A flurry of color fills Nineveh for Yazidi New Year festivities

On Thursday, the Yazidi community celebrated their New Year in an annual ritual with a profound spiritual and cultural character, embodying the uniqueness of this ancient component of the region's social and religious fabric.
This occasion is one of the most prominent holidays for the Yazidis, as they celebrate it with a series of religious and traditional rituals that reflect the depth of their beliefs and traditions passed down through generations.
Idal Jamal, a citizen from Bashiqa, told the Iraqi News Agency (INA): "We gathered today with everyone to celebrate the Yazidi holiday known as (Sari Sal), which is one of our most important religious holidays. Among the rituals of the holiday are hanging roses on doors and decorating eggs with bright colors."
She added, "The holiday is a major religious occasion during which family and relatives meet, visits are made to shrines, and people express their joy on this special occasion."
For his part, Janan Elias, a citizen from Bashiqa, told the Iraqi News Agency (INA), "The Yazidi New Year is one of the most important religious occasions. We celebrate it because it is the day on which we believe the universe was created. We all come together to celebrate amidst nature, where we color eggs with colors derived from green nature and perform special rituals that include prayers and making wishes."
He added, "Our eternal wish is for this holiday to be a holiday of goodness and peace for all Iraqi people, everywhere."
Murad Khairy, a citizen from the Bahzani district, told the Iraqi News Agency (INA), "We celebrate this occasion annually in April. Special events are held to spread a message of love and peace to the world. It is also an opportunity to revive Yazidi heritage and culture, whose roots date back thousands of years."

North Korea's Kim vows 'unconditional support' for Russia's war in Ukraine
INA- SOURCES North Korea has become one of Moscow's main allies during its more than three-year Ukraine offensive, sending thousands of troops and container-loads of weapons to help the Kremlin oust Ukrainian forces from Russia's Kursk border region. Meeting top Russian security official Sergei Shoigu on Wednesday, Kim said that Pyongyang would "unconditionally support the stand of Russia and its foreign policies in all the crucial international political issues including the Ukrainian issue", the Korean Central News Agency reported. Kim "expressed expectation and conviction that Russia would, as ever, surely win victory in the sacred cause of justice", KCNA said. The two sides agreed to "continue to dynamically expand" relations, the state news agency reported. Russia and North Korea signed a sweeping military deal last year, including a mutual defence clause, during a rare visit by Russian leader Vladimir Putin to the nuclear-armed North. Shoigu hailed the deal as "fully meeting the interests of both countries" during a visit in March. Around 600 North Korean soldiers have been killed and thousands more wounded fighting for Russia, according to South Korean lawmaker Lee Seong-kweun, citing the country's intelligence service. North Korea in April confirmed for the first time that it had deployed troops to Russia to support Moscow's war in Ukraine -- and admitted that its troops had been killed in combat. South Korea has also accused the nuclear-armed North of sending significant volumes of weapons, including missiles, to help Russia's war effort. The visit was Shoigu's second to Pyongyang in less than three months. Deepening ties A multilateral sanctions monitoring group including South Korea, the United States, Japan and eight other countries last week condemned ties between Russia and North Korea as "unlawful". According to the group, Russian-flagged cargo vessels delivered as many as "nine million rounds of mixed artillery and multiple rocket launcher ammunition" from North Korea to Russia last year. In return, "Russia is believed to have provided North Korea with air defence equipment and anti-aircraft missiles", it said. The meeting between Kim and Shoigu in Pyongyang came the same day the North's arch-enemy South Korea swore in new president Lee Jae-myung. In a speech upon taking office Wednesday, Lee vowed to reach out to the North -- a marked departure from his hawkish predecessor Yoon Suk Yeol, under whom relations plummeted to their worst level in years. Lee said Seoul would "deter North Korean nuclear and military provocations while opening communication channels and pursuing dialogue and cooperation to build peace on the Korean Peninsula". KCNA reported on Lee's inauguration in a two-line report on Thursday but did not respond to his overtures for talks. It also issued a commentary Thursday slamming French President Emmanuel Macron over "imprudent" comments on Pyongyang's ties with Moscow, calling them "shocking claptrap". The commentary by analyst Choe Ju Hyun took aim at comments by the French leader during the recent Shangri-La Dialogue in Singapore. Macron suggested that the NATO defence alliance could become involved in Asia if China did not do more to press North Korea to stop sending forces to help Russia's war in Ukraine. "It is a mistake if Macron thinks that he can cloak NATO's aggressive and wicked intention to put dirty military shoes on the Asia-Pacific region by taking issue with the DPRK-Russia cooperative relations," the commentary said, referring to North Korea by its official name, the Democratic People's Republic of Korea.

The Iraqi Chemists Syndicate Reveals Details of Iraq's First Participation in the International Chemistry Olympiad
Baghdad – INA The Iraqi Chemists Syndicate revealed on Wednesday the details of Iraq's first participation in the 57th International Chemistry Olympiad (IChO), marking the country's first participation in this global scientific event after a 56-year absence. The head of the Iraqi Chemists Syndicate, Raghad Al-Ajili, told the Iraqi News Agency (INA): "After our success as a syndicate in hosting the 2023 Arab Chemistry Olympiad, a first for Iraq, I decided to participate in the 57th International Chemistry Olympiad. I was able to access information about the 56th International Chemistry Olympiad (IChO) 2024, which was held in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia." She added, "Although registration was closed, I communicated with the organizing bodies through the support of the Iraqi Embassy in Riyadh, especially the Deputy Ambassador, Sadad Faiq, who played a pivotal role in conveying Iraq's voice. She was able to prepare and submit a comprehensive report including the mechanism for selecting outstanding students. This received the approval of the international jury, which granted Iraq a special exemption to participate in the Olympiad." Al-Ajili explained that "Iraq received three exemptions from the Higher Committee of the International Chemistry Olympiad and the jury, composed of 96 countries. These exemptions include direct participation without waiting two years, the inclusion of Iraqi professors in the scientific committee, and the granting of observer status to the Iraqi delegation." Al-Ajili concluded by saying, "I believe in the capabilities of our students, and we will work to raise Iraq's name high. Just as we were the cradle of chemistry through Jabir ibn Hayyan and the Babylonian scientist Tabuti, it is only natural that Iraq will return to the global scientific arena today with strength."

Iraqi national team will wear white to face Korea tomorrow
Baghdad – INA Our national team will wear white tomorrow, Thursday, to face South Korea in the decisive qualifiers for the 2026 World Cup. The Iraqi Football Association said in a statement received by the Iraqi News Agency (INA): "The technical conference for the match between our national team and its South Korean counterpart was held at the Movenpick Hotel in Basra on Wednesday, in the presence of the match supervisor, the referee evaluator, the match media coordinator, and representatives of both teams." He added, "The preparations were reviewed. Our national team will wear white, with the goalkeeper wearing yellow, while the South Korean team will wear red, with its goalkeeper wearing green." He added, "The match will take place at 9:15 PM at Basra International Stadium."
