Man killed in Dublin truck crash while walking to work named by heartbroken pals

A man who was killed after being hit by a truck while walking to work in Dublin last week was a Brazilian national 'in search of a better life' in Ireland.
The victim, named locally as Romulo Cerasuolo, 34, was heading to work when the fatal collision took place on Ballyboden Way last Friday morning. He was tragically pronounced dead at the scene just after 8.30am.
Now, a fundraiser has been set up on GoFundMe by pals of Mr Cerasuolo to help return his remains back to his family in Brazil, called 'Romulo Cerasuolo -Help us get him back home.' So far €12,245 has been raised by 648 donors.
The Brazilian community in Dublin are pleading for funding support in a bid to help Mr Cerasuolo's family to cover the cost to "transfer of his body to his homeland".
They wrote: "Romulo was hit by a lorry on Ballyboden Way, Dublin 16, and sadly died on the spot. The news shocked the entire community, especially those who lived with him and knew his dedication, discretion and generous heart.
"Romulo came to Ireland in search of a better life, like so many of us. He worked hard, lived simply and always remained firm in his commitment to his family in Brazil, who are now facing not only the immense pain of his loss, but also the difficulty of paying for the transfer of his body to his homeland."
"That's why we've set up this fundraiser. Our aim is to help his family take Romulo back home, so that he can have a dignified burial, surrounded by the love of those who saw him born,' they continued.
"The amount needed for the transfer is high - so every donation, no matter how small, will make a big difference."
Mr Cerasuolo's local community is now coming together in an effort to cover the cost of his repatriation. For more information or to donate to the fundraiser, click here.
Gardai continue to appeal for witnesses to the fatal collision and have asked anyone who may have witnessed the collision or who may have relevant footage of the area at the time to come forward.
In a statement, a Garda spokesperson said: "Gardai are appealing to anyone who may have witnessed this collision to contact them.
"Any road users who may have camera footage (including dash-cam) and were travelling in the area between 8:00am and 9:00am this morning are asked to make this footage available to investigating Gardai.
"Anyone with information is asked to contact Rathfarnham Garda Station on 01 666 6500, the Garda Confidential Line on 1800 666 111, or any Garda station."

Major update on suspected Jihadi arrested over fire attack on Conor McGregor pub

A suspected Islamic extremist is back in prison this evening after gardai investigating an arson attack on a pub owned by Conor McGregor released him without charge. The Mirror has confirmed that the suspected Jihadi was returned to prison on Saturday evening – 24 hours after his arrest. The man was arrested on Friday by detectives from the Garda's main anti-terror outfit the Special Detective Unit, or SDU, as part of the investigation into the July 25 arson attack on Mr McGregor's Black Forge Inn in south Dublin. Flammable liquid was poured at the entrance of the €2million pub before being set on fire. Emergency services quickly extinguished the blaze and nobody was hurt. Gardai have been investigating the incident ever since and made their move against the suspect on Friday He was taken out of a prison in Leinster that afternoon on a so-called section 42 warrant – a required judicial approval to take an inmate out of jail. Gardai have confirmed to The Mirror that the suspect was released without charge on Saturday evening – but the force added that investigations were continuing. A spokesman told us: 'The individual was released without charge on Saturday evening. Investigations are ongoing.' The investigation into the July 25 attack in Walkinstown, south Dublin was being led by gardai from Crumlin station – but the Mirror revealed on Saturday that the SDU was now leading the probe. The man is currently before the courts over an alleged serious assault – but we cannot identify that incident for legal reasons. But we can reveal that SDU are now involved in both investigations and are examining the theory that both were linked to Islamic extremism. The Black Forge Inn, Walkinstown. (Image: IDSLegacyArchive) The SDU is the Garda's main anti-terror squad – and is tasked with facing down Islamic extremist suspects here, as well as the more traditional role of tackling dissident republicans. Gardai confirmed the SDU arrested a man over the arson attack in a statement to the Mirror on Saturday morning. The statement said: 'Gardaí attached to An Garda Síochána's Special Detective Unit have arrested a male in connection with the investigation into Criminal Damage at a licensed premises in the South Dublin area on Friday, 25th of July 2025. 'The male, aged in his 20s, was arrested yesterday, 8th of August 2025 and remains detained at a Garda station in the Dublin region under Section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act 1984. 'An Garda Síochána has no further comment at this time.' On Sunday, Mr McGregor, who says he is planning to run for president in the elections later this year, posted an image on X of the Mirror's Saturday story that broke news of the suspected extremist's arrest - and said he had helped gardai identify the man within hours of the attack. 'Ireland, as your President, all radical, extremist ideologies will be swiftly dealt with. I will leave no stone unturned in ensuring the peace, safety, and prosperity of our citizens! 'Your land secured. Your wealth secured. Your future secured. 'We located this violent perpetrator within hours alongside An Garda Síochana who have now sent their file to the DPP! Call for stronger policing response after attacks on Indian citizens

The Minister of State for Migration has called for a stronger policing response, in the wake of a series of attacks on members of the Indian community. There have been several assaults and incidents of racism reported by Indian people in Ireland, prompting the Indian Embassy to issue a warning to its citizens living and working in Ireland. More than 100 people took part in a silent protest by members of the Indian community in Ireland at the Department of Justice last month. Colm Brophy said that the attacks were appalling, adding that he hoped that the incoming Garda Commissioner would prioritise the matter. "We actually have seen a drop in serious crime, but in this particular area, we have seen a rise in the type of attacks," he said. "I think there needs to be a stronger policing response in this area." Asked about reports that some of the attacks were being carried out by teenagers, Minister Brophy said he did believe young people could be punished in a "meaningful way" and pointed to recent legislation on hate crime which carries heavier sentences. Speaking on RTÉ's This Week programme, Minister Brophy said communities needed to come together to understand that it is not acceptable to have these attacks taking place. He said there needed to be a proactive response, similar to those in relation to organised crime and that gardaí were doing an excellent job investigating crimes, but he said he wanted clarity that resources would be deployed to deal with the rise in attacks on minorities. Asked why no action was being taken against social media companies who allowed images of attacks to remain on their platforms, Minister Brophy said they would work with the firms to clamp down on this. "There is a combined need…to look again and see how we can work with social media companies to clamp down on this," he said. "I don't think it is acceptable that social media companies, some of them, using ridiculous guises of free speech, etc, have not been willing to participate in a way that I believe they should clamp down on this." He said the first thing to do was to get companies to agree to participate and engage with Government on the issue. Colm Brophy also denied that a crackdown on immigration was emboldening people who might attack migrants. to discuss the incidents.
