FIR Against BJP Leader Over Social Media Post on Suhas Shetty Murder Case
MANGALURU: The registration of a police complaint against BJP Mahila Morcha state secretary and former city councillor Shwetha Poojary has stirred a political row in coastal Karnataka. The FIR follows a Facebook post in which Poojary questioned the role of authorities in the investigation into the murder of Hindu activist Suhas Shetty.
Shetty was killed in Bajpe recently, and CCTV footage purportedly showing two burqa-clad women conversing with the accused near the crime scene had gone viral, prompting widespread speculation. Referring to this, Poojary in her social media post asked why the women had not been taken into custody and why District-in-Charge Minister Dinesh Gundu Rao had remained silent.
The post led a Congress worker to file a complaint, prompting the police to book Poojary under Sections 192, 196, 353(1)(b), and 353(2) of the IPC, among others. The action has drawn criticism from right-wing organisations, who termed it an attempt to stifle dissent and questioned the government's commitment to freedom of expression.
'This is an effort to suppress those raising legitimate questions about the investigation,' said a BJP functionary who requested anonymity.

External affairs minister S Jaishankar met members of BJP lawmaker Baijayant Panda-headed diplomatic delegation, which returned from its four-nation tour on Tuesday, and told them that the journey was successful and the objectives have been completed. The multi-party delegation, which left Delhi on May 24, was the first to return after touring Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, Bahrain and Algeria. The delegation members met Jaishankar at his office and presented him a report on how they exposed Pakistan in various countries over its support to terrorism. Former foreign secretary Harsh Vardhan Shringla, who was part of the delegation, said the meeting with Jaishankar was 'quite fruitful'. 'The meeting was really good; feedback was given to the external affairs minister. All delegation members shared their views, and I think the minister got the feedback from the mission as well. But this time, the delegates have shared it first-hand. He (Jaishankar) said that the journey was quite successful, our objectives were completed, and he congratulated the delegation members and leaders,' Shringla added. Panda in a post on X said: 'When it comes to standing up for India, when it comes to taking a strong stand against cross-border terrorism sponsored by Pakistan, there was no let-up from anybody. All of our delegates were united and gave a very strong message — and it was very well received.' 'The new normal is very clear: we will retaliate, we will extract a cost from Pakistan,' he added. In an earlier post after the completion of the key diplomatic tour, Panda said that over the past few days, the delegation 'carried India's strong message against terrorism, reinforced historic ties, and engaged in high-level dialogues.' He also expressed gratitude for the warm hospitality and meaningful discussions in each country. 'A special appreciation to my fellow delegation members — their insights, dedication, and teamwork were crucial in amplifying India's voice throughout this mission,' he added. The delegation also comprises BJP leaders Nishikant Dubey, Phangnon Konyak, and Rekha Sharma, AIMIM lawmaker Asaduddin Owaisi, Satnam Sandhu (nominated), former minister Ghulam Nabi Azad and Shringla. Jaishankar is expected to meet the remaining six delegations before Prime Minister Narendra Modi meets all members of the seven delegations next week. A total of seven delegations, led by Congress lawmaker Shashi Tharoor, NCP(SP)'s Supriya Sule, BJP's Ravishankar Prasad and Panda, Shiv Sena's Srikant Shinde, DMK leader K Kanimozhi and JD(U) lawmaker Sanjay Jha went to 38 countries and the European headquarters of Brussels. A total of 55 leaders including lawmakers, former diplomats and former Union ministers formed the delegations. They aimed at reaching out to the international community on Pakistan's designs and India's response to terror after the April 22 Pahalgam terror attack that killed 26 civilians. India carried out precision strikes on terror infrastructure in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir on May 7 under Operation Sindoor, following which Pakistan attempted to attack the Indian military bases over the next three days. The Indian side responded strongly to the Pakistani actions. Speaking about the tour, Nishikant Dubey claimed: 'All countries are both impressed and astonished by the nation's development under the leadership of PM Modi. All countries consider India their friend and are united against Pakistan. Everyone is interested in doing business with us. All members of our delegation expressed views on Pakistan's weakness and the fact that India has no option but to attack Pakistan to ensure the safety of its citizens.'

