Spire Motorsports among the surprises of NASCAR season so far with Talladega up next

Despite five finishes of 30th or worst in the first eight races of the season, Carson Hocevar has avoided getting caught up in the dismal results.
It's the encouraging performance of his No. 77 Chevrolet that has the 22-year-old from Portage, Michigan, believing his team is emerging as a force in NASCAR's premier Cup Series.
'Our group is so strong,' said Hocevar, who is in his second full Cup season. 'We're so good on pit road. We're good on the racetrack. We just got to be able to take advantage of the adversity. As my dad would remind me when I was a kid racing, they are character-building moments.'
Despite the disappointments, Hocevar still is part of the best start in the six-year history of Spire Motorsports, one of the season's major surprises.
At Las Vegas Motor Speedway, Michael McDowell (a two-time Cup winner hired for 2025 by Spire) delivered the first pole in team history. Hocevar finished a career-best second at Atlanta Motor Speedway
Spire, which has yet to finish a season in the top 20 of the championship standings, has its three cars ranked between 19th and 25th in points after overhauling its roster with a host of championship veterans.
Rodney Childers, who guided Kevin Harvick to the 2014 championship and earned 40 wins as a crew chief, joined the No. 7 of Justin Haley. Dax Gerringer, formerly a lead engineer for Childers at Stewart-Haas Racing, was hired as Spire's technical director. Matt McCall, a four-time winner as a Cup crew chief, was added as director of vehicle performance.
'A lot of the impact on our program is the unsung heroes,' Hocevar said before finishing 11th and leading two laps (despite a pit stop miscue) in the April 13 race at Bristol Motor Speedway. 'It's Matt McCall, Dax and a handful of others in the competition space.'
Their mettle will be tested as Bristol marked the quarter-pole of a 36-race season that gets only more grueling.
Emerging from the Easter off-weekend, the Cup Series will return Sunday at Talladega Superspeedway for a stretch of racing on 28 consecutive weeks through the Nov. 2 season finale at Phoenix Raceway.
Denny Hamlin, who has been another 2025 surprise in ending a long winless drought with new crew chief Chris Gayle, said he understands the reason for the marathon but fears the stress.
'There is always a breaking point,' he said. 'It is harder and harder to keep people over the years. It is just generally a hard sport to be a part of because of the schedule. It is certainly not ideal.'
Here are some other surprises, good and bad, from the season so far:
Penske pain
In three championships from 2022-24, Team Penske developed a title blueprint of playing possum in the regular season before reeling off hot playoff runs by Joey Logano and Ryan Blaney.
The lack of early results from Penske's trio of drivers is befuddling this season.
Logano needed seven races before his first top 10 finish, the longest stretch for a defending Cup series champion. Blaney has led five races in his No. 12 Ford but averaged a finish of 16.7 because of mechanical failures, mediocre pit stops and crash misfortune. Austin Cindric could have won the first two races at Daytonaand Atlanta but twice got wrecked.
'Last year, we didn't run very good and then we were able to fabricate a finish somehow,' Logano said. 'This year has kind of been the opposite. You name it, and it has happened. The fact that we have speed gives me a lot of confidence that a win will be around the corner at some point.'
23XI Racing's rise
After his debut in the championship field, Tyler Reddick keeps gathering steam with top-three rankings in NASCAR's passing, defense and speed categories. Teammate Bubba Wallace, who missed the playoffs last year, has shown major gains on restarts (ranking third in the series with his No. 23 Toyota).
In its fifth year, the team co-owned by Hamlin and NBA legend Michael Jordan is on target for qualifying two title contenders despite the distractions of facing off with NASCAR in federal court for an antitrust battle that could drag through the year.
Keselowski's swoon
The preseason optimism was high for Brad Keselowski. He ended a 110-race winless streak last year and was reunited for 2025 with crew chief Jeremy Bullins, who took Keselowski to his most recent championship round appearance in 2020.
But it's been a wipeout for the No. 6 Ford driver, whose best finish is 11th. The 2012 Cup champion is ranked 31st in the standings and is off to the worst start of his 16-season career. At 41, the driver-owner of Roush Fenway Keselowski Racing could face career decisions if the trajectory continues.

