Wyoming mom confesses to shooting 4 daughters before turning gun on herself
One of the young victims reportedly survived the attack, but was clinging to life Thursday.
The tragic incident occurred Monday when Tranyelle Harshman phoned law enforcement around 1:30 p.m. to report her daughters, ages 2-9, had been shot, according to the Big Horn County Police Department.
'When dispatchers asked the status of the gunshot victims, the female stated that she believed them to be deceased,' police said, adding that Harshman then expressed her intent to fatally shoot herself.
The 32-year-old mother told the dispatcher that law enforcement would find two of the victims in a crib on the second floor of her home and the other two in a lower-level bedroom they shared. She said that she'd be found in her upstairs bedroom, then disconnected the call despite the dispatcher's multiple attempts to keep her on the line.
When authorities arrived to the Byron residence roughly five minutes later, they found all four children and the mother with gunshot wounds to the head. Two of the young victims, ages 2 and 9, were pronounced dead at the scene.
The other two girls, ages 2 and 7, were found alive but critically wounded. They were taken to a hospital where the 2-year-old died 'a very short time later due to the extent of her injuries,' police said.
Harshman was also found seriously wounded on Monday from a seemingly self-inflicted gunshot wound. Police confirmed Tuesday night that she died earlier that day in an northern Wyoming hospital, reported local NBC affiliate KULR8.
As of Thursday, the 7-year-old victim was still alive in a Salt Lake City hospital, where she'd been airlifted for advanced treatment, according to a GoFundMe set up for Cliff Harshman, the father of the 2-year-old girls.
Quinn Blackmer, the father of the two older girls, told Montana station KTVQ that he's furious over the killing, saying 'there's no playbook' for handling the death of one daughter and the near-fatal shooting of another.
'I'm trying my hardest to bury that for a while and to focus on the now, because that anger isn't going to bring my child back,' Blackmer said.
People who knew the victims told Montana station KRTV that their mother was being treated for mental health issues including postpartum depression before she apparently snapped.
Friends of the Harshman family said the cost of funeral expenses and support for the survivors presents an additional obstacle during an already difficult time. The GoFundMe had raised over $100,000 as of Thursday afternoon.

‘Beloved' 18-year-old shot dead at house party, NM officials say. Man sentenced
A man has been sentenced to prison in connection to the 2022 shooting that left a 'beloved' 18-year-old dead, New Mexico officials said. In December 2022, now-21-year-old Jesse Parra showed up uninvited to an Albuquerque house party with Cruz Medina, Isaiah Espinosa and Jesse Barrios after learning about it on social media, according to an Aug. 19 Facebook post by the Bernalillo County District Attorney's Office. After they were asked to leave because they were taking photos with guns, they returned and began shooting, officials said. Parra drove the car during the shooting, 'maneuvering the vehicle so the two shooters could fire at the home and flee the scene,' officials said. An 18-year-old, later identified as Jada Gonzales, was fatally shot in the stomach, officials said. Gonzales had plans to attend Texas Christian University and was an 'exemplary student' who worked two jobs, a GoFundMe page to raise money for funeral expenses said. 'This is the greatest pain I've ever known and not one I'd wish any parent to ever feel,' the GoFundMe page said. Medina, then 16, was sentenced to 24 years in prison, officials said. Espinosa, 16 at the time and the one accused of firing the shot that killed Gonzales, was sentenced to 29 years in prison, prosecutors said. Barrios, then 18, 'recorded the crime on his phone and was taken into ICE custody,' prosecutors said. In April, Parra pleaded guilty to charges of shooting at a dwelling or occupied building resulting in death, conspiracy to commit shooting at a dwelling or occupied building resulting in death and tampering with evidence, officials said. He was sentenced to 12 years in prison, officials said. 'Jada Brooke Gonzales touched many lives and hearts and we are all devastated by this loss,' the GoFundMe page said.

Nearly 80 Afghans, including children dead after bus crash via Iran
Aug. 20 (UPI) -- Nearly 80 Afghan nationals, including more than a dozen children, died in a fiery bus crash on its way out of Iran to Afghanistan in Iran's ongoing push to rid millions of foreigners. The Kabul-bound bus crashed late Tuesday night during a long ride on treacherous Afghani terrain after colliding with another vehicle and a motorbike near the Iranian border in the western Afghan province of Herat. According to officials, 78 people died that included 17 children. "The car was carrying fuel and it caught fire after a head-on collision with the bus, fully loaded with passengers," according to Ahmadullah Muttaqi, a government communications official in Taliban-ruled Afghanistan, told NBC and The New York Times. Muttaqi added the bus also caught fire and "the majority of people on the bus died of burn injuries." On Wednesday, the bodies were transferred to Afghanistan's capital Kabul. Video footage by Afghan news outlet Etilaatroz depicted the large bus engulfed in flames as firefighters battled the blaze and Afghans joined in to aid and its charred remain later hauled away by a larger truck. "These Afghan refugees were returning home after spending a long time in Iran, but they could not reach their destination as their bus met with a tragic accident," Muttaqi stated. The Iranian regime has cracked down on undocumented nationals. It comes as Iran has moved to expel nearly 2 million Afghan nationals from within its border, some who have lived in Iran for decades. More than 1.2 million since June have forcibly been returned to troubled Afghanistan as Iranian officials have accused Afghans of spying for Israel following its brief military conflict around spring. Husband killed trying to break up brawl on night out with wife, Texas family says
A Texas man was fatally stabbed while trying to break up a brawl during a night out with his wife, his family says. Officers responded to a call about a 'large disturbance between multiple individuals' in a parking lot on the city's northeast side at about 12:10 a.m. Sunday, Aug. 17, the News Braunfels Police Department said in a news release. A 52-year-old old man with stab wounds was taken to a hospital where he later died, police said. Mario Saldana and his wife were leaving El Flaco Event Center after a party when the fight broke out, his wife, Rosanna Perez, told KENS, adding that her husband stepped in despite not knowing any of the people involved. 'I told my husband, we needed to leave, let's go,' she told the station. 'Immediately he's like, 'No, let me go tell these people to calm down, they need to stop.' He was trying to deescalate the situation.' A man, later identified as 55-year-old David Saldana, killed Mario Saldana, according to police. 'He tried to separate people, and I guess they got angry,' Perez told KSAT. 'Next thing, he stabbed him. This was something that didn't need to happen.' There's no relation between Mario Saldana and David Saldana, the outlet reported. 'He stabbed him first in the chest, several times,' Perez told KENS. 'We tried to get away, and I guess that wasn't enough for him. He came and tackled him to the ground and stabbed him in the back.' Mario Saldana didn't have life insurance and was the 'sole provider' for his family so Perez could stay home to take care of her mother full time, according to a GoFundMe. 'Mario always had an optimistic attitude toward life and lived life to the fullest. He loved to joke around and lift people's spirits. And I know that he loved all of us dearly,' it read. David Saldana was arrested on a charge of murder, and his bond is set at $500,000, jail records show.
