Want to turn your budget telly into a supercharged entertainment system? There are some easy ways to do it

High-end TVs are great if you've got the budget – but not everyone needs to splash out on a top model

TV SETTINGS MAKEOVER
First off, make sure that you're using the best picture settings for movie night.
One major offender is Motion Smoothing, which you'll want to turn off if you're watching films.
Videos are just lots of images shown very quickly. Your TV's refresh rate tells you how many times it does this per second.
Modern TVs often have a refresh rate of 60Hz, meaning they refresh the image on screen every 60 seconds. But Hollywood flicks are typically produced at 24 frames per second.
This mismatch is part of what gives movies their charm.
But Motion Smoothing artificially inserts fake frames to bring content up to 60 frames per second. This means you'll end up with very smooth footage, which is great for fast-paced sport – but not for watching The Godfather.
Look for settings like Motion Smoothing, Motion Interpolation, or Motion Plus, and turn them off for movie night.
There's also another setting available on lots of TV brands called Filmmaker Mode.
This will turn Motion Smoothing off itself, but also tweaks TV settings to look as good as possible for movies.
Look out for that and switch it on.
Amazon finally launches Luna streaming service in the US with free games for Prime members
And finally, consider turning Power Saver Mode off.
It's great for trimming energy bills, but it'll typically reduce brightness to limit power demand.
So if you've got a movie you really want to watch, try turning Energy Saver features off.
BOOST YOUR SPEED
Budget TVs are a great way to save money – but it also means the telly maker has cut costs too.

Plugging in an Apple TV 4K is a far cheaper way to upgrade your telly than buying an ultra-high-end one
Credit: Apple
Often that means stuffing a very cheap (and not particularly powerful) processor inside.
You'll experience that in the form of laggy menus, and channels and apps loading up slowly.
There's no real way to fix this without upgrading your television, which is costly.
So instead, just get around it – and by a speedy streaming gadget instead.
If you bag yourself one of the more powerful plug-in streamers, like an Amazon Fire TV Stick 4K Max (£70) or an Apple TV 4K box (£149), you can dodge the issue entirely.
That's because when your TV is using that streamer, it'll be running off the plug-in device's processor instead.
So with an Apple TV 4K, you'll have extremely snappy menus that feel lightning fast compared to a budget telly.
It's one of the easiest ways to upgrade a TV, and it's significantly cheaper than forking out for an uber luxe telly with a powerful processor inside.

BONUS HDMI PORTS
Cheap gadget that gives you even more ports on TV
If you've bought a TV in the past two decades, chances are that it has HDMI ports.
These are the common ports that let you plug in other devices, like game consoles or a laptop via a cable.
TVs typically come with between two and four of these, though sometimes you'll find more.

Make sure you have enough HDMI ports for your telly needs

Sadly in the modern age, it's easy to run out of them.
You might have an Amazon Fire TV Stick, an Xbox, a Sky Stream, and the new Nintendo Switch 2.
And if you've only got two ports, you're really going to struggle.
One way to get around this is to buy a HDMI switch.
It's a bit like a multi-plug extension cable for HDMI, letting you connect several gadgets to a single port.
You can pick them up on Amazon from anywhere between £10 and £40, depending on the number of extra HDMI ports that you want.
They'll usually come with a remote that lets you switch between the bonus ports.

Tubi recently launched in the UK and is one of the easiest ways to enjoy free TV without credit cards or sign-ups

Think about the cost of Netflix, Disney+, Apple TV, and Now TV – and then whatever else you're paying for.
Thankfully there are lots of ways to watch telly for free.
In fact, I recently tested the best free TV apps to see which are worth your time.
I was particularly impressed by Tubi and Plex, but there are plenty of other apps worth trying too.

