Olympic champion Keely Hodgkinson has triumphed with a world-leading 800m time in Chorzow, Poland, advancing towards the Tokyo World Championships.
Olympic champion Keely Hodgkinson made a triumphant return to action on Saturday, August 16, running a world-leading time in her first 800m since winning gold at the Paris Games last year.
The 23-year-old Briton showed no signs of the hamstring problems that had sidelined her for months, clocking a meet record of 1min 54.74sec in the hot and humid conditions of Chorzow, Poland.
'That was so much fun. The track here is very fast," said Hodgkinson, who described her comeback race at the Silesia Diamond League meet as a vital 'stepping stone" to the September 13-21 world championships in Tokyo.
'It's amazing, I wanted this opportunity. I don't have much time to prepare for the worlds, so I had to put something down," she added.
Dutch pacemaker Lisanne de Witte set the rhythm, aiming for a 1:54.50 race, and Hodgkinson led the chasing pack through 400m in 56.09sec.
Chased by Kenya's Liliane Odira, Hodgkinson looked comfortable as she pulled away solo for the final 300 metres, pushing herself down the home straight for a fine win.
The victory marks the end of a long road back from injury for Hodgkinson.
She was forced to withdraw from an event in February that bore her name, the Keely Klassic, where she intended to make a tilt at the long-standing world indoor 800m world record.
Hodgkinson then pulled out of last month's Diamond League meet in London.
'I wanted to open my season today, I was ready and it worked," beamed Hodgkinson.
'I was just happy to step on the track after more than a year. As I got closer to the race, I got more and more relaxed. I enjoyed the feeling of the race.
'I planned to run a fast time because I do not have five races anymore before Tokyo, I only have today and the meeting in Lausanne. So it had to be fast and I am happy that it worked."
She is expected to go head-to-head with training partner Georgia Hunter Bell, the Olympic 1500m bronze medallist, over 800m at the Lausanne Diamond League next week.

Marc Marquez Wins Austrian MotoGP, Claims Sixth Victory In A Row

Marc Marquez won his first race at the Red Bull Ring in the Austrian MotoGP, his ninth win of the season. Starting fourth, he overtook Marco Bezzecchi and held off Fermin Aldeguer. Marc Marquez was thrilled to secure his first-ever victory at the Red Bull Ring, triumphing in the Austrian MotoGP on Sunday. This win marks his ninth of the season and further extends his lead in the championship standings. Starting fourth on the grid, the Ducati rider overtook pole-sitter Marco Bezzecchi on lap 20 and maintained his lead to achieve his sixth consecutive win. Rookie Fermin Aldeguer closed in during the final laps but settled for second, marking the best result of his career, while Bezzecchi finished third. 'Yes, super, super happy to finally take the first victory here in Austria, I'm wearing the red bike (Ducati) and it was working super good," said Marquez. Victory in the 1000th MotoGP race rounded off a perfect weekend for the Spaniard, who, despite a poor qualifying session that saw him slide off the track, also won his 12th sprint of the season on Saturday. The 32-year-old is now one step closer to a seventh world title, his first since 2019. After 13 rounds of the 22-race season, Marquez leads the standings by 142 points ahead of his brother Alex Marquez (Ducati-Gresini). Marc Marquez made an impressive start, overtaking his brother in the first turn and teammate Francesco Bagnaia, unbeaten at this venue since 2022, on the second lap. This set up a tense battle with Bezzecchi (Aprilia), which Marquez resolved with a decisive move eight laps from the end. Bezzecchi was then overtaken by the rapidly approaching Aldeguer (BK8 Gresini), who briefly challenged Marquez for the win before settling for second place. 'In the first part he (Bezzecchi) was super strong but then I just waited," Marquez explained. 'I tried in the beginning but it was too risky, I preferred to wait and attack near the end. But a new outsider arrived and it was Aldeguer this time and he was arriving super fast. But yes, I'm very happy for six victories in a row." Alex Marquez, despite starting second, was unlikely to win due to a long-lap penalty for an incident involving Honda's Joan Mir in the Czech MotoGP. He served the penalty on lap three, dropping from fourth to 11th and eventually finishing 10th. Reigning champion Jorge Martin's difficult season continued as he crashed out on turn 7 on lap 15, finishing last. The Spaniard, who has confirmed he will remain with Aprilia next season, missed the first three races due to pre-season crashes. After returning in Qatar in April, he suffered another heavy crash and missed the next seven races, only making his comeback in the last round in Brno. The championship continues next weekend in Hungary. view comments First Published: Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's. Please keep discussions respectful and constructive. PBKS Star Set To Return For Asia Cup 2025, Yashasvi Jaiswal & Shubman Gill Unlikely: Report

Last Updated: The 30-year-old right-handed batter played 17 matches in IPL 2025 and scored 604 runs for the Mohali-based franchise. India's Test captain Shubman Gill and star opening batter Yashasvi Jaiswal are unlikely to be part of India's Asia Cup 2025 squad, but Punjab Kings captain Shreyas Iyer will be picked for the premier continental event. According to a report in Sportstar on Sunday (August 17), Iyer, who last played a T20I match for India in Bengaluru on December 3, 2023, against Australia, will be included as a middle-order batter. In his last white-ball tournament for India, which was in the Champions Trophy 2025, Iyer played five matches in Dubai and scored 243 runs to finish as India's highest run getter. The 2025 edition of the Asia Cup is also scheduled to take place in Dubai and Abu Dhabi from September 9 to 28. It has been reported that 'selectors and team management are aligned on including an experienced middle-order batter suited to the slower, lower conditions expected in the UAE. If Shreyas is picked, it could mean a tough call on either Shivam Dube or Rinku Singh, both of whom were part of India's last T20I assignment, against England in January." Iyer, who leads Punjab Kings in the IPL and scored 604 runs in IPL 2025, has 1104 runs to his credit in 51 T20Is played so far. It has also been reported that RCB wicketkeeper-batter Jitesh Sharma will be Sanju Samson's deputy for the Asia Cup 2025. Jitesh last played a T20I match for India on January 14, 2024, in Indore against Afghanistan. Gill and Jaiswal last played a T20I match for India on July 30, 2024, against Sri Lanka in Pallekele. The duo was in red-hot form in the IPL 2025 and deserves a place in India's T20I squad by form and merit, but the players in the current T20I setup – Samson, Abhishek Sharma and Tilak Varma – haven't performed badly either, and to drop them to bring Gill and Jaiswal back makes little sense. As per Sportstar, 'The management appears inclined to stick with the core group that has excelled under Gambhir, winning 13 of 15 T20Is since his appointment." 'Additionally, with minimal turnaround time between formats—the Asia Cup final is on September 28, and the first Test against the West Indies begins on October 2 in Ahmedabad—the selectors are likely to keep Gill and Jaiswal fresh for the red-ball assignments." view comments First Published: Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's.
