SAG-AFTRA National Board Approves Commercials Contracts That Prevent AI, Digital Replicas Without Consent
The SAG-AFTRA National Board approved the 2025 Commercials Contracts on Sunday in a deal that the negotiating committee says is worth $218.4 million in increased earnings and benefit plan contributions over the next three years.
If ratified, the contracts would prevent performers' data and likeness from being used to train AI without consent, one-year streaming use fees would increase up to 33.33% and paid YouTube.com use would get a 12% increase over current Traditional Digital rates. Additionally, the agreements would see compounded increases in compensation at a rate of 5% in year one, 4% in year two and 3% in year three.
'A huge congratulations goes out to the commercials contracts negotiating committee for their diligent work in this agreement which is an important step forward for protecting the stability of performers' livelihoods during this time of major technological upheavals in the ad industry,' SAG-AFTRA president Fran Drescher said in a Sunday statement.' The committee was co-chaired by Katie Von Till and Erin Fritch who led with strength, wisdom, intellect and patience. Brava ladies! The commercials contracts are a real powerhouse when it comes to addressing tech with more AI protections than any contract so far! Well done!'
'This deal, hard-won thanks to an incredibly dedicated negotiating committee, achieves real wage growth and puts rules and a price tag on digital replica use — essential progress for a changing industry. I'm thrilled the National Board has approved this forward-thinking agreement and that members will now have a chance to review its many gains,' SAG-AFTRA national executive director and chief negotiator Duncan Crabtree-Ireland added. 'I also want to extend my deepest appreciation to our extraordinary and courageous negotiating committee, especially co-chairs Erin Fritch and Katie Von Till, and the best co-lead negotiator anyone could ask for, SAG-AFTRA chief contracts officer Ray Rodriguez.'
Other tentative details from the deal include pension and health contribution rates raising from 20.5% to 23.5%, more forward disability accommodation, better protections for minor performers, first-day per diems, wage increases for singers' demos that don't air and 25% more for dancers who are asked to lip sync.
Ratification votes are now due by 5 p.m. PT on May 2.

SAG-AFTRA has suspended its strike against ten game studios. The organization's national board will meet tomorrow to consider a tentative agreement with the developers; more details of the arrangement will be disclosed if and when the board agrees to the terms. Variety obtained a statement from a spokesperson for the gaming companies that offered some hints about the contents of the potential deal: "This agreement builds on three decades of successful partnership between the interactive entertainment industry and the union. It delivers historic wage increases of over 24 percent for performers, enhanced health and safety protections, and industry-leading AI provisions requiring transparency, consent and compensation for the use of digital replicas in games." It's been almost a year since the performers' union called a strike against the companies participating in the Interactive Media Agreement. The move was part of an effort to secure protections for its members regarding AI-generated likenesses of their voices and bodies in the gaming industry. The studios signatory to the IMA are: Activision Productions Inc. Blindlight LLC Disney Character Voices Inc. Electronic Arts Productions Inc. Formosa Interactive LLC Insomniac Games Inc. Llama Productions LLC Take 2 Productions Inc. VoiceWorks Productions Inc. WB Games Inc. In addition to the negotiations with the IMA businesses, SAG-AFTRA recently took action against Epic Games for its use of an AI-generated voice for Darth Vader in Fortnite .