Pluto TV and Rakuten TV are both popular options, as well as Xumo Play (which is available on Sky boxes).
All of these apps are totally free, but the catch is that you'll need to sit through ads.
Of course paid apps like Netflix and Amazon Video are already showing ads on their cheapest streaming tiers.
So if you can put up with ads, you'll be able to enjoy an absolute treasure trove of free telly.
GAMING UPGRADE
Free & cheap games to claim (including free Fortnite without console)
If you have an Amazon Prime subscription, you can play top games without a console.
It works through a service called Amazon Luna, which "streams" the games to you – a bit like Netflix, but more interactive.
The Amazon Luna app is available on a load of devices including Amazon Fire TV models, plus a bunch of Samsung and LG televisions too.
8
Amazon Luna lets you play games over the internet – rather than needing a physical console
Credit: Amazon
You'll also need an Amazon Luna controller, or a PlayStation or Xbox joypad.
Google's Stadia controller also works if you still have one.
Then you can pair your controller to your TV and play games over the internet – no console required.
Amazon makes a rolling selection of games available as part of Luna free for Prime members.
8
You can even play hit game Fortnite for free on your TV without a console if you're an Amazon Prime member
Credit: Amazon
And Fortnite is a long-term entrant on that list, so you can enjoy it as if you had a console.
It's like having an Xbox or PS5 plugged in, but you don't need it.

