Anwar urges good governance, strong oversight in AI to avoid past ‘piratisation' mistakes
CYBERJAYA, Aug 18 — Principles of good governance and proper oversight must be firmly embedded in the development of artificial intelligence (AI) to ensure Malaysia's digital transformation progresses effectively, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim said today. Anwar, who is also finance minister, said that while AI and emerging technologies present vast opportunities, they must be approached carefully to avoid outcomes that could harm the country. He also drew a comparison with the country's past privatisation efforts, noting how a lack of transparency and poor governance turned some initiatives into costly failures. 'At that time, it wasn't really 'privatisation' but more like 'piratisation' that bypassed proper processes. 'And what was the result? Many companies that were initially awarded projects with the hope of benefiting the country and the people ended up incurring major losses, which became significant national debts that the people had to bear. 'This is why, in all aspects of computerisation, digital transformation and AI development, the principle of good governance is essential,' he said at the Temu Anwar@Universiti Multimedia (MMU) programme and the launch of MMU Faculty of Artificial Intelligence and Engineering (FAIE) here today. — Bernama

Extension of Malaysian MotoGP contract hinges on data, says minister
PUTRAJAYA, Aug 18 — The decision on whether the Sepang International Circuit (SIC) will get the 'green light' from the government to extend its contract to host the Malaysian Motorcycle Grand Prix (MotoGP) race next year depends on the detailed data collection throughout its organisation. Youth and Sports Minister Hannah Yeoh said the holding of the prestigious race had indeed received quite an encouraging response but the SIC still needed to convince the Ministry of Finance that the return received would provide comprehensive benefits. 'All this requires data to convince the Ministry of Finance that there is a return on investment. When we invest, we are not signing only in terms of tourism. It should help support the economy and job opportunities for Malaysians. 'Like the MotoGP temporary job that can be generated every year, approximately 4,500. But we also want to have skills passed down to the people, so that's why data collection is important and SIC must ensure that all this is recorded to convince the Ministry of Finance that it is not a waste,' she said. She said this after officiating the Jalur Gemilang Handover Ceremony for the national contingent to the 2025 South-east Asian (SEA) Deaf Games here today. Yesterday, the media reported that SIC is currently in the process of negotiating with Dorna Sports (the rights holder for organising the MotoGP) to renew the Malaysian GP contract which will expire in 2026. Meanwhile, Hannah has high hopes for the national badminton athletes to perform excellently at the World Championships in Paris which will be held from August 25 to 31. 'I am confident that our badminton players can perform well, especially those under the Road To Gold (RTG) Programme, but I also hope that the players are not too tired because we know that the badminton calendar is very tight, compact. 'In any case, they need to continue playing to be in the RTG and I always pray that there will be no injuries to our athletes because that will make it difficult for many parties,' she said. Among the badminton athletes in the RTG are Aaron Chia-Soh Wooi Yik, Goh Sze Fei-Nur Izzuddin Rumsani, Man Wei Chong-Tee Kai Wun, Pearly Chen Tang Jie-Toh Ee Wei and Goh Soon Huat-Shevon Lai Jemie. Earlier, a total of 80 athletes took on the country's challenge at the SEA Deaf Games in Jakarta, which is only 20 people less than the largest contingent, Indonesia which is fielding 100 athletes as host. In total, the Malaysian contingent includes 53 athletes and 27 officials who will compete in six sports events namely futsal, athletics, badminton, tenpin bowling, chess and table tennis. — Bernama

FGV trading halted Aug 25 as Felda's takeover seals delisting
KUALA LUMPUR: FGV Holdings Bhd will be suspended from trading on Bursa Malaysia's Main Market at 9am on Aug 25, marking the final step towards its privatisation following the Federal Land Development Authority's (Felda) successful takeover bid. In a filing to the bourse today, FGV said Felda's mandatory offer closed on Aug 15 with acceptances for 3.46 billion shares, giving the authority a dominant 94.97 per cent stake in the plantation group. Having crossed the 90 per cent threshold on July 29, FGV is now set to be delisted after more than a decade on the exchange. The bid was spearheaded by Felda's wholly owned unit, Felda Asset Holdings Company Sdn Bhd, alongside the Pahang state government and other parties acting in concert (PACs), including Koperasi Kakitangan Felda Malaysia Bhd (Felkop) and individuals linked to Felda management. Launched on May 26 at RM1.30 per share — the same price as its failed 2020 attempt — the offer fell below an independent adviser's valuation of RM1.83 to RM1.99 per share. Felda proceeded after Bursa Malaysia rejected FGV's proposal in March to resolve its low public shareholding, which had remained under the 25 per cent threshold since February 2021. FGV, once hailed as a corporate giant, raised RM10.5 billion in its 2012 initial public offering (IPO) at RM4.55 per share, ranking among the world's largest listings that year. Since then, the stock has shed nearly two-thirds of its value. At 12.30pm on Monday, FGV shares were unchanged at RM1.30, valuing the group at RM4.74 billion — a sharp contrast to its IPO valuation.
