Giant wheel to give visitors bird's eye view of Darwen

BBC News07-02-2025

A giant observation wheel, set to open this weekend, will offer a bird's eye view of a Lancashire town - but only for a couple of weeks. The 35m-high (115ft) big wheel will open in Darwen's Market Square on Saturday, and will be in place until Sunday 2 March.People can buy tickets to ride in one of the 24 gondolas - one of which is adapted for wheelchairs - and enjoy views across the town, from midday to 20:00 GMT every day until the end of the month. Councillor Quesir Mahmood, who has responsibility for town centres, hailed the wheel as "a great addition" to the town's sites: "I'm sure the views over to Darwen's beloved Jubilee Tower and beautiful moorland are going to be fantastic."
"It's certainly going to be an exciting spectacle in the town," said Mahmood, describing a ride on the wheel as "a perfect memory-making opportunity"."I hope it's going to bring more local residents and visitors into Darwen, who can see what the town has to offer, particularly over the February half-term holiday."Fingers crossed for some clear skies."A trip on the wheel will cost £6 for an adult ticket and £4 for a child ticket; a family ticket (two adults and two children) will cost £17.

Shoppers run to Matalan for £20 vanity case that doubles as the perfect holiday hand luggage & it's cabin size approved

Click to share on X/Twitter (Opens in new window) Click to share on Facebook (Opens in new window) MATALAN is selling a "cute" vanity case for just £20 - and it could double as the perfect hand luggage. Now that summer is finally upon us, and with temperatures set to ramp up again next week, many of us are likely making plans for a holiday. Thankfully, Matalan has the perfect product to put travellers at ease - and it's on sale. Whether it's a sunny getaway, hen do abroad or a work trip, the Hardshell Vanity will hold everything you need for a short time away. In classic cream and tan colours, the small case is built with a durable hardshell exterior which offers extra protection for your belongings while remaining lightweight for easy handling. It has wheels for easy transport, separate compartments for easy packing and measures 36.5 x 17 x 27cm. This makes it ideal for EasyJet customers, with their under-seat cabin bag's maximum dimensions being 45x36x20cm, including handles and wheels. The airline claims this size allows you to 'bring all the essentials for a short trip' - but Pia decided to see if this was true for her. And if it's a UK staycation you're heading away for, the vanity case also has a space expansion meaning you can enjoy up to 25% extra packing space. Posting on the BARGAIN LOVERS - Poundland, Home Bargains, B&M, Primark, The Range & More Facebook page, which boasts 843,000 members, one savvy shopper said: "Picked up this lovely travel vanity case from Matalan, £20 was £25 but there is 20% off. "It also comes with a strap, and a mirror and has lots of inside pockets and slots to slot your products into." Primark launches new range of cabin bags on wheels - they're approved by all budget airlines & there's matching carry-ons too Other bargain hunters are just as impressed as one gushed: "I've got one they are fab." "I need one", cried a second. A third echoed: "Need a trip to matalan now then." "How cute", chimed in a fourth. Meanwhile, someone else suggested: "For our holibobs?" Holiday packing tips Jemma Solomon, aka The Label Lady has got 5 packing tips to help you get organised for your next holiday. 1. Write a list Think about all the essentials you need to take with you; suncream, medicine, a few games for the kids, beach towels, and write everything in one list, which you can tick off as you add it to your suitcase. Or for complete ease, try Google's AI app - Gemini - which will create a list for you and help you not over pack. 2. Involve your kids Jemma said: 'My girls are getting older, they're 11 and nine, and they enjoy helping to pack. So I send them a list, and say 'this is what you need' and they follow the list. 'And then I give them a rucksack each - and say to them 'you can have whatever you want in there as long as it's not liquid', and they can take that on the plane. And that's their 'home away from home' items.' 3. Try a hack or two She said: "I think they all work, but for different reasons - and you've just got to pick the right one for your trip. "Rolling your clothes is really good to stop your clothes from getting creases. And if you're trying to get a lot of items into your case, it's a space saver. 'Packing cubes are great - for example, I'm going on holiday with my three kids and we're all using the same suitcase for our clothes. "These handy compartments let you separate your clothes, toiletries and tech into designated cubes, maximising luggage space by keeping your items compressed and neatly stacked. "I love taking them abroad with the family and it means my kids can easily take charge of their own items once we've arrived." 4. Decant beauty products Do you really need to take full-size bottles of shampoo and conditioner with you? The beauty industry has evolved so much, you can now buy shampoo bars or sheets - which are much lighter and smaller. Or, if you'll be popping to the shops when you're abroad, consider buying some items when you arrive. 5. Get organised before you come home Jemma said: 'When you repack on holiday [before coming home], the trick is to separate clean from dirty clothes. 'Also pack it in some form of order - so lights, darks, colours for items that need washing, or if you wash your clothes by person in the household, piles for each person. "Then you can put it straight into the washing machine. Do it straight away, don't leave it." Unfortunately, the Matalan case is too big for Ryanair's underseat baggage dimensions (40x20x25cm). But Primark is selling an underseat bag which has racked up a legion of fans, and measures 40x20x25cm, when its wheels are removed, meaning it's fully compliant with the budget airline. The wheels are 'easy click', so they can be detached in seconds on the plane if you need. The hardshell suitcase also includes a handy bag for storing the wheels during the flight, and has a number of different zipped compartments to make packing easier. The bags also won't break the bank, costing just £25 each and saving you having to pay for any luggage on the flight.

