Vehicle falls into river in Sikkim, Odisha BJP leader among 9 missing

A Bharatiya Janata Party leader from Odisha was among nine people reported missing in Sikkim after a tourist vehicle they were travelling in went off the road and fell into the Teesta River late Thursday (May 29, 2025) evening. The vehicle fell about 1,000 ft., at a place between Chungthang and Munshithang along the Chungthang-Lachen road in northern Sikkim's Mangan district. Two groups of tourists from Odisha and West Bengal reportedly hired the vehicle, which had 11 occupants, including the driver and Itishree Jena, the Odisha State secretary of the BJP Mahila Morcha. 'Out of the 11 occupants, two have been rescued and referred to STNM Hospital in Gangtok, after preliminary treatment at the Chungthang Field Hospital. Search is still on for the remaining nine persons,' an official statement said. 'Swimmers have been deployed to check for the vehicle wreck in the river. An extensive search operation is underway,' another statement read. Mangan's Superintendent of Police, Sonam Detchu Bhutia, said locals were helping rescue workers to find the missing passengers and recover the vehicle. 'We spotted a body in the middle of the river near a rock, but we have not been able to reach the spot because the river is swollen and its current is very strong. The terrain is too steep for recovery vehicles to reach,' he told The Hindu. While he confirmed that Ms. Jena's name was on the list of passengers, he said, 'We cannot confirm her identity unless she is rescued or the body is recovered.' Her brother, Sisir Nayak, confirmed that she was one of four individuals from Odisha still missing in northern Sikkim's Mangan. He also said her son and nephew were currently on ventilators. 'In response to the accident, Odisha Chief Minister Mohan Majhi dispatched a special team to Sikkim. This team's mission is to oversee and aid rescue operations, ensure the injured receive appropriate medical attention, and facilitate their safe return,' a Bhubaneswar-based BJP leader said.

300th birth anniversary of Ahilyabai Holkar celebrated

The 300th birth anniversary of Ahilyabai Holkar, who ruled over Malwa territory within the Maratha Confederacy from 1767 to 1795 – was celebrated by the BJP Mahila Morcha here on Wednesday. The party's Mahila Morcha president C. Manjula, highlighted the enduring legacy of the 18th century ruler and described her as a role model for women's leadership and administration. Speaking at the event, Manjula praised Ahilyabai Holkar for her visionary leadership, stating that she invoked spiritual energy and administered the kingdom for 30 years with dedication and discipline and remains a role model for women in administration even in present times. Ms. Manjula spoke at length on the rejuvenation of major temples that was undertaken by Ahilyabai Holkar. ''She reinstalled and consecrated the Jyotirlinga at Somnath, Kashi, and other places, helped rebuild temples and other religious infrastructure across India'', said Ms. Manjula. Citing history, she said it was Ahilyabai Holkar who launched Maheshwari sarees which gave livelihood to artisans and weavers. Her initiatives and administrative measures ensured empowerment of women, and that is what constitutes Nari Shakti, said Ms. Manjula, who took a dig at Chief Minister Siddaramaiah's guarantee schemes. ''Ahilyabai Holkar empowered women while in the guise of helping the women, the Karnataka Government was making women dependent on freebies'', said She also touched upon the BJP's record on women's empowerment and said that Prime Minister Narendra Modi has introduced 33 per cent reservation for women in the Parliament. Besides, the women's self-help groups receive microfinance support from the Government without any collateral and women are being crowned as 'Lakhpati Didis''. The microfinance without entailing any collateral ranges from Rs.50,000 to over Rs.2 lakh and the turnover by enterprises run by women's self-help groups have crossed Rs.500 crore, said She said just as Ahilyabai Holkar should be a source of inspiration for women, the maharani of Mysuru Kempananjamani, who pledged family jewellery to fund the construction of the Krishnaraja Sagar dam, should also be eulogized. ''They are our real inspiration and role models and not those promoting reels and memes on social media'', said Ms. Manjula. Former MLA and BJP unit president L. Nagendra, among others were present.

FIR against BJP leader over social media post

Mangaluru: The registration of a police complaint against BJP Mahila Morcha state secretary and former city councillor Shwetha Poojary has stirred a political row in coastal Karnataka. The FIR follows a Facebook post in which Poojary questioned the role of authorities in the investigation into the murder of Hindu activist Suhas Shetty. Shetty was killed in Bajpe recently, and CCTV footage purportedly showing two burqa-clad women conversing with the accused near the crime scene had gone viral, prompting widespread speculation. Referring to this, Poojary in her social media post asked why the women had not been taken into custody and why District-in-Charge Minister Dinesh Gundu Rao had remained silent. The post led a Congress worker to file a complaint, prompting the police to book Poojary under Sections 192, 196, 353(1)(b), and 353(2) of the IPC, among others. The action has drawn criticism from right-wing organisations, who termed it an attempt to stifle dissent and questioned the government's commitment to freedom of expression. 'This is an effort to suppress those raising legitimate questions about the investigation,' said a BJP functionary who requested anonymity.P

BJP women's wing salutes soldiers for Op Sindoor

New Delhi: Women turned out in big numbers for BJP's Sindoor Yatra in central Delhi's Connaught Place on Monday to laud the armed forces' recent incursions into Pakistan and the destruction of terror camps there. Chief minister Rekha Gupta, former Union minister Smriti Irani, BJP MP Kamaljeet Sehrawat, and Delhi BJP president Virendra Sachdeva participated in the march organised by the BJP Mahila Morcha. The march was taken out amid heavy security. Songs such as 'Mera Rang De Basanti Chola' and 'Meri Jaan Tiranga Hai' played. " Operation Sindoor is our nation's symbol and commitment. It is not a mission but a message to terrorists that if you cast an evil eye at our daughters, the Indian armed forces are there to protect them. We bow down to those women whose husbands and sons are safeguarding our borders and ensuring our safety. We bow to the armed forces. Our Prime Minister took a vow that he won't let the country break or kowtow to anayone," Irani said. Gupta said that through Operation Sindoor, the armed forces had protected the dignity of women in this country. "The terrorists were given a befitting reply, and we bow in front of them (the soldiers). We thank them from the bottom of our hearts," she said. The forces carried out missile strikes early on May 7 at nine terror targets in Pakistan and Pakistan-Occupied Kashmir (PoK). The strikes, called Operation Sindoor, happened two weeks after the killing of 26 tourists in Pahalgam. Gupta said the Sindoor Yatra was far more than a ceremonial event. "It is a powerful and heartfelt tribute from the women of the nation to our armed forces." She said that through Operation Sindoor, India's brave soldiers have valiantly safeguarded the honour and pride of the country's daughters and sisters, an achievement that fills the entire nation with pride. "Under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, govt and armed forces launched a bold and decisive strike against terrorism in Pakistan, successfully dismantling every terrorist base," CM said. "On behalf of all the women of India, I offer my heartfelt gratitude to our armed forces," she said. Irani said Operation Sindoor was not just a campaign but a symbol of the nation's pride and commitment. "It sends a strong message to terrorists that whenever they look towards the women of this country, they will find the entire nation, Govt of India, and our armed forces standing in defence of every daughter and mother." She said the nation also bowed to PM Modi. "Today, India's army and the nation together have given a strong reply to Pakistan: we will not rest until every terrorist camp is destroyed," she said.
