‘To create Olympic warriors' – India's new Archery Premier League aims for bull's eye

Indian Express15 hours ago
The myth that India just cannot win an Olympic archery medal, has taken root with each heartbreak and fourth place disappointment at subsequent Games. But the mythology – and separately the history – of India being an ancient land of great archers, however, will provide the inspiration for the Archery Premier League, with the first edition set to kick off on Dasra, the last day of Navratri, October 2, which is also Mahatma Gandhi Jayanti.
Modern-day mental demons of India's finest archers tend to be the performance pressure that drags them down at every Olympics, and it is this mythical beast that the Archery Association of India seeks to prepare them against, through the league.
The 6-team league is expected to run from October 2 – 14, and the likely venue would be the Yamuna Sports Complex. While Dr Joris doesn't disclose the teams which will be announced in coming days, social media activity points to possible franchises from Ranchi, Delhi, Telangana, Chennai, Bangalore and possibly a team from either Maharashtra or Rajasthan to honour the western flank warriors of the country.
The team match will be contested over mixed team duels – each in Recurve and Compound (now an Olympic event) – and a total of 10 days will be devoted to round robin fixtures, with 3 matches per day. Each match will last 20 minutes, and the arrow shooting time has been reduced to 15 seconds from the internationally allotted 20 seconds, 'to pile the pressure and get them used to tension.'
It must be recollected that many big names in Indian archery have wilted in the competition cauldron of Olympics, falling to nerves, even while winning in minimal pressure 'World Cups'. Korea, the world's premier Archery nation is known to simulate pressure tactics for its archers and put them under intense stress, in their domestic competitions. This promises to be a trial by fire, for Indian archers too, as crowds will be encouraged to create a noisy din. 'We want to make the event much faster so that it's a sterner Test,' Dr Ummacherial says.
While Doordarshan will loyally broadcast the league, talks are underway for OTT presentation with JioStar and Sony both.
Teams have been nudged to enlist brand ambassadors, and film stars and famous sportspersons will be unveiled in coming days, aligned to every team. While the doctor didn't divulge any details, a corporate that has been part of Indian archery's journey for many decades, is expected to take up the Ranchi franchise. The other franchise owners are not historically associated with archery.
The inaugural season will see players drafted, and not auctioned, and each squad of 8 members (4 women & 4 men), can have 2 foreign archers on their roster, and are mandated to field 1 of them, amongst the 4 that will make up the team.
An archer ranked in Top 10 in the world stands to earn USD 10,000, while someone that is Top 8 in India, but not Top 20 in world, will earn USD 8000.
A few other rules, not part of international archery, have been included. Besides the shorter drawing and pull time, a shootoff in case of a tie, will have a sudden death, though an extra point will be given for a smack bullseye – besides the inner/outer points system of the concentric rings. The target distances remain 70 metres and 50 metres.
It is also learnt that one point of contention at the ideating stage of the APL was the competition gear of archers. One idea floated was that teams will cosplay and pick a regional, traditional outfit to create the cultural vibe. Archery's technical officials with their sights on the ultimate goal of Olympic medal, though, insisted that archers stick to their international standard competition gear, but could turn up for interviews in ethnic wear, that highlights Indian culture. It's time for mythology to pave the path for the country's top archers to bust myths of their non-medalling and become modern day history-makers.