Former captain Zdeno Chara, in first year of eligibility, joins long list of Bruins greats in the Hockey Hall of Fame

The son of an Olympic Greco-Roman wrestler, the Slovak-born Chara went from the near-anonymity of being an Islanders third-pound pick in 1996, to crafting an illustrious, oft-intimidating career in which he also amassed 2,085 penalty minutes. Though he preferred not to fight, in part because it played into a stereotype that he felt diminished his talents, he was a frightening force amid the battle, easily overwhelming opponents with his long reach, wrestler's iron clenches, and a heavyweight's punches. Get Starting Point A guide through the most important stories of the morning, delivered Monday through Friday. Enter Email Sign Up 'Bruins fans will love him,' offered his agent, Matt Keator, the day his client signed in Boston as a free agent in July 2006. 'He's a killing machine.' Advertisement That intimidation factor indeed played heavily in Chara's favor, and served as protection for the entire bench. But he was much more than a strongman. He was a powerful, durable, and prolific force throughout his career, his longest run with the Bruins, spanning 14 seasons and 1,023 regular-season games, as well as 150 more in the postseason, when he helped lead the Bruins three times to the Cup Final. Advertisement In the spring of 2011, the first of those trips to the Cup Final, the Bruins won what today stands as their lone title over the last 53 years. An exhausted Chara eagerly collected the Cup from NHL commissioner Gary Bettman near center ice that night in Vancouver and, standing a full 7 feet on skates, the bearded behemoth shook the shiny mug high over his head with such a vigor that he all but poked a hole in the roof of Rogers Arena. 'It's a huge honor,' Chara said on the ice that night 14 years ago. 'I'm so humbled to be in this position. It was so hard, such a long road, such a grind. I'm so happy for everyone to be able to cherish this moment. I will never forget this.' As a kid in Trencin, where coaches often insisted he was better suited for basketball, a frustrated Chara was repeatedly cut from his amateur hockey teams or denied promotion to better squads. When drafted by the Islanders, basically as a curiosity, he had but his size, strength, and fearsome fighting skills as his potential ticket to an NHL career. In a league trending more to skill than power and strength, his odds of making it appeared slim. Yet Chara opted to move (technically defect) to North America — eschewing Slovakia's mandatory military service — and stuffed all of his belongings into one suitcase as he made his way on a flight out of Bratislava to western Canada, at the invite of the WHL Prince George Cougars. It all could have ended there, before it even started. Advertisement 'I wasn't going back,' Chara recalled years later, explaining why he had brought so little with him on his journey. 'I had big hope.' By Nov. 19, 1997, barely more than a year since leaving his homeland, he slipped into the lineup of the Rick Bowness-coached Islanders, logging 7:03 of ice time in a 3-2 win at Detroit. Almost 25 years later, he skated in his final game, April 29, 2022, scoring a goal (No. 209) for the Islanders in a 6-4 loss to the Lightning in Elmont, N.Y. What carried him through all of it was a near-mythical off-ice training and nutrition regimen that Chara began to craft in his teens under the watch of his father Zdenek. By his father's telling, his son sat down with him one day at the kitchen table for a lesson in visual and life arts. Dad drew a train, noting his son that day was in the last car. Listen to me and train with me, dedicate yourself to hard work, his father said, and you'll move up and one day drive the train. 'But get off,' he told his son, pointing to the drawing on the kitchen table, 'and the train leaves.' Zdeno remained aboard for the full ride, training not at a state-of-the art gym or nearby fitness club, but in the family's backyard. There was yardwork to do, mowing and weeding and gardening. Zdeno did all of it, while routinely stopping, per his father's direction, in basic workout stations his father created among the trees and flower beds. Advertisement 'Obstacle courses around the garden, and I was grateful for it,' Chara said recently. 'Every time I went by and was watering the garden, or raking, or cutting grass, mowing the lawn, whatever we were doing, I was doing pushups or pullups or dips or squats. It adds up. You wouldn't believe it, at end of the day. You wouldn't feel like you did, I know how many, 50 or 70 or 80 pullups. But by end of day, you're like, 'My God, I did all that?!' Over time, day by day, it becomes a habit, part of your routine. It becomes part of you and you feel good because you see the improvement, how you are getting stronger, more comfortable, and you can tolerate more and more. On top of it all, you just become more proud and self-aware that, 'Hey, I am doing what I can with what we have,' and you are getting better.' Chara, his No. 33 one day to be hoisted to the Garden rafters, joins a legendary group of Bruins defensemen, including Eddie Shore, Bobby Orr, Ray Bourque, and Brad Park, to be named to the Hall of Fame. He is the 58th member of the Bruins, be it as player or builder, to be named to the Hall. The train kept rolling, Zdeno Chara remained aboard, moving forward in the cars, and on Tuesday the journey of some 35 years and 4,200 miles came to an end at the Hockey Hall of Fame station in Toronto. ‘That Honda Fit Sounds Like the One:' Used Car Salesman Picks His Top 6 Vehicles Under $4,000. But How Reliable Are They?