Reality star's real estate company locks hundreds of North Texans into controversial contracts
What does a self-proclaimed reality show villain know about real estate? Apparently, quite a bit. The CBS News Texas I-Team found one star's success has locked hundreds of North Texans into contracts that will end up costing them thousands of dollars, and it's all legal. The company, MV Realty, marketed its "homeowner benefit agreement" to people across the country. Homeowners could get up to $5,000 up front for agreeing to use MV Realty as their agent when or if they decided to sell their home. Unconventional contracts The contract has some unconventional terms: It lasts 40 years, and if the homeowner dies, it is passed to their heirs. Breaking the contract involves paying a hefty termination fee, equal to roughly 3% of the home's value. The company can prevent homeowners from selling or refinancing by filing a memorandum against the property. The memorandum is not technically a lien, but it has the same effect as one, according to real estate attorney Jennifer Nachtigal. "Texas' Constitution has strong protections for the homestead, and they don't allow certain liens to be filed against the homestead," Nachtigal said. "Even if they're voluntary, even if the homeowner signed the lien themselves." But, she said, a memorandum can have the same chilling effect on any real estate deal because it raises questions of a possible lien. The I-Team searched real estate records and found MV Realty has filed memorandums against more than 500 properties across DFW, with more than 1,200 in all of Texas. Dozens of homeowners have complained to the Attorney General's Office. While Texas has yet to take any action, 11 other states are suing MV Realty for unfair or deceptive practices. "Big Brother" villain launches real estate company It's a lot of legal drama, but the company's founder has said she is used to being a villain. Amanda Zachman, a real estate agent, made a name for herself as a confrontational houseguest on season 15 of the CBS reality show "Big Brother," which aired in 2013. After losing the competition, she returned to her home in Florida and founded MV Realty. The company appeared to focus on Texas in 2022, when most of the agreements were signed. Tanya Shaw said the company approached her that year, and since she had no plans to move, she felt safe signing the agreement for a payment of about $1,000. The next year, after a family emergency, Shaw and her husband needed to refinance but couldn't because of the memorandum filed against the property. That's when she decided she had to sell. The contract allows MV Realty six months to get the home under contract, but Shaw said she needed to move faster. At that point, she hired another real estate agent, which was against the rules of the contract. When the home was sold, Shaw had to pay MV Realty about $11,000 on top of the buyer and seller agent fees. "I felt stupid," Shaw said. "Because even though desperate times call for desperate measures... I could have kept my home if I was able to refi." In Glenn Heights, John and Barbara Reliford are still trying to figure out how MV Realty entered into an agreement with John's mother; she had dementia, he said, and he was her power of attorney. Still, she somehow signed the contract without his knowledge. According to the contract, MV Realty paid his mother $687. If the Relifords sell, they will owe nearly $9,000. "There's no way my mother read through all of this and understood what she was doing," Reliford said. MV Realty files for bankruptcy Neither Zachman nor MV Realty responded to calls and emails from the CBS News Texas I-Team. The company filed for bankruptcy in September 2023. In a bankruptcy hearing, MV Realty said it no longer offers homeowner benefit agreements, but estimated it had 38,000 properties under contract nationwide. In the last two years, 22 states have passed laws against this type of real estate fee agreement. This year, two Texas lawmakers filed legislation to do the same thing, but both bills died in committees. It is unclear what, if anything, the Texas attorney general's office is doing about MV Realty. The AG's office did not respond to questions from the I-Team.

Right. Or you need an earthquake or something—everyone will get really close. I always say that a common enemy doesn't have to be a person. It could be Mother Nature. It could be a long line. Your grandmother raised you, and she figures so prominently in your content that she's become a celebrity herself. I do get along with the elderly more. Kids and I butt heads a lot. They don't like me. I've met so many babies with my haircut, and they're like, Why does this baby get to walk around? Why does she get her own seat on an airplane? And I'm like, You have no idea. You have so many things ahead of you. Every rule, every law is for you. You are the future. People would email me asking to get my grandma in their films, because they needed a Taiwanese or Asian grandma. It was, like, 12-hour shoot days for a SAG [Screen Actors Guild union] production. There are rules for children for SAG. They can only work certain hours and they have to have a teacher on set. So I was like, surely there are labor rules for seniors there. There isn't. They're just considered 18 and older, so they'd be able to work my grandma the whole 12 hours without rest. I'm finding out that with elders, there isn't anything protecting them. In an article for Tokyo Weekender, you said you feel like you have a sixth sense about culture. Do you feel like it's nurture or nature that's made you such a keen observer? It's probably both. You do have to be curious about other people and how they live and think. I was born in Taiwan and then moved to Japan, and then I was moved to America abruptly. Not my choice, any of these things. So I had to adapt quickly and be able to read people. The first language I really heard in America was Spanish, because of my classmates. And then I had Russians in my class, a classmate from Turkey. I had to learn where that was. The Russian kids didn't speak English, and I didn't either, so we were like, Do we come up with a third language? Do we use our physicality? I'm a very physical performer. I use my eyes a lot. Sometimes I make a noise instead of a word. I think all of that developed from me trying to connect with all kinds of people from all kinds of places.