13 booked for ₹71.5 lakh loan fraud using fake IDs in Gurugram
At least 13 suspects have been booked for allegedly defrauding a private sector bank of ₹71.5 lakh by availing personal loans using forged documents and diverting the funds to Mumbai, police said on Tuesday. According to investigators, the loans were issued between May 2022 and February 2024 from a Sector 14 branch of a reputed private bank. The fraud came to light in February this year after the bank initiated an internal inquiry when several borrowers stopped paying their monthly instalments. A senior police officer said the so-called customers were later found to be non-existent, having used fake documents to pose as employees of well-known automobile and spare parts manufacturing firms in Gurugram. All had submitted forged salary slips, bank statements, and employment records, allegedly showing 4–8 years of service. 'These 13 'ghost' customers had submitted six common residential addresses. However, during verification, none of them were found to reside there,' the officer said. 'There is a strong possibility that either some bank officials have connived with the suspect to clear the loans or they didn't carry out any physical verification of the addresses and loans were disbursed only on the basis of documents to meet target pressures,' he added. Police further revealed that loan proceeds from 10 customers were transferred to a Mumbai-based logistics firm, while the remaining three transferred funds directly into the firm owner's account immediately after loan disbursal. Sandeep Kumar, public relations officer of Gurugram police, said the Economic Offences Wing (EOW) is investigating. 'They will arrest the suspects soon on the basis of the evidence,' he added. Based on a complaint filed on March 3 by the bank's regional officer, an FIR was registered Monday at Sector 14 police station under IPC sections 120B, 420, 467, 468, and 471. .

Impeachment motion against Justice Varma: Govt reaches out to Opposition to build consensus ahead of Monsoon Session
Initiating the process for bringing an impeachment motion against former Delhi High Court judge Justice Yashwant Varma during the upcoming Monsoon Session of Parliament, the government reached out to Opposition parties on Tuesday in an attempt to build political consensus. Confirming this, Union Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju told The Indian Express: 'I have reached out to the leaders of all major political parties. It's not a political issue, it's a matter of seriousness related to corruption in the judiciary. There is no scope for any political angle in it. We will evolve a consensus.' The move comes a month after a three-member panel set up by the Supreme Court, on May 3, had found credence in the allegations that wads of currency notes were discovered at Justice Varma's official residence when a fire broke out there on March 14. He has since been transferred to the Allahabad High Court. According to sources, Home Minister Amit Shah and Law Minister Arjun Ram Meghwal met Prime Minister Narendra Modi earlier on Tuesday to finalise preparations for the exercise. Shah, along with Leader of the House in Rajya Sabha J P Nadda, also met Vice President and Rajya Sabha Chairman Jagdeep Dhankhar. Following these meetings, Rijiju reached out to Opposition leaders. On May 28, The Indian Express had reported that the government was likely to bring an impeachment motion in the Monsoon Session, which is likely to begin in the third week of July. According to sources, Congress leader Jairam Ramesh was among those who Rijiju spoke to on Tuesday. Sources in the Congress said the party was discussing the issue but indicated that it would not have a problem in supporting the move. The party, in fact, is of the view that the government should convene a special session of Parliament at the earliest to set in motion the process and also devise a mechanism for ensuring judicial accountability. This is in line with the resolution passed by the Congress at the April AICC session in Ahmedabad, which said: 'While the Congress recognises that an independent judiciary is intrinsic to protection of Constitutional principles and democracy, it is also true that the judiciary must set safeguards and standards for accountability. A mechanism for judicial accountability, without compromising judicial independence, is the need of the hour.' The Opposition has been given to understand that Meghwal himself could move the motion seeking Justice Varma's impeachment, based on the report of the Supreme Court-appointed committee. As per the Judges Inquiry Act, 1968, a complaint against a judge has to be made through a resolution signed at least by 100 members if moved in Lok Sabha and 50 members if initiated in Rajya Sabha. Once the MPs submit the motion, the presiding officer of the House can either accept or reject it. With the government taking the initiative and seeking to build political consensus, it is expected that the presiding officer would accept it. After a motion for impeachment is adopted by either House, the Speaker/ Chairman has to constitute a three-member committee of inquiry, headed by the Chief Justice of India or a Supreme Court judge, and including a Chief Justice of any High Court, and a person who is in the opinion of the Speaker/ Chairman, a 'distinguished jurist'. If the committee renders a guilty finding, the report of the committee is then adopted by the House in which it was introduced, and the judge's removal is debated. For an impeachment motion against an SC or HC judge to go through, at least two-thirds of those 'present and voting' in both Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha must vote in favour of removing the judge — and the number of votes in favour must be more than 50% of the 'total membership' of each House. If Parliament passes such a vote, the President will pass an order for the removal of the judge. Meanwhile, Opposition leaders said Parliament can dispense with the process of setting up a probe committee since the three-member committee appointed by then Chief Justice of India Sanjiv Khanna — comprising Justice Sheel Nagu, Chief Justice of the High Court of Punjab & Haryana; Justice G S Sandhawalia, Chief Justice of the High Court of Himachal Pradesh; and Justice Anu Sivaraman, Judge of the High Court of Karnataka — has already indicted Justice Varma. The Indian Express had reported on May 9 that then CJI Khanna had forwarded a copy of the inquiry report, along with a recommendation to initiate impeachment proceedings against the judge to President Droupadi Murmu and Prime Minister Modi. Justice Varma was asked to resign but he is learnt to have refused to do so. He was transferred out on March 20 and he took oath as judge at the Allahabad High Court on April 5, but has not been assigned work.
