
‘Corn Sweat' Is Making This Heat Wave Even Worse
It's midsummer, so heat and humidity are pretty standard in the wetter eastern half of the country. It's unlikely this heat wave will break records, but it could still be dangerous, says Bob Oravec, lead forecaster with the National Weather Service in College Park, Md.
On Monday the heat and humidity are centered over the Southeast and along the Gulf Coast. By midweek it will move northward along the Mississippi Valley and up into the Midwest before shifting toward the Mid-Atlantic and Northeast toward the end of the week. Highs are expected to be around 95 to 100 degrees Fahrenheit as the heat wave moves along, but the humidity means it could feel closer to 110 degrees F in the worst-affected areas. Large swaths of the eastern U.S. will be in the 'major' Heat Risk category, a NWS classification that incorporates heat, humidity and data on when heat-related hospitalizations tend to rise in a given area. Pockets will be in the 'extreme' category, the highest on the four-category scale.

Part of the reason for the oppressive humidity is that 'the weather pattern has been favorable for wet weather,' Oravec says. 'Everything is wet, saturated,' which means there is more evaporation from soil and transpiration from plants. This is particularly true in the Midwest, where huge fields of corn, soybeans and other crops release moisture as the temperature climbs. The process is akin to how humans perspire in the heat, hence the nickname 'corn sweat.' 'The Midwest is famous for high dewpoints from the vegetation,' Oravec says.
Plants aside, the phenomenon has serious implications for humans. High humidity and heat raise the risks for heat illness —it is harder for the body to cool itself via sweating because the air is already so full of moisture that perspiration doesn't evaporate. Those concerns are especially high for at-risk groups such as young children, older adults, those who have various health conditions or take certain medications, people who work outdoors and the unhoused.
Prolonged exposure to such conditions can result in heat exhaustion, which can cause fatigue, dizziness, nausea and a cessation of sweating. If a person with this condition doesn't get to a cooler location or receive treatment quickly, heat exhaustion can progress to heat stroke, which causes the body to lose its ability to cool itself, an extremely dangerous situation. In fact, it can be fatal.
Experts caution people to stay hydrated and avoid strenuous outdoor activity, especially in the middle of the day when temperatures are highest. There are also tips for keeping your home cool.
These concerns will linger both in the short and long term. In the long term, heat waves are becoming hotter and happening more frequently than in the past because of the added heat trapped by greenhouse gases in the atmosphere as a result of humans' burning fossil fuels. An analysis by the nonprofit Climate Central found that this human-caused climate change made this extreme heat event at least three times more likely for nearly 160 million people, almost half of the U.S. population.
In the short term, weather models show humid heat over the eastern U.S. for the next week or two. 'The weather pattern is just kind of stagnant and is stuck,' Oravec says. 'It looks like it's going to be a hot few weeks.'

With temperatures soaring this week, residents in Cambridge, Massachusetts are doing whatever they can to beat the heat. For many, that means less time outside. "I'm out in this for 10 minutes to walk the dog and then I go home and it's shower time," a Cambridge resident said. Amid the heat wave, public parks with splash pads have been a reprieve for families seeking relief. "I'm here Monday through Friday," said Emily Ortiz, a young woman enjoying the splash pad at Dana Park. As climate change continues to push urban temperatures higher, experts are exploring long-term strategies to make city living more tolerable. Kishore Varanasi is a principal designer at CBT, a firm focused on creating cooler public environments. Using thermal imaging, Varanasi demonstrates just how hot urban surfaces can become. "You can see here the surface is measuring 136 degrees Fahrenheit, but the air temperature is 88 degrees," he said. "So, if I bring it to the shade, you see that it matches the air temperature." Varanasi said that the excessive heat is due to the way cities have been historically designed. "What makes cities hotter is everything that we've built. The air conditioners spitting out heat, the materials that we've used, the asphalt, cars," Varanasi said. "All of it makes cities 10 to 15 degrees hotter." To combat the urban heat island effect, Varanasi and his team are working with urban planners to redesign spaces by introducing more shade and using materials like special concrete mixes that retain less heat. "We also have other alternatives to create shade," he said. For example, you can use structures, like the one at Cambridge Crossing. "It is a part of the park, but it is shaded so on days like this you can be in this space and feel comfortable," he said. It is an effect that can be felt, with temperatures decreasing up to 40 degrees under his shaded structures. As extreme heat becomes more common, Cambridge's push for cooler, shaded spaces may serve as a model for other urban areas grappling with rising temperatures.