End-of-terrace house looks normal from the outside but hides bizarre secret in sprawling basement – would YOU move in?

The house has nine en-suite bathrooms SECRETS BENEATH End-of-terrace house looks normal from the outside but hides bizarre secret in sprawling basement – would YOU move in? A BLACKPOOL guest house has undergone a jaw-dropping transformation and now contains a private nightclub, cinema room, and space for 24 guests. Wayne and Katie Anne Mylroie have spent nearly two years converting the modest semi-detached property into a high-spec holiday home. 7 Wayne and Katie Anne Mylroie turned the Blackpool guesthouse into a private nightclub Credit: Facebook 7 The house has a cinema room, pool table, hot tub room and private basement nightclub Credit: Facebook Just a short walk from the promenade, the couple named the property The Fun House. Announcing the launch on Facebook, the couple said: "After almost two years in the making, we're finally live and we have had our first guests." Described by the owners as "the perfect party house", the property boasts a "large sociable lounge with custom seating and pool table, a cinema room, a hot tub room and your very own exclusive private basement nightclub." Inside, the house features nine en-suite bedrooms with 15 beds, offering space for large groups looking to celebrate in style. "The Fun House has 9 bedrooms all en-suite with 15 beds that sleeps 24 guests," the post reads. One standout feature is a uniquely designed bedroom with dramatic lighting effects: "It also has the coolest kids/adult room with a light-up lightening clouded ceiling." Every inch of the property has been carefully designed and finished to an exceptionally high standard. "It has been completed to the highest standard so you would never want to leave!" the Mylroies added. With its bold interior, private nightclub and close proximity to Blackpool's attractions, The Fun House is already turning heads as one of the seaside town's most striking new holiday rentals. The couple might have their work cut out to win the locals over though who claim Airbnbs and short term lets are "ruining" the town. People living in Blackpool, Lancs, say their lives are being blighted by anti-social behaviour. They raised their concerns as tens of thousands of holiday-makers are set to flood Britain's resorts and tourist hot spots for the Easter Bank Holiday weekend. In England, the short-term let sector is unregulated, except in London where there's a 90-day per year cap on letting out properties. Blackpool City Council says it's received just one complaint about short-term lets since 2019 – but the council doesn't know how many are in the area. A total of 16 planning enforcement notices have been issued in the same period. Residents of the seaside resort town, known for its traditional B&Bs, tell a different story. One resident said she has operated three hotels in Blackpool's town centre for eight years. She says the proliferation of Airbnbs and other short-term lets, where owners are not present, have brought the character of the street down – with rooms being used for parties until the early hours of the morning and even prostitution. She said: 'The ones now, there's nobody there. If somebody's booked a double room, they know the code. 'If they meet friends with a girl, they use that code, go in, use the room, and go out. 'It's like one person's booked the room, a couple who's out for the night and give the code to another couple. 'They use the room and just go out after an hour.' B&B owners Sandra Spriggs, 52, and husband John, 69, have owned the Bianca Guesthouse on Blackpool's Palatine Road for 20 years. The couple says they have heard loud stag and hen parties inside unattended AirBNBs. Sandra said: 'My friend lives next door to an AirBNB. It's bloody noisy, especially in the summer – she actually goes to her daughter's for the weekend so she hasn't got to put up with the noise.' 7 There is a hot tub room with bright green LED lighting Credit: 7 The cinema room offers up a variety of films for guests to watch Credit: 7 Katie Anne said that the house had taken the couple two years Credit: 7 The couple said it had been finished to the 'highest standard' Credit: Facebook

Six people missing after plane crashes into Pacific Ocean

Six people are feared dead after a small plane crashed into the Pacific Ocean. The seven-seater Cessna 414 crashed three miles west of Point Loma just off the San Diego coast about 12.50pm on Sunday. The plane took off from San Diego International Airport and was headed to Phoenix, Arizona. Surfer Tyson Wislofsky told NBC 7: 'I saw him come down at an angle. He wasn't flying straight to the ground. 'The next time he came out of the clouds, he went straight into the water. But after I saw this splash, about six seconds later, it was dead silent. More Trending 'I knew that they went in the water, nose first, at a high speed.' The cause of the crash is unclear and is being investigated by transport officials. The debris field is 200 feet, the US Coast Guard said. The 1970 Cessna 414 is owned by Optimal Health Systems, a vitamin and supplement shop in Pima, Arizona, Federal Aviation Administration records show. Got a story?