You're broke. It's hot. Uber is expensive. Your current ride smells like despair and ketchup packets. But you can't afford a new car, so you have no choice but to climb into the cloud of rancid french fry grease and hit the road. Or is there another way? Used car dealer Kellen Lake (@kellenlake) says that you actually can afford a new vehicle. You don't need a loan, either, Lake says: You need a Toyota Camry with 200,000 miles. While walking the grounds of a North Carolina-based used car dealership, Lake offers viewers some low-budget options from Chevrolet, Toyota, and Volvo that can be purchased for less than $4,000. A cheeky text overlay on his post says, 'Cars under $4K that'll outlive your last relationship.' Lake points at a 2008 Chevrolet Impala with 65 service records, joking, 'That's more maintenance than your ex got in therapy. No accidents. Just pure vibes." Lake describes a gold Volvo XC70 thusly: 'If IKEA made tanks, this would be it.' He says a 2007 Honda Fit with 53 service records 'sips gas like your aunt sips boxed wine: Cheap and consistent.' With new car prices averaging over $47,000 and even older used vehicles fetching record highs post-COVID, the idea of a reliable beater has gone from punchline to holy grail. According to Lake, you don't have to break the bank to get a reliable used car on the cheap. You just need to do your homework. It Backfires 'Making It Personal:' Man Buys 'Lemon' Ford F-150 From Used Car Dealership. Then He Decides to Get a Custom Wrap and Warn Buyers Lake told Motor1 over the phone that he used to run a personal training studio and make daily videos about fitness. Now that he sells used cars, the subject matter has changed, but the strategy hasn't: make people laugh, teach them something useful, and earn their trust before you try to make a deal. 'It's not about making a quick sale,' he said. 'It's about building trust. If they know, like, and trust you, they'll come to you when they're ready.' Now the general manager at New Era Motors in Winston-Salem and a co-owner of Oak Auto NC in Kernersville, North Carolina, he still treats content like a long game. Every video—whether it's a rundown of sub-$4,000 cars or a walkaround of a recent auction pickup—is part of a larger effort to build a brand people actually believe in. 'I'm never going to say I post a video and something sells the next day,' he said. 'Has that happened? Sure. But that's only because I've been posting organic content every day since 2017.' What He's Actually Selling—and Why It Matters The cars in Lake's viral TikTok aren't sleek. They're not rare. And they're definitely not going to make anyone jealous at a stoplight. But they'll get you from point A to point B. The Toyota Camry is well-known for being a reliable vehicle, even with high mileage. The same is true of the 2007 Honda Fit . The Volvo XC70 has purportedly had some lesser years, but is also generally considered a dependable vehicle. Some 2008 Chevy Impala owners have complained about its reliability, but overall, it has a rather high rating of 4.5 out of 5 stars in this category on Kelley Blue Book . The Hyundai Sonata Lake highlights is also generally seen as a reliable vehicle, though there have been complaints about engine seizing, and some years are considered lesser than others. Subaru Foresters have been described as somewhat more "finicky" than the straightforward Honda or Toyota, but the brand is also widely known for its reliability. All the cars Lake highlights in the post share the same profile: Under $4,000, clean titles, long service histories, and a reputation for being mechanically sound, even if they're visually uninspiring. For Lake, that's a feature, not a bug 'Not exciting, but neither is walking,' he jokes in the TikTok. Buying Advice When asked what advice he'd give someone looking for a vehicle under $4,000, Lake doesn't hesitate. 'First, check the tires. Then the trunk. Then pop the hood and look for stop leak,' he said of a fix for minor leaks in gaskets, seals, or radiators. He says that before buying, you should also look at: Coolant reservoir—look for white gunk or a blackened reservoir, as both suggest engine wear or quick-fix additives like stop leak; Check the oil—low levels, moisture, or signs of neglect are red flags; and Look under the hood—moisture around the engine might indicate head gasket problems. He emphasizes that buyers should still test drive the vehicle and get a feel for how it sounds and handles. But more than anything, he values service records, noting that older cars with 40 or more service records show some real care was taken. Then comes his secret weapon: An OBD-II scanner. 'They're cheap. Plug it in, get the codes, and then copy/paste them into ChatGPT,' he says. He recommends asking the artificial intelligence to provide repair scenarios, cost ranges, and parts estimates based on the vehicle's year and make. 'It gives you a really good idea of what you're possibly getting into,' Lake says. More From Motor1 'Not Having Wireless CarPlay in a $30K Car Is Kinda Crazy,' Says Honda Civic Driver.
