Alexei Popyrin rallies to stun Holger Rune and keep Canadian title defence alive
The Australian extended his winning streak at the Canadian ATP Masters 1000 to nine matches after a breakthrough title at the event last year.
Popyrin, seeded 18th, will face the winner of the late match between top-seeded Alexander Zverev of Germany and No 14 Francisco Cerundolo of Argentina.
Zverev, ranked third in the world, ended up the top seed with top-ranked Jannik Sinner – the 2023 winner – and No 2 Carlos Alcaraz skipping the hard-court event that ends Thursday. World No 5 Jack Draper and No 6 Novak Djokovic also sat out.
Alex Michelsen reached the quarter-finals in the afternoon, topping fellow American Learner Tien 6-3, 6-3. Michelsen will face 11th-seeded Karen Khachanov of Russia, a 6-4, 7-5 winner over eighth-seeded Casper Ruud of Norway.

NBA legend Damian Lillard takes shock new job after suffering Achilles tear
NBA star Damian Lillard has taken over as general manager at his former college while he recovers from a torn Achilles tendon. Lillard is a nine-time All-star who last month signed a three-year $42million contract with the Portland Trail Blazers. But rather than spend next season on the sidelines, Lillard has accepted a job as the general manager at his alma mater, Weber State. The 35-year-old spent four seasons at Weber State in Utah before being drafted sixth overall by Portland in 2012. He joined the Bucks in 2023 and remained there until July, when he was waived. Lillard had helped Milwaukee reach the NBA playoffs last season. But he tore his left Achilles tendon in Game 4 of the first round of the postseason. Lillard underwent surgery in May and is expected to miss the entire 2025-26 season. A legacy continues in Ogden. 'My relationship with coach (Eric) Duft and this program means a lot to me, and seeing the success of the program means a lot to me,' Lillard said, per the Ogden Standard-Examiner. 'I feel like I can do a lot to help the program be successful, to help the players even individually continue to grow their careers past college, that's something that I'm passionate about.' The Weber State Wildcats haven't made the NCAA Tournament since 2016. They went 12-22 last season. 'I believe in what this program represents and the culture that continues to grow at Weber State,' Lillard said in a statement.

Colts RB Salvon Ahmed carted off practice field
August 3 - Indianapolis Colts running back Salvon Ahmed sustained an apparent severe injury to his right leg during practice on Sunday and was carted off the practice field. The severity of the injury was not immediately known for Ahmed, who was injured after being dragged down from behind by undrafted safety Trey Washington. Practice immediately was stopped after the tackle as trainers rushed to Ahmed. They placed his leg in an air cast while Washington could be seen being consoled by his teammates. Ahmed, 26, last played in an NFL game in 2023. He spent last season on the practice squads of the Denver Broncos and Colts. Ahmed has 163 carries for 593 yards and five touchdowns in 38 career games (four starts) for the Miami Dolphins. --Field Level Media

Canada's McIntosh hungry for more after world championship success
Aug 3 (Reuters) - Canadian sensation Summer McIntosh fell just short in her quest to match Michael Phelps's feat of winning five individual gold medals at a single world championships but that has given her the motivation to improve even more. McIntosh won the 400 metres individual medley (IM) title on the final day of the world championships in Singapore on Sunday, adding to her 200 IM, 200 butterfly and 400 freestyle golds that saw her named the best female swimmer of the meeting. The three-times Olympic champion's only failure to stand atop the podium in an individual event came in the 800 freestyle, in which she finished with bronze as American great Katie Ledecky took the victory. "I think it was very obvious that my goal was five golds. Time just didn't matter. I just wanted to get my hand on the wall the first five times," McIntosh said of her campaign. "I fell short of that but I think it's just going to keep me hungry and push, and keep moving forward. "I think this meet, I learned more than any other meet ever. And that says a lot. The thing I'm learning from the most is the bronze and 800 freestyle. And that's going to keep me hungry moving into next season and into LA (Los Angeles Olympics)." McIntosh has plenty to be proud of, however, as she became just the third swimmer to win five individual medals at a world championships after Phelps and Swede Sarah Sjostrom. The 18-year-old, who also swam for Canada in the 4x100 medley relay on Sunday, said she had never had such a challenging programme, adding: "I've never done a double before, also doing five individual events. "I've never done that before, let alone one of them being the 800. My sleep has never been this good. I've never been a good sleeper during meets. I've been able to relax and have amazing sleep. "Overall, happy with my meet but always want more. I'm just going to celebrate my wins and kind of take a reset heading into next season. The negatives, I'm going to apply to next season."