Refurbished £80 Fire HD Tablet 'works perfectly' and you 'can't tell it's not new'
'I have used iPads and Samsungs but I can't believe how good this is!' One piece of tech that has become increasingly popular over the last decade is the tablet. These nifty gadgets are the perfect balance between a laptop and a smartphone. They allow users to take notes, watch their favourite shows, and play games on a lightweight device that doesn't take up too much space. However, with so many different devices on the market at varying price points, it can be difficult to choose which one works best for you. For those who are a fan of Amazon products, then one of the retailer's popular tablets may be the best fit. At the moment Amazon has a cracking deal on the Amazon Fire HD 10 Tablet that has been refurbished. Normally retailing for £134.99, tech lovers can now snap up this 2023 release for only £80.99 in a limited time deal. As one of Amazon's Certified Refurbished products, the Fire HD 10 Tablet has gone through thorough testing. This means its defective parts have been replaced and it has been inspected to work and look like it is brand new. For those a bit dubious, many shoppers have admitted that they couldn't even tell that the device was refurbished. Said to boast a 25 per cent faster performance than the previous generation, this tablet comes with 3GB of RAM to provide seamless streaming and gaming. Along a 10.1-inch 1080p Full HD display, this device comes with a 13 hour battery life and the storage can be expanded up to 1TB. With Alexa built in and an Amazon Kids+ feature to allow parents control over the content and apps their children are accessing, this tablet also boasts a 5MP front-facing camera so users can easily keep in touch with friends and family. And for those who love to read and have been contemplating updating their Kindle, this Amazon Tablet comes with the Kindle app already built in, which will allow users to access their existing library of purchased books and continue right where they left off on the other device. For those wanting to buy a new device, Amazon has dropped the price of the Samsung Galaxy Tab A9. Normally retailing for £169, shoppers can now snap up the 64GB edition for £104.99. With an 8.7-inch screen, shoppers can multitask with ease as the tablet can split the display in two and perform two tasks at the same time. Alternatively, Argos has cut the price of the HONOR Pad X8a 11 Inch 64GB Wi-Fi Tablet down to £99.99 (RRP £109.99). With a battery life of up to 23 hours, this tablet boasts a 11-inch display that is equipped with IPS technology, which means the picture quality won't be compromised even from a side view. Back to the refurbed Amazon Fire 10 Tablet, shoppers have awarded it a 4.4 star rating, with over 500 people buying the device in the last 30 days. One happy shopper wrote: "For those seeking a reliable tablet without breaking the bank, the Certified Refurbished Amazon Fire HD 10 Tablet is a solid choice. It offers great performance, a vibrant display, and long battery life—all at a budget-friendly price." With another five-star reviewer praising: "Have used iPads and samsungs but i cant believe how good this is!!!! smart light quality and excellent screen quality and very fluid!!!" However, one shopper did leave a mixed review, writing: "The quality of this product is excellent and it is really easy to use. My only disappointment is the availability of apps that can be used on it. "I purchased this device to stream my favourite shows but most of the apps are not available or only compatible with a firestick. There isn't even a decent YouTube app. It's frustrating to have to use the websites to access what I want to watch. Despite this, a top reviewer commented: "This is the fourth one that I've bought over the years but the first refurbished one. You can't tell that it's not new. Works perfectly." While another customer gushed: "Couldn't tell this was refurbished, looks brand new. Faster and lighter than previous model. Good value and easy to use and set up." The Irishman - still sporting a bizarre mohawk haircut - had blood taken from his shoulder and urine collected. Quoting Will Ferrell's 2006 Talladega Nights character Ricky Bobby, McGregor wrote: "I p*** excellence." McGregor has not fought since July 2021 - when he brutally broke his leg against Dustin Poirier. The former two-weight UFC champion wants to fight on the UFC's proposed event on the grounds of the White House. It comes after US President Donald Trump announced crazy plans to host a fight card at the Oval Office. But McGregor has been clouded by a string of controversies outside of the cage. CASINO SPECIAL - BEST CASINO BONUSES FROM £10 DEPOSITS The Sun first reported how the multimillionaire fighter was caught appearing to kiss a mystery woman on a beach in Florida. Just days later, McGregor was spotted with the same woman enjoying a meal in Fort Lauderdale. McGregor responded by whisking his finacee Dee Devlin away to Sardinia to celebrate his birthday amid the controversy surrounding him. In December, the mulitimillionaire fighter was found liable for assault in a civil case against him dating back to 2018. The court heard how the professional fighter was said to have "brutally raped and battered" Nikita Hand in a penthouse at the Beacon Hotel. McGregor - who was ordered to pay Ms Hand about £206,000 in damages and pay her legal costs - has since sought an appeal. 7 Dee Devlin and McGregor on holiday with their four kids Credit: instagram 7 The long-time couple posed on the beach Credit: instagram McGregor also punched a man in an Ibiza nightclub in June - with The Sun capturing the shocking moment. Detectives believe a person doused the Black Forge Inn with a "flammable liquid" at 3am. It's understood the suspect used a flammable liquid at the front of the premises before setting it on fire and then fleeing the scene. Gardai are examining CCTV from the area in a bid to identify the suspect. It's the second time McGregor's pub has been targeted in an arson attack. Philips 'excellent value for money' wireless headphones get price drop
The Philips headphones are on sale in three colourways Headphones can be useful accessories for everyday life. They are ideal for commuting to work, going to the gym, walking the dog, or simply doing the housework. They're not just for listening to music either, they can also be used to take calls and keep up with the latest podcasts. Over at Debenhams, shoppers can currently find a reduction on a pair of Philips wireless headphones, worth £49.99, which are on sale for £34.99. For a limited time, the retailer will include a mystery free gift in consumer electronics worth £10. The Bluetooth-powered headphones are made with a cushioned headband for comfort, soft ear cups that can be angled, and 25 hours of play time when fully charged. Shoppers can choose from black, white, and light brown colorways, however the latter hue has limited stock. A Debenhams buyer said: "Bought these for my teenage daughter at sale price. " Excellent value for money, great product. Would definitely recommend. Daughter loves them." More ratings and reviews can be found on Amazon, where the headphones are also priced at £34.99. One consumer raved about the connectivity between the earphones and other devices. They said: "I've paired with the TV, and they're perfect." "Very good sound but to be listened to at moderate volume to enjoy it", said another shopper. Elsewhere, emerging marketplace Yimbly is selling these JBL wireless noise-cancelling headphones for £79.99, down from £99.99. Yimbly is owned by The Mirror's parent company, Reach PLC. Over at Argos, shoppers can buy these Beats Solo 4 On-Ear Headphones for £199.95. The headphones are foldable, making them easy to store in bags. Going back to the budget Philips pair, another user shared they thought the pair were good value for money. They said: "Nice design, materials with quality in line with the price, it is a good basic product that deserves five stars. "One star less only because at the time of purchase in the description it reported 25 hours of listening but the model selection button reports 50 or 11." Another Amazon customer, however, was not as pleased, writing: "Good sound. However, when it is charged, it cannot be used, and the foam crumbles with use."
