Congress opposes special intensive revision of electoral rolls in Bihar
The Congress on Thursday (June 26, 2025) opposed the Election Commission's (EC) decision to undertake a Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of the electoral rolls in Bihar ahead of Assembly elections.
'The INC opposes the devious Special Intensive Revision exercise ordered by the EC for Bihar,' party general secretary (organisation) K.C. Venugopal said in a post on X.
The empowered group of leaders and experts (EAGLE) of the Congress issued a statement saying the move would lead to 'wilful exclusion of voters'.
'The special intensive revision means that the EC will visit every single household and re-enroll every eligible voter in Bihar after a verification of identity and residential documents. In simple terms, the EC wants to discard the current electoral rolls entirely and create a fresh new electoral roll for the State,' said the Congress statement

'But SIR is a devious and dubious idea in the disguise of a solution. Lakhs of union and State government officials will now control and dictate who has correct documents and who doesn't, who gets to vote in the coming Bihar elections, etc. This carries a huge risk of wilful exclusion of voters using the power of the State machinery,' it added.
The statement said the SIR was an 'explicit admission by the EC that all is not well with India's electoral rolls'
'Exactly what the Congress and Leader of the Opposition Rahul Gandhi have been repeatedly pointing out with evidence from Maharashtra,' the statement noted.

"Some people keep the copy of Constitution in their pockets but have other feelings in their hearts," he said in a dig at Congress leader Rahul Gandhi. He said people should be empowered to avoid any situation in the future because an empowered public would never let it happen.

The post alleged that Harjit Kaur and Karanvir had been managing the criminal operations of Bhagwanpuria. Batala deputy superintendent of police Paramveer Singh said both the victims sustained bullet injuries on the face, chest, and stomach. Harjit Kaur was rushed to the local civil hospital from where she was referred to a hospital in Amritsar, but succumbed to the bullet injuries. Karanvir, who is the son of a Punjab Police assistant sub inspector, was declared dead at the Batala civil hospital. The DSP said a case has been registered and teams have been formed to arrest the killers. 'We are investigating the motive behind the incident,' he said. Harjit Kaur, who belongs to Bhagwanpur village, was elected as the sarpanch during the previous Congress regime. She was active in the Congress but before the Dera Baba Nanak assembly byelections last year, she joined the Aam Aadmi Party. In March, gangster Jaggu Bhagwanpuria was detained under the Prevention of Illicit Traffic in Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act (PIT-NDPS) and shifted from Bathinda central jail to Assam's Silchar jail on the recommendation of the Narcotics Control Bureau. Bhagwanpuria was in Punjab Police custody for singer Sidhu Moosewala's murder in Mansa on May 29, 2022. Moosewala was murdered by the Goldy Brar-Lawrence Bishnoi-Jaggu Bhagwanpuria gang to avenge the killing of Youth Akali Dal leader Vikramjit Singh, alias Vicky Middukhera, by the Bambiha gang in Mohali on August 7, 2021. Bhagwanpuria faces 128 criminal cases, including high-profile murders and extortion, besides the Arms Act and 13 under the NDPS Act, since 2012.

Kuldip Nayar's son recalls Emergency: ‘My father was held to scare the press… He paid the price for honesty'
Kuldip Nayar, who passed away in 2018, was one of the country's renowned journalists and human rights activists. He fought fiercely for press freedom during the Emergency imposed by then Prime Minister Indira Gandhi during 1975-77, when fundamental rights, including free speech, were subverted. Nayar was then an editor with The Indian Express. He was also jailed under the Maintenance of Internal Security Act (MISA) for leading a protest against the excesses of the administration. In an interview with The Indian Express, Nayar's son Rajiv Nayar, a senior advocate, recalls the night of his father's arrest, shining light on his work. Excerpts: What happened during the night of Kuldip Nayar's arrest? Were you aware that your father was going to be put behind bars? My father knew from some sources that he was going to be arrested. He did not know the exact date, but he knew it was going to happen soon. We were at Malcha Marg (in Delhi) at that time and we saw some people in plain clothes deputed outside our house… We knew that it was imminent. Could you talk about your father's work during the Emergency? Even when he was released, he kept on writing articles criticising the government. He was arrested only to make an example to scare the press. Nobody else wrote like he was writing. He paid the price for being honest and independent. Why do you think the government released Kuldip Nayar from jail before the high court's judgment came? When the judgment was reserved and the government got an idea that the judgment is going against them, they tried to make it infructuous by saying that they had already released him. The judgment was still pronounced. That is why the judges paid the price – the junior judge was demoted and the senior judge was transferred. What happened to all the high court judges who gave rulings against the government during the Emergency? Most of them were transferred from one state to another. How was your father's experience in jail? He got used to it, I think. I used to take food for him whenever I used to meet him. He was not harassed at all, and had a very good time. In fact, he also made a lot of friends. But, of course, the comfort and luxury of home was missing. My grandfather (who was also arrested during the Emergency) and my father were in the jail at the same time for one night. He used to always recall that this surprised him a lot. Your father broke the news in January 1977 that the government was going to call fresh elections… I think he got the tip from a very senior Congress leader. I am not entirely sure, but this is what I was told.
