Camel rearing can drive livestock growth, say officials

Express Tribune2 days ago

Camel milk, renowned for its rich nutrient profile and medicinal properties, has the potential to improve public health and significantly boost Pakistan's livestock exports, experts say.
Speaking on World Camel Day, observed annually on June 22, Dr Jamshaid Akhtar, Deputy Director of Livestock, emphasised the untapped potential of camels in Pakistan's semi-arid and arid regions.
He noted that camel milk contains insulin-like proteins, making it particularly beneficial for diabetic patients.
"Camel milk is a powerful natural remedy. It not only helps control diabetes but is increasingly in demand in the cosmetics industry due to its natural healing and moisturising properties," he said.
World Camel Day is celebrated on June 22 to raise awareness about the vital role camels play in desert ecosystems.
"This date was chosen symbolically as it marks the hottest and longest day of the year — a reminder of the camel's unmatched ability to survive extreme conditions," Dr Jamshaid explained.
"Camels are not just animals of the desert; they are lifelines in harsh climates."
Pakistan, he added, is home to some of the world's best camel breeds, which are well-adapted to local environmental conditions. He urged livestock farmers to explore camel rearing more seriously and consider the economic value of camel-based products such as milk, meat, and even bones.
"Increased production and value addition in camel products can help Pakistan earn substantial foreign exchange," he said.
"By promoting camel products both locally and internationally, we can carve out a unique identity for our country in the global livestock sector."
Dr Jamshaid also underscored the cultural and ecological significance of camels, which have historically served communities through transportation, food, and resilience against climatic adversity.
He called on local farmers to adopt scientific methods for efficient camel rearing, noting that modern practices could dramatically improve productivity.
"It's time we shift our perspective and recognise camels as a sustainable source of livelihood and a pillar of national economic growth," he concluded.

Amanda Holden wears a leggy two piece while Ashley Roberts opts for an edgy leather mini skirt as they leave Heart Radio

Amanda Holden put on a leggy display as she left work at Heart Radio in London on Tuesday. The presenter, 54, was followed closely by her co-host Ashley Roberts, 43, who looked edgy in an all leather outfit. Amanda wore a bright red co-ordinate consisting of a sleeveless button up top and matching tailored shorts. She topped off her look with a pair of strappy heels, a red handbag and oversized sunglasses. Meanwhile, Ashley teamed a leather mini skirt, which zipped up the front, with a sheer, black crop top. She layered over a matching longline blazer, a pair of chunky Prada loafers and slicked her hair back. Amanda has recently returned from a trip to Corfu, she dazzled in a series of stunning swimsuits, including a cut-out pink number and plunging peach costume. She was on the Greek island with Alan Carr, while filming their BBC renovation series. The duo have been living it up in Greece while filming their BBC renovation series, which has been renamed Amanda and Alan's Greek Job following their similar shows in Spain and Italy. Yet the pair managed to squeeze in time between building work to hit the pool, with the pair filming a funny video lip-syching to Jhené Aiko's song, Sing To Me. Amanda and Alan have been jetting back and forth to Greece to film their series, after the Heart Radio host criticised the series' name, their travel arrangements and suggested their next show should be shown on Netflix instead. The mother-of-two no doubt shocked bosses as she took a cheeky swipe at her show with the BBC and complained about 'urine soaked dressing room floors'. As they discussed the show on Alan's travel podcast, Alan recalled: 'Do you remember we had to wee in behind bins and sh*** like that? I'm dreading it.' Amanda recalled: 'I have a pile of clothes on me at the back. I've got all of Alan's shirts, like 15 dresses I'll change into, three hats lined up on the back.' She continued: 'And then we get out and I get changed in loos where there's like wee on the floor, beach huts. That's behind the scenes.' Alan added: 'But the thing is people don't understand there's no... The toilets aren't working when we get have to go and use someone's toilet or a portaloo.' Amanda agreed: 'We have to beg for... I mean, how many umbrellas have you put up over various countries when I've had to wee behind them? 'You'll notice that there's hundreds of costume changes for us as well. So we travel, for some reason, the company that we do it with, always hire the smallest cars. 'And I'm in the back with Christian, who does our hair and make up. You're in the front doing the music selection.' After admitted they didn't like the name of their new series either, Alan suggested it should be called My Big Fat Greek Renovation.

Bayer Leverkusen monitoring AS Monaco winger Maghnes Akliouche

Sky Germany reports that Bayer Leverkusen are monitoring AS Monaco winger Maghnes Akliouche as they look to boost their attacking options this summer. After the sale of Florian Wirtz, Leverkusen are looking to diversify their attacking options in an attempt to replace the 22-year-old. Advertisement die Werkself are already in talks with Malik Tillman over a move from PSV Eindhoven this summer, who could cost more than €30m, but the aim is to sign other players as well. One who is deemed as a dream target for Leverkusen is Monaco winger Maghnes Akliouche. Leverkusen have held initial talks with the 23-year-old, but the hurdle will be the price as Monaco have high demands for the winger, who has a contract until 2028. On top of this, Leverkusen could face competition from several other European clubs. Leverkusen have also been linked with Nico Paz of Como and Johan Bakayoko of PSV. This would suggest the direction in terms of formation that Leverkusen will take under Erik ten Hag, a 4-2-3-1. Previously, wingers were of no use to Leverkusen due to Xabi Alonso's preference for a 3-4-2-1 system. GGFN | Jack Meenan

Main highlights package, Today at Wimbledon, will undergo some changes. Rather than having a set slot on BBC Two during the first week, the long-running highlights show will begin when live action ends. The Telegraph claim that the first edition of Today at Wimbledon of this year's Championships next Monday will start at 11:55pm. A BBC spokesperson told SunSport: "Live Wimbledon coverage is scheduled to air on BBC One or BBC Two until 10pm in the first week, and until 9pm from the second week, when matches typically finish earlier. "We wouldn't show highlights on another channel during live play, so Today at Wimbledon will be available on BBC iPlayer and scheduled on BBC Two later in the evening, depending on when play ends. "It's currently set for 8pm from Tuesday 8th to Friday 11th July, when earlier finishes are expected." 5 Nick Kyrgios will not be rejoining the BBC's coverage this year Credit: BBC