SC cancels bail of wrestler Sushil Kumar in Chhatrasal Stadium murder case

The Supreme Court on Wednesday cancelled the bail of two-time Olympic medallist Sushil Kumar, the prime accused in the murder of junior national wrestling champion Sagar Dhankar. Kumar had won a bronze medal at the 2008 Beijing Olympics and a silver at the 2012 London Games. (File photo) A bench of justices Sanjay Karol and Prashant Kumar Mishra set aside the March 4 order of the Delhi High Court granting bail to Kumar. Reading out the operative part of the judgment, Justice Karol allowed the petition filed by Sagar's father assailing the bail order. The judge said that Kumar must surrender within one week. Senior counsel Siddharth Mridul represented the deceased's father, Ashok Dhankad, while senior advocate Mahesh Jethmalani appeared for Kumar in the top court. Kumar, along with several others, is accused of assaulting Dhankar and his two friends, Sonu and Amit Kumar, in the parking lot of Delhi's Chhatrasal Stadium on May 4, 2021, allegedly over a property dispute. According to the post-mortem report, Dhankar died of cerebral damage caused by blunt force trauma. The incident sparked a massive manhunt for the Olympian, who evaded arrest for 18 days by moving across Punjab, Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand and Haryana. Delhi Police finally apprehended him in the city's Mundka area when he arrived to collect cash, travelling on a scooty borrowed from a national-level athlete. Following his arrest on May 23, 2021, Kumar was suspended from his Railways job and placed in judicial custody, where he remained until his bail order. In October 2022, a Delhi trial court framed charges against Kumar and 17 co-accused under multiple provisions of the Indian Penal Code (IPC), including murder, rioting, criminal conspiracy, kidnapping, robbery, and offences under the Arms Act. The Delhi Police charge sheet describes Kumar as the 'kingpin' of the conspiracy, alleging that he orchestrated the attack to reassert his influence in the wrestling community after rumours of his waning clout hurt his ego. Kumar has denied these allegations. In his bail plea before the high court, Kumar argued that he had already spent three and a half years in jail and that the trial was unlikely to conclude soon, given that only 31 of the 222 prosecution witnesses had been examined so far. The high court, taking note of the prolonged incarceration and slow pace of the trial, had granted him bail. Kumar had won a bronze medal at the 2008 Beijing Olympics and a silver at the 2012 London Games.

'Matthew Hayden sledged me when I wasn't even part of Indian team': Australia legend was unprovoked but still let it rip

Matthew Hayden played his cricket at a time when the Aussies were near-invincible in world cricket. Hayden made his Australia debut in 1993, but it wasn't until his breakout series against India during the 2001 Border-Gavaskar Trophy that he enhanced his reputation as one of the most feared Test openers in the world and became a legend by the time he finished. In 2004, Hayden did what many thought was impossible – break Brian Lara's previous world record of 375 when be bludgeoned 380 against Zimbabwe. It's another thing that Lara climbed to the top again just later and became the first-ever individual batter to score 400 in Test cricket. Matthew Hayden embodied the ruthless spirit of the Australian cricket team(AFP) After burning up the charts with 549 runs from three Tests, Hayden entered a zone of his own. So much so that when India went to Australia for a return tour in 2003/04, Hayden was one of India's most sought-after wickets. Hayden embodied the spirit of the ruthless Australia of that era, with Aakash Chopra narrating a never-before-heard incident. "One day, Matthew Hayden sledged me even though I wasn't part of the playing XI in that match. I asked him, 'Why are you sledging me? I've just come onto the ground to field'. He asked if the pitch was going to turn. I replied, 'You are the one batting, it's your job to assess the pitch. I'm just here to field and will head back to the dressing room once I'm done'," Chopra said on 'The Cheeky Singles' Show. Matthew Hayden wasn't finished there The former Indian opener revealed that he was once sledged by Hayden even though he wasn't part of the team. While Chopra did not mention the exact series or match, all signs point towards the 2004 series when Australia came to India and beat them 2-1. After scoring 0 and 5 in the series opener at Bengaluru, Chopra was dropped from the second Test in Chennai. He was back for the third match of the series in Nagpur but was axed again in Mumbai after returning scores of 9 and 1. Chopra mentioned Hayden's sledging caught him off guard because it was totally unprovoked. "It was completely unprovoked, but that's the Australian way, it brings the best out of them. Hayden thrives on those moments on the field, and Australians set very high standards. Whatever happens on the ground stays there, and afterwards, they're happy to share a drink," he added.