What makes coastal California's Crescent City so vulnerable to tsunamis?
Crescent City, California, residents are breathing a sigh of relief after its latest tsunami warning was downgraded to an advisory. Crescent City, a redwood-tree lined coastal California community, is known as the tsunami capital of the country. The city has experienced more than three-dozen tsunamis in the last century. Once again, tsunami waves ‒ luckily modest this time ‒ reached the town, peaking as high as 4 feet near city shores before dawn on July 30, according to the National Weather Service. The waves came just hours after an 8.8-magnitude earthquake, one of the strongest tremblors in recorded history, struck off Russia's east coast, prompting tsunami waves in Hawaii and along the West Coast. "It was a long night for all of us. We were fortunate this time," Crescent City Manager Eric Weir said during a morning briefing on July 30. "There was significant tsunami surges. We're still dealing with those now, but it did stay within the banks." The July 29 tsunami warning was initially expected to last as long as 30 hours in Crescent City, according to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration. Weir said the waves caused significant damage to a harbor dock as it lifted decking off the pilings, but the rest of the city was spared. "Downtown is at a high enough elevation that it is open," Weir said, about an hour before the tsunami warning was downgraded to an "advisory" for Crescent City, one of the last West Coast communities considered still at risk. City officials still advised locals to stay away from the harbor, beaches and waterways due to continued wave activity. "Conditions have started to improve," city officials said in a Facebook post. "But the ocean is still angry." Crescent City is vulnerable because it is located near the southern end of the Cascadia Subduction Zone, a major fault line capable of producing dangerous tsunamis and intense earthquakes, according to the Pacific Northwest Seismic Network. Several published studies also indicate that a Cascadia Subduction Zone tsunami can cause severe damage and inland flooding. In 2011, the earthquake in Japan spurred waves of more than 8 feet, destroying Crescent City's harbor. "The water went out to a low tide, but each wave was coming back in and it was getting higher and higher," Max Blair, 79, a volunteer at the Del Norte Historical Society located near downtown Crescent City, recalled to USA TODAY on July 30. "The harbor was a whole different story." One man died during the incident as the harbor docks were smashed and dozens of boats sank, causing an estimated $50 million in damage. The harbor was eventually rebuilt as the first "tsunami resistant port" on the West Coast. Another deadly tsunami struck Crescent City in 1964, triggered by a massive earthquake in Alaska, killing 11 people and injuring 35 others. The tsunami destroyed nearly 300 buildings and homes, causing between $11 million and $16 million in damages. The incident is considered one of the most devastating tsunamis in U.S. history. "I've heard and read about it," said Blair who's lived in Crescent City for more than 30 years. "I hope we never get to experience anything like that one."

An 8.8-magnitude earthquake struck off Russia's eastern coast on late Wednesday morning, local time. The quake triggered tsunami waves across the Pacific that hit Russia, Japan, Canada and parts of the US coast. Several nations issued tsunami warnings and evacuation orders. CNN tracked how it all happened, in maps and charts. The earthquake, tied for the sixth-strongest ever recorded, sent massive tsunami waves across the ocean. The highest waves, as of 5:30 a.m. Pacific Time on Wednesday, reached up to 5.7 feet and were recorded mainly in Hawaii, as well as parts of California and Alaska. Some tourists and locals in Maui reportedly spent the night in their vehicles after evacuating to higher ground. Although nearly 2 million people were told to evacuate in Japan initially, all tsunami warnings have been lifted. Tsunami warnings were issued in several countries — though by midday Wednesday Pacific Time many had been lifted or downgraded to advisories. A tsunami warning means dangerous, widespread coastal flooding with strong currents is possible or already occurring, and evacuation is recommended, according to the National Weather Service. A tsunami advisory means 'strong currents or waves dangerous to those in or very near the water' are possible in the region, and beach and harbor areas could flood. People under advisories should 'stay out of the water and away from beaches and waterways,' the weather service says. Following the quake, various levels of tsunami alerts were issued for the Marquesas Islands of French Polynesia, the Galápagos Islands in Ecuador, Papua New Guinea, Solomon Islands and Vanuatu. They were also issued across the US coastline, Hawaii and Canada. A small portion of the Northern California coast, just south of the Oregon border, was under a tsunami warning — the highest level alert — Wednesday morning local time. It has since been downgraded to an advisory. Experts say tsunami warning systems thankfully seemed effective for evacuations and worked in a 'timely manner.' No casualties were reported in Russia.
