‘Power outage in NEET centres did not impact students' performance'
There has been no impact on the performance of NEET candidates due to power outage at three different examination centres in and around Chennai on May 4, 2025, the National Testing Agency (NTA) told the Madras High Court on Tuesday. Appearing before Justice C. Kumarappan who was seized of writ petitions filed by a group of candidates, Additional Solicitor General (ASG) AR. L. Sundaresan said, the NTA had conducted a scientific assessment and found no such impact. He said the examination was conducted in broad daylight, and hence, the power failure did not make much of a difference. Moreover, the students could not have marked the OMR sheet if there had been any impact, he added. Stating that the number of questions answered by the students before the court was compared with the district average, he said, such comparison showed that the students had answered a higher number of questions than the district average. However, the petitioners' counsel wondered how such a defence could be taken by the NTA against the helpless students who had undergone a great deal of anxiety due to power outage, and consequently, could not perform to the best of their abilities. After hearing both sides, the judge directed the High Court Registry to list the matter under the caption 'For Orders' on Friday. Though the petitioners' counsel insisted on restraining the NTA from releasing the NEET 2025 results till then, the judge refused to pass any such interim order. The ASG told the court that a summer vacation judge had directed the NTA not to release the results until the agency conducted an inquiry and found out whether the power outage in the three centres had any impact on the performance of the candidates. Now that the inquiry is over, there should not be any impediment on releasing the results, he said, and urged the court to dismiss all three writ petitions filed by students who had appeared for NEET at the centres in Avadi, Kunrathur, and K.K. Nagar in Chennai.

DU teachers may be called for duties during summer break, up in arms over circular
New Delhi: Delhi University 's latest notification allowing the administration to summon faculty members for official duties during the vacation period if required has triggered discontent among them. According to the academic calendar, the summer break runs from June 1 to July 20 for most undergraduate programmes and from June 29 to July 20 for those teaching in the second semester. However, a circular issued on May 30 stated that "faculty members on summer vacations can be called for duty assignments, including admissions, examinations, evaluations and administrative work, and they shall have to abide by the same. " The clause has sparked discontent among teachers, many of whom say it undermines the very idea of a vacation and erodes their entitlement to rest and research time. "This notification reeks of the assumption that some of us aren't working just because our semester started late due to NTA delays. It's insulting," said Latika Gupta, assistant professor in DU's department of education. "We are constantly engaged — whether in teaching, guiding PhD scholars, or research. Denying us an uninterrupted break while threatening us with administrative duties is deeply disrespectful to our academic roles. " Pankaj Garg, chairman of Indian National Teachers' Congress, said he was planning to write to the vice-chancellor demanding compensatory earned leave for teachers. "If our services are now effectively non-vacational due to staggered calendars and CUET delays, then we must be compensated accordingly," he added. The notification, issued with the approval of the competent authority, offers no mention of compensation or compensatory leave for those recalled. There was no immediate response from the university over the concerns.

Calcutta HC allows pleas challenging WBSSC teacher recruitment notification
The Calcutta High Court on Tuesday (June 3, 2025) granted permission to file pleas challenging the West Bengal government's notification on this year's teacher recruitment process. These pleas are expected to be heard by a vacation Bench of the court later this week. On May 30, the West Bengal School Service Commission (WBSSC) and the State Education Department issued a notification for the State Level Selection Test (SLST) for the recruitment of assistant teachers for classes 9 to 12 in government-run and government-aided schools. Concurrently, the State government has filed a review petition in the Supreme Court seeking modifications to the top court's April 3 order. The Supreme Court had cancelled nearly 26,000 teaching and non-teaching appointments made through the 2016 recruitment process, calling it 'vitiated and tainted'. On April 17, the top court directed that fresh recruitment be initiated by May 31 and completed by December 31. While many among the affected group of sacked teachers have reiterated their demand to be exempted from the new process, a section of waitlisted candidates from the 2016 panel have moved the Calcutta High Court against the 2025 notification itself. A large section of the protestors and litigants who had earlier challenged the 2016 appointments had claimed that, despite clearing the examination, they were denied jobs due to irregularities in the selection process. The current petitioners, who identify themselves as among those deprived, have argued that the latest recruitment guidelines violate the Supreme Court's directives. In particular, they have objected to provisions in the notification that appear to favour sacked teachers — such as the allocation of an additional 10 marks for prior teaching experience. Notably, no such provision existed in the 2016 recruitment. The Supreme Court, in its April 17 order, had clarified: 'We clarify that this order shall not be read as conferring any special right or advantage on the aforesaid teachers, insofar as the fresh recruitment process is concerned.' Suvojit Das, a teacher whose appointment from the 2016 panel was cancelled but who maintains he was untainted, told The Hindu that the current recruitment notification does not particularly benefit any category of affected candidates, whether sacked or waitlisted. He claimed that the sacked teachers are unwilling to participate in fresh recruitment. 'In the most unfortunate case where we are forced to partake in recruitments, we should not be made to compete with the entire pool of candidates this year. We should only compete for the number of declared vacancies of 2016 for which we had originally applied,' he said. 'Moreover, in that case, the untainted appointees of 2016 who might not clear the SLST this year should also receive some benefit from the government,' Mr. Das added. He further argued that a re-evaluation of the 2016 OMR sheets could help distinguish meritorious candidates — whether waitlisted or sacked — from those who were part of the tainted process. Meanwhile, the Detective Department of the Bidhannagar Police Commissionerate on Tuesday issued summons to two protesting teachers, Amit Ranjan Bhuiyan and Mehebub Mondal, for questioning.
