Earthquake in Turkey kills at least one person and leaves 69 hurt after shock shakes hotels - as travel firms warn holidaymakers to stay calm
At least one person is dead after a huge earthquake measuring 5.8 on the Richter scale rocked Turkey this morning.
The natural disaster struck the town of Marmaris and sent shockwaves though Greece, shaking hotels in holiday hotspots nearby.
The Disaster and Emergency Management Presidency said it started in the Mediterranean Sea at 2.17am.
It was so powerful people were awoken from their sleep in Rhodes.
A 14-year-old girl died following a panic attack and some 69 people were hurt in the Mugla province as they rushed to find safety, including 'some who jumped from a height', Interior Minister Ali Yerlikaya said on X.
There were no initial reports of buildings destroyed in residential areas, he said.
'The quake struck at 2:17 am (2317 GMT on Monday) some 10 kilometres (six miles) off the coast of Marmaris,' the AFAD disaster agency said.
'In Fethiye, a 14-year-old girl named Afranur Gunlu was taken to the hospital due to a panic attack but, unfortunately, despite all interventions, she passed away,' Yerlikaya said.
Fethiyeh lies around 100 kilometres to the east of Marmaris.
Of those injured, 14 were treated at the scene, eight were briefly treated then discharged and another 46 were being treated in hospital, he said.
Many popular seaside resorts are located in Mugla province, including Marmaris, Bodrum and Fethiye, which welcomed 3.7 million foreign visitors in 2024, the Anatolu state news agency said.

Corfu hotel hits back after complaint of 'no English food' or enough chips

Susan Edwards said she had become "sick to death of looking at rice" and refused to book with TUI again after paying for an all-inclusive trip to Corfu where she alleged there wasn't enough chips. The 69-year-old, had jetted off to the Greek island paradise with her two cousins, aged 77 and 78, 50-year-old second cousin and daughter, 30, on the package holiday but she said the vacation was "horrendous" from the minute they arrived. And now the manager of the Lido Corfu Sun, Makis Triantafyllos, has responded, defending the hotel's food offerings. Speaking to The Sun, he defended the menu, saying the food service is "generous and diverse, offering fresh salads, fruits, hot and cold dishes daily". She said: "On a morning you could have toast, a hard boiled egg, or something in sauce. "There was no bacon. For breakfast there was mozzarella and sliced tomatoes. There was no hot bacon or sausage. We got chips one day. One day out of the whole lot. "There was fish, sardines and rice - I was sick to death of looking at rice. There was pasta and salads, none of this was marked (labelled). One night there was a Greek night and they had kebabs, I couldn't eat that. It's the worst holiday I've ever been on." Susan was also shocked by the drinks on offer, with wine, lager, ouzo, or brandy on the menu. She said she couldn't enjoy any drinks, with water setting guests back €1.50 (£1.27). Usually, she explained, she would have a bottled lager or Bacardi and Coke, which she claimed would have cost €9 (£7.60) and come from a different brand.
