Second man charged in connection with accidental shooting death of CPD officer Krystal Rivera
A second man was charged in connection with the accidental shooting of Chicago police officer Krystal Rivera earlier this month.
Jaylin Arnold, 27, of Chicago, was charged with felony counts including armed violence, possession of a firearm by a repeat felon, and possession of cocaine.
Members of the Chicago Police Department and the U.S. Marshals Great Lakes Regional Fugitive Task Force arrested him on Thursday morning in the 7500 block of South Vernon Avenue for a parole violation.
Police said he was also in possession of narcotics at the time of his arrest. An investigation by CPD's Investigative Response Team determined he had a gun when CPD officers confronted him in the 8200 block of South Drexel Avenue on the evening of June 5.
Officer Rivera was part of a CPD tactical team on patrol just before 10 p.m. when they tried to conduct an investigatory stop. As they approached, the suspect [Arnold] ran into a nearby apartment building.
Police chased him inside, and sources said Rivera and her partner followed into the apartment on the second floor.
CPD Supt. Larry Snelling said when officers got to that apartment, they were confronted by a second person armed with a rifle.
Rivera, 36, was accidentally shot in the back by a fellow officer and was rushed to the University of Chicago Medical Center, where she was pronounced dead.
Arnold is scheduled to appear at a detention hearing on Saturday.
The arrest comes just days after funeral arrangements for officer Rivera were released.

However, in Kelly's filing, the incidents he cited occurred in Arizona and North Carolina, where he is currently held in custody at the federal prison in Butner. Brindley noted that they had seen the loss coming on technical grounds, but swift recourse would be taken due to the delicate nature of the matter, which, according to him, had Kelly's life hanging by a thread. As reported by PEOPLE, the lawyer commented on the disturbing state of Kelly's health when he visited him on June 18, saying: "Mr. Kelly remains in prison with blood clots in his lungs — this threatens his life every minute that he is denied the surgical intervention (pulmonary embolectomy) that Duke University hospital doctors sought to perform, but were prevented from executing," Brindley claims. The danger could not be more imminent." Brindley had established in his emergency motion that Kelly was placed in solitary confinement after he spoke up as punishment. It was there that Brindley claimed a prison official fed him a toxic mix of substances under the guise of administering him his medication. Assistant U.S. Attorney Jason Julien, however, set the record straight on Brindley's narrative. According to Julien, solitary confinement was activated for Kelly to ensure his protection in prison. Julien reiterated that Kelly is a child molester with records of criminal and sexual abuse against children, which date back to President Bill Clinton's first term in office. The attorney noted that Kelly's crimes had occurred years before he was brought to book, and he has never taken responsibility for his actions or shown remorse. Brindley and his team painted a vivid picture of Kelly struggling for his life after the effects of the dangerous cocktail kicked in. Describing solitary confinement as forcefully imposed on his client, he explained that three prison officials were in on the plan. The Blast shared that the attorney accused the prison officials of hatching a plan to eliminate Kelly with the help of another inmate who had access to him. Kelly reportedly woke up feeling weak and dizzy on June 13 after ingesting the substance the day before. His vision also became blurry, and his knees gave way when he attempted to stand up, causing him to fall. He put in the final push when he crawled up to the door of the cell in a bid to get help, but he lost consciousness while at it. The singer was eventually transported to the Duke University Hospital after prison medical personnel failed to help him. Kelly spent two days in admission before the prison authorities allegedly forcefully extracted him back to prison against the doctor's advice. This is not Kelly's first time pointing accusing fingers at prison officials for their misconduct regarding his case. In 2023, he claimed they collaborated with Tasha K, a famous blogger, to spill sensitive information about his case to the public on the premise that they would get a financial settlement. As a result of this move, Kelly noted that the leaking started in 2019 after they taped his phone calls, visitor logs, email correspondence, and other private information. He added that Tasha K and her team also fabricated stories against him with the access they gained to his records. These false stories and weaponized narratives reportedly caused him psychological stress and emotional discomfort. Kelly and his attorney blamed the United States government for failing to take necessary security precautions and instead granted unbridled access to his details. The "The Storm Is Over" singer's call for clemency unearthed a significant episode in his story, which revolves around his former partner and her current standing with her family. As reported by The Blast, Joycelyn Savage, who was once engaged to the disgraced singer, has been cut off from contact with her family for approximately six years. Her family connected her behavior to the trauma of her experience with Kelly during their time together. The family's attorney, Gerald Griggs, explained that Savage is still under Kelly's mental control and has not found a way to get out of that cycle. The last time she was in direct contact with her family was a brief phone conversation in 2019. Memorial Day weekend shooting leaves 11 injured near North Myrtle Beach as police hunt suspects
South Carolina authorities continue to search for the suspect or suspects who carried out a mass shooting that left 11 people injured on Sunday evening in Little River, near North Myrtle Beach. The Horry County Police Department described the shooting as an isolated incident stemming from an altercation on a charter boat during a private Memorial Day gathering. There were about 124 people onboard the boat, including four crew members, when the shooting occurred, Horry County police said during a Tuesday press conference. Three victims are still hospitalized while eight have been released, authorities said during the press conference. "This type of violence will not be tolerated in Horry County," HCPD Chief Kris Leonhardt said. "We are going to do our very best to investigate this case and bring criminal charges against these folks that have caused this incident here in our county." Horry County Fire Department Chief Joseph Tanner said authorities initially got a call around 9:15 p.m. reporting an injury and responded accordingly. Upon arrival, officials located multiple gunshot-wounded victims. The charter boat party attendees were from out of town, Leonhardt said, making it more difficult to track down witnesses. A total of 10 victims sustained gunshot wounds and another person reported an unknown injury not related to gunfire, the police department said in a Monday press release. Some victims were recovered from the water, the North Myrtle Beach Police Department (NMBPD) said in a separate press release. "Of those, the worst of the injured are in critical but stable condition at area hospitals," Horry County police said in a press release. Videos and photos posted to social media on Sunday evening showed a heavy police presence in the area of the Dolphin Cruise parking lot in Little River, located north of North Myrtle Beach. NMBPD also said the South Carolina Law Enforcement Division (SLED) is investigating a separate incident involving a responding North Myrtle Beach officer who was injured with his own firearm near the Harbourgate Marina in North Myrtle Beach. "A NMBPD Officer was entering a gate to the dock when his rifle discharged twice, with one of the rounds striking his leg," the department said in its press release. "At the time of the discharge, the Officer had both of his hands on the gate, which was confirmed by later video evidence. Due to the Officer not attempting to utilize his weapon at the time, all Officers on scene believed that shots were being fired from the marina area." The officer was transported to a local hospital, where he underwent surgery for his injuries. Video footage obtained from a witness apparently shows the incident, and authorities determined that "the discharge was from the wounded Officer's rifle," and the scene was released to SLED. Horry County police said the shooting remains under investigation, and "there is currently no associated risk to the community." Crime concerns in and around Myrtle Beach have been heightened since April 26, when a shooting in the Myrtle Beach entertainment district left the shooter dead and 11 victims injured. Myrtle Beach officials described the shooting as an isolated incident at the time. At least 1 dead, 10 shot during South Carolina Juneteenth event near veterans' center
Nearly a dozen people were shot Saturday night near a South Carolina veterans' center during a "Juneteenth celebration." The Anderson County Sheriff's Office confirmed at least 10 people were shot, and one person is dead after a fight in the parking lot of the local Veterans of Foreign Wars post. One person was flown to Greenville Memorial Hospital and at least eight others were taken to nearby hospitals in Anderson and Greenville. The crowd, which included hundreds of people, gathered for the county's sixth annual Juneteenth celebration, sheriff's officials wrote in a statement provided to Fox News Digital. Following the shooting, hundreds of people scattered, leaving behind shoes and debris in the road. In what officials called a "chaotic scene," more than 50 law enforcement personnel, EMS, firefighters, troopers and South Carolina Department of Natural Resources (SCDNR) officers responded. "This remains an active investigation and detectives and deputies continue to work this unfolding scene," the agency said.
