montenegro (32 per cent).
Riga, Latvia, and Reykjavik, Iceland, were also named as some of the leading European spots British holidaymakers would like to visit.
TUI UK&I's Commercial Director, Chris Logan, said: 'The amazing thing about Europe is that we have so much to explore right on our doorstep.
'Beautiful beaches, delicious cuisines, rich history and culture or simply the chance to get away from it all and relax.
'But what's really clear from this research is that it's often the small moments and what you discover along the way that stays in people's minds, plus there's a real appetite for exploring more of Europe.
It comes as Europe's best holiday city has been revealed, with voters praising the idyllic location for its incredible views, budget-friendly pizza and affordable flights from the UK.
In a survey conducted by luxury magazine Travel + Leisure, readers cast votes for their favourite city worldwide, with the Italian hotspot of Florence taking the crown as Europe's most loved.
Frequented by between 10 and 16million holidaymakers each year, sunseekers eagerly flock to the Tuscan city due to its rich Renaissance art and architecture, walkable city center and delicious food.
Described by Travel + Leisure as a 'must-see' thanks to its 'artistic treasures', 'superlative shopping' and 'wide selection of hotels', Florence, often known simply as 'The Beautiful', gained an overall reader score of 90.08.
Taking the top spot in Europe and 11th in the world, Florence even beat the popular European cities of Seville, Spain, Instanbul, Turkey and fellow Italian city of Rome.

What to expect from Heathrow's 'Redefine Your Beauty' experiences

As someone who's regularly jetting off to different corners of the globe for work, to me the airport has come to represent just a means to an end: Pret, security queue, working charging socket. After years of this, I've pretty much got my routine on lockdown, which usually involves some purely functional eating, a quick pint in Spoons, and a last-minute visit to Duty Free to buy a moisturiser because I forgot mine, again. A little pre-flight pampering So, when I heard Heathrow was rolling out a new experiential beauty and wellness campaign across all four terminals, with pop-up beauty bars, luxury treatments and skincare tech that tells you things about your face you didn't even know were possible, I was curious. Airports are not where I usually go to feel (or look) my best. But a quick massage and some free beauty advice before a flight? Oh, go on then. I'm due to fly out of Terminal 5 soon, which means I'll get to check out the Personal Shopper Lounge and see what the hype is about. There's a full-on treatment menu, the kind you'd expect at a boutique spa, except here, it's been designed for travellers on the move, like me, with treatments lasting between 10 and 20 minutes. How often can you say an airport is offering La Mer facials, Elemis LED masks, Molton Brown hand massages and Estée Lauder's 'Age Reversal Sculpt Ritual' facial? From neck and shoulder massages to cryotherapy and ultrasonic peels, it's the kind of thing you'd usually have to schedule weeks in advance, and here it is, just a stone's throw from your departure gate. I might even consider swapping my pre-flight pint for something a little more restorative. Glow-ups, goodie bags and gourmet salads Outside the lounge, the terminals are set to be abuzz with pop-up beauty bars from brands like Charlotte Tilbury, MAC, Molton Brown and Penhaligon's – offering live demos, free mini-treatments and genuinely helpful skincare advice. There's even a skin analysis station (powered by tech that looks like it comes from the year 3000), and perfume engraving on the spot. Fancy. I wasn't planning to splurge £200 on more beauty products, but it's hard to resist when there's a free luxury beauty bag up for grabs when you do, packed with products from Elizabeth Arden, Versace, Benefit, Amouage and Elemis, to name a few. The offer's available in all the main World Duty Free stores, and if you're a Heathrow Rewards member, you can earn double points on qualifying beauty buys (up to 1,000 points), which definitely makes me feel a little better about splashing the cash. Even the food spots are jumping on board with the wellness vibes. I usually go for a failsafe Joe & The Juice Tunacado, but I've spotted a Clean Green smoothie at Jones the Grocer and a Firecracker Chicken Salad from Leon. I might even grab a poké bowl from YO! Sushi for the flight, although word on the street is the plane meal is steamed seabream with romesco. I never thought I'd describe an airport experience as relaxing and rejuvenating, but this campaign is definitely out to challenge me. Between the luxurious treatments and nutritious food choices, Heathrow has created the first airport rendezvous that won't leave you feeling like you need a holiday from your holiday. If you find yourself passing through Heathrow between now and early October, don't just bolt straight to your gate. Give yourself an extra 30 minutes, book yourself in for a quick massage or facial, and visit World Duty Free to grab that beauty bag full of goodies to make your holiday that little bit more special.

Brit won't travel anywhere without his air fryer swears by luggage hack

Jamie, a 28-year-old from Manchester, is a man of home comforts. So much so, whenever and wherever he travels, he makes sure to take his favourite kitchen item with him A hungry Brit always takes his air fryer with him on holiday. ‌ Jamie, from Manchester, is a man of home comforts. So much so, whenever and wherever he travels, he makes sure to take his favourite kitchen item with him. 'My air fryer is an absolute essential part of my travels, and I struggle to go away without it," the 28-year-old said. ‌ 'From France and Italy to the USA, and from plane to train, my air fryer has come with me everywhere to ensure I'm never far from a healthy, convenient meal. It's such a hack for me when going on holiday that I've even unpacked and repacked my entire car before a trip to ensure I had space to fit my air fryer in." ‌ New research reveals British holidaymakers are prioritising packing their air fryer over clothes or toiletries – with a quarter of millennials saying they would pay an extra baggage fee just to bring it along. It comes as air fryer owners have been urged to make sure their appliances are properly cleaned. 'I went sunbedless for a week because I refuse to be selfish like everyone else' For one in five Brits, air fryer access directly influences where they stay, with one in seven saying they would actively avoid accommodation without one. Over a quarter asked said they would take their air fryer on holiday if there was an easier way to transport it. ‌ Happily for those air fryer mad survey respondents, electrical retailer AO has just unveiled the Frequent Fryer suitcase: a first-of-its-kind case custom-built to house and proudly display a single-drawer air fryer. Complete with transparent front panel, the case is specifically designed so air fryer obsessed Brits can showcase their Frequent Fryer status with pride The bag fits within airport luggage regulations, meaning crisping croquetas in Barcelona, perfecting pomme frités in Paris and heating through a hot dog in the US has become that much easier. Isabella Forgione, small appliance expert at AO, said: 'We know how important home comforts are to our customers and for many, the air fryer tops the list. The Frequent Fryer Case is a fun but functional response to a growing trend, making it easier than ever to take a much-loved appliance on holiday.' A Frequent Fryer case will drop at 12pm on Tuesday, August on AO's TikTok shop, giving fans the chance to get their hands on the ultimate travel companion — but they'll have to act fast to snap up the early model. Air fryers aren't the only odd thing that Brits bring on holiday with them. A separate poll found one in 20 Brits have admitted to bringing an oven tray, toaster or kettle on holiday. Home comforts are clearly a big deal, with 47% of people saying they've packed food and drink that can't be purchased at their destination - think tea bags, baked beans and crisps to name a few.
