Tom Brady questions Wayne Rooney's ‘work ethic' during managerial stint at Birmingham
Back in 2023, Rooney was brought in as manager two months after the new owners bought the club, replacing John Eustace with the Blues sat sixth in the Championship. Rooney was sacked 83 days later as the club dropped to 20th and were eventually relegated.
In the new television series, Brady is seen questioning Rooney before the decision to sack him, with the seven-time Super Bowl winner telling colleagues: "I'm a little worried about our head coach's work ethic."
He added: "I mean, I don't know, I don't have great instincts on that."
For his part, Rooney attempted to explain his thoughts on Birmingham's problems, telling Brady that the culture surrounding the club needs to change.
He said: "Why they're playing in the Championship and not the Premier League is because we've all passed a ball, kicked the ball and run, but it's a focus, concentrated for 90 minutes."
After his dismissal, Rooney did not feel 13 weeks was "sufficient to oversee the changes that were needed".
Once Birmingham's relegation from the second division was confirmed, Brady later put the blame on the players despite the owners hiring seven different managers in just 10 months.
"Well we've already changed the coach, so it's really the players because the coach doesn't go out there and put the ball in the goal," Brady said.
"They were lazy, they were entitled and when you're lazy and entitled, you don't have much of a chance to succeed. We've got to change all the people that are associated with losing, so I think this summer there's going to be a lot of people gone."
Birmingham spent £30m on transfers ahead of the 2024/25 season which is a monumental sum for a League One side. The club went on to break the Football League record for most points in a season and topped the table with 111 to secure their promotion back to the Championship for the upcoming season.

"Benjamin Sesko is an upcoming talent and he's got certain qualities that could fit into Ruben Amorim's style of play," the Frenchman added. "He's got presence, height, he's good with his back against the defenders. He's got the athleticism to respond to the physicality of the Premier League. He's ticking a lot of boxes for sure." Ruben Amorim's dilemma: Unfit Andre Onana or unproven Bayindir?
Ruben Amorim is already facing his first dilemma of the new season over whether to take a risk on André Onana's fitness or pick the unproven Altay Bayindir in goal against Arsenal on Sunday. Manchester United's penalty shoot-out win over a Fiorentina side on Saturday that featured the club's previous goalkeeper David De Gea in goal, came with Bayindir continuing to deputise for the injured Onana. The summer pre-season campaign has now been completed, with Amorim's first-choice goalkeeper yet to raise a glove in anger, sidelined by a hamstring injury. Onana is now back in training with the first team and the predictions are that he will be declared match fit for their opening Premier League game at home on Sunday. But, with Onana's last competitive action having come at the end of May in the Europa League final defeat by Tottenham Hotspur, his selection against Arsenal would represent a calculated gamble. United are exploring the viability of a behind-closed-doors friendly against a local rival this week, to give Onana, and latest signing Benjamin Sesko, some 'real world' training. At the heart of Amorim's dilemma lies the fact that Bayindir, whose penalty shoot-out save from Fabiano Parisi won the game for United on Saturday, has yet to prove himself a reliable deputy for Onana. Despite United's problems, and numerous high-profile errors from Onana, Bayindir was handed just four Premier League starts last season, all in the final weeks of the season when United had given up on the league to focus on Europe instead. Three of Bayindir's four league games ended in defeat, with the Turkey goalkeeper letting in ten goals. While Bayindir was a small cog in a United team that was struggling to an unparalleled degree last season, those displays, and his form in pre-season, have hardly announced that he is ready to establish himself as Amorim's first-choice goalkeeper. Indeed, United have been linked with a high-profile goalkeeper signing this summer, with Emiliano Martínez and Gianluigi Donnarumma among the names to have reportedly come under consideration as Amorim addressed the issue. However, having spent over £210million on three new forwards in an attempt to improve the team's worst goalscoring campaign in more than half a century with 44 league goals, United need to generate money from sales before they can consider another big investment — and it appears increasingly likely that the manager has decided to retain Onana as his first-choice goalkeeper. That still does not lessen the inherent risk of fielding Onana on Sunday, given his lack of competitive action over the past three months. The latest uncertainty over the goalkeeping position was ironic, and not only because United won the shoot-out after an excellent Bayindir save. Fiorentina's goalkeeper De Gea was making his first return to Old Trafford since being unceremoniously ditched by Erik ten Hag two summers ago, with the Spaniard receiving a predictably reverential greeting by United supporters. De Gea also believed that he saw genuine shoots of recovery from a United squad that is certainly entering the new campaign in far better spirits than they finished the last and with excitement surrounding the new forwards Sesko, Bryan Mbeumo and Matheus Cunha. 'Sometimes this is football, you can't win all the time,' De Gea said. 'I know it's been some years that United struggle a bit but it's one of the best clubs in the world. It's a massive club and hopefully this year with the new signings and the manager starting a new era they can do something big and that's it. Hopefully this year they can win something and be there where they deserve.'
