‘The Worst May Be Over': Tsunami Threat Fades In Hawaii, Alaska After Russia Quake

News184 days ago
Tsunami Alert In US: The tsunami warning for Hawaii after an 8.8 earthquake near Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky, Russia, is now an advisory.
The tsunami warning issued for Hawaii following a powerful 8.8-magnitude earthquake off the eastern coast of Russia has been downgraded to an advisory, signaling that the most dangerous threat has likely passed. According to the US National Weather Service, the 'worst part of it" is over with only Northern California currently remaining under any direct tsunami threat.
The massive undersea quake struck near Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky, a remote region in Russia's Far East, and ranks among the ten most powerful earthquakes ever recorded globally. The earthquake triggered a wave of alerts across the Pacific- from Russia's Kuril Islands to the Hawaiian archipelago and the western United States coastline.
Hawaii Breathes A Cautious Sigh Of Relief
Earlier projections warned of waves as high as 10 feet potentially hitting the Hawaiian Islands. While the state braced for impact with mass evacuations and emergency protocols, the actual wave heights turned out to be significantly lower. The tallest wave recorded in Hawaii was measured at 4 feet (1.2 meters) in Haleiwa, on Oahu's north shore, with waves arriving at roughly 12-minute intervals, according to the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center (PTWC).
The downgrade to an advisory has allowed some evacuation orders to be lifted, though authorities are urging residents to remain cautious. The PTWC said, 'Even if the highest waves have passed, strong currents and dangerous conditions can persist for hours."
Tsunami Watches Elsewhere In Pacific
While Hawaii now appears to be in the clear, parts of Alaska's Aleutian Islands and northern California remain under tsunami warnings. The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) continues to monitor wave activity, particularly in areas where the seafloor topography may amplify surges.
Several US coastal regions, including Oregon, Washington and southern California, remain under tsunami advisories, owing to which residents are advised to stay away from beaches, harbors and low-lying coastal infrastructure.
Japan's Massive Precautionary Evacuations
In Japan, memories of the devastating 2011 tsunami loomed large as authorities issued evacuation advisories affecting nearly two million people, primarily in northern and eastern coastal prefectures. Municipalities like Chiba's Inage Beach were cordoned off and evacuation centers were opened as a precaution. So far, no significant damage or casualties have been reported in Japan.

Tamil Nadu: Devotees throng Bhavani river confluence for Aadi perukku

Erode (Tamil Nadu) Aug 3 (PTI) In connection with 'Aadi perukku', thousands of devotees—including newly married couples—visited Kooduthurai, the confluence of the Bhavani, Cauvery, and the mythical Amudha rivers, at Bhavani, around 15 km from Erode, on Sunday. Deeply revered by Tamils, the Cauvery river is worshipped as a goddess, especially on the 18th day of the Tamil month Aadi. The day also marks the start of the sowing season preferred by most farmers. Devotees began arriving at the site as early as 5 am to take a ritual bath in the holy waters. They offered special prayers to the rivers and worshipped Goddess Vedanayagi and Lord Sangameswara. A few performed ancestral rites to honour their forebears. view comments First Published: August 03, 2025, 15:00 IST Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's. Teesta, Jaldhaka rivers in spate as heavy rain lash north Bengal

Kolkata/Jalpaiguri (WB), Aug 3 (PTI) Rivers in northern West Bengal, including the Teesta and Jaldhaka, are in a spate owing to incessant rain that inundated low-lying areas and affected road connectivity to Sikkim and Kalimpong, even as the Met forecast very heavy downpour in the region. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) said that very heavy rain with isolated extremely heavy downpour is likely to occur in the sub-Himalayan districts of the state till Tuesday morning. A landslide at Tarkhola owing to overnight heavy rain has severely affected vehicular movement on the arterial National Highway 10 connecting Sikkim with Siliguri, an official said. While smaller vehicles have been diverted via alternative roads, the movement of heavy vehicles has been temporarily suspended owing to the landslide, he said. A 'yellow warning' (be aware) has been declared at Domohani and Mekhliganj in the vicinity of River Teesta and near National Highway 31, where Jaldhaka flows along it, according to the flood control room at Jalpaiguri city, where incessant rainfall inundated several low-lying areas. Maintaining that heavy rain in Bhutan over the last few days has led to an increased water flow in Jaldhaka River that passes through the Himalayan kingdom and north Bengal, the official said that some areas in Dhupguri block of Jalpaiguri have been flooded. Jalpaiguri received the state's highest rainfall in 24 hours till 8.30 am on Sunday at 159 mm, followed by 152 mm in neighbouring Alipurduar, the IMD data said. Cooch Behar received 93 mm rainfall, while Bagdogra got 75 mm rain during the period, it said. The IMD said that light to moderate rain is likely to occur in all south Bengal districts, including Kolkata, till Tuesday morning.
