Holiday destination is 'better' than Thailand with friendlier locals and crystal clear waters

Daily Record15-05-2025
Another Asian country is made up of more than 7,000 islands and, like Thailand, it has beautiful beaches, friendly locals and plenty of things to do
There's a country that some holidaymakers reckon is "better" for tourists than Thailand, despite receiving significantly fewer visitors. Thailand is a top choice for Brits, particularly backpackers and those seeking a cultural and nature-filled trip.
However, other Asian countries offer stunning beaches, friendly locals and exciting activities that might be even more worthwhile. The Philippines, also in South East Asia, comprises over 7,000 islands boasting breathtaking coastal views, highly-rated hikes and nature experiences, and plenty more for tourists to enjoy.

Plus, it offers cheaper food prices than Thailand, according to Travel Authentic Asia.

As per travel insurance providers Pacific Prime, the Philippines welcomes under 10 million tourists annually, a figure dwarfed by Thailand's 40 million. With Thailand often considered pricier, tourists are turning to the Philippines as an alternative Asian holiday destination.
Comparing Thailand to the Philippines can be challenging as both are culturally unique. However, many tourists visit these countries for similar reasons, such as their beaches, seaside resorts, forests, wildlife and nightlife, reports the Express.
One blogger who is an avid traveller in the Philippines, and goes by the moniker Island Hopping the Philippines online, stated that after years of living in Thailand, they find the Philippines "so much better".
They expressed their admiration for the archipelago, saying: "The Philippines has 7,000 beach paradise islands. It just never stops. You could pick some random corner of the country and bask the remainder of your life in paradise."
Travel enthusiasts are weighing in on the debate over whether the Philippines or Thailand takes the crown as the leading Southeast Asian destination.

Sharing their experiences on TripAdvisor, one user highlighted the friendliness of Filipino hospitality: "Filipinos are arguably friendlier than Thais and overall (with the exception of Boracay and sometimes El Nido and Panglao Island/Bohol Island - Alona Beach) Philippines is far less crowded and touristy than visitor-heavy Thailand."
Commenting on the allure of seaside locations, another traveller remarked: "Beaches are better in the Philippines than in Thailand, and it's not just Boracay."

Adding to the conversation on YouTube, Fonsi Abroad praised the pristine beaches of the Philippines, noting that its beaches with crystal clear waters and white sand will "blow your mind". Likewise, a duo that runs the Jumping Places channel on YouTube echoed this sentiment, asserting the superior quality of Philippine beaches.
Despite the Philippines' praise, there remains support for Thailand's travel experience. Advocates for Thailand underscore its well-established tourist infrastructure and mainland geography, which simplifies travel by car, bus, or train, unlike the Philippines where more flying is necessary due to its scattered island composition.
While island-hopping in the Philippines can be pricey, Travel Authentic Asia suggests that parts of Thailand often provide more affordable accommodation options. For British travellers, Thailand is also more accessible, with flights from London to Bangkok taking approximately 11 hours and 40 minutes, compared to nearly 16 hours to reach Manila, the Filipino capital.

Nature enthusiasts flock to the Philippines for its stunning beaches, forests, and mountains. The top-rated attraction, White Beach, is hailed as an "island paradise" by Tripadvisor reviewers.
Other must-visit spots include El Nido Beach, Kayangan Lake, Puerto Princesa Underground River, Big Lagoon, and the Chocolate Hills Natural Monument.
Manila, the capital city, offers a diverse range of activities for tourists, including exploring the historic Instramuros district, visiting Fort Santiago, strolling through Rizal Park, and discovering the National Museum.

Brits travelling to Spain urged to take 'extreme precautions' on holiday

Spain has been hit by a heatwave with the mercury hitting 32C in Seville this week and highs of 35C in Madrid and 31C in Barcelona. The UK has also been issued a yellow heat health warning Holidaymakers heading to Spain have been urged to take "extreme precautions" as the country swelters under blistering heat that will leave Brits reeling. Temperatures have soared to 32C in Seville this week, with Madrid hitting highs of 35C and Barcelona reaching 31C. ‌ Summer in Spain always sounds like a great idea, but with the temperatures reaching the 35C mark, holidaymakers wishing to spend a couple of days in the hot peninsula might want to be careful. ‌ Spain's State Meteorological Agency (AEMET), equivalent to Britain's Met Office, warned: "The danger of wildfires continues at very high or extreme levels in most of Spain, despite the likelihood of showers in many areas. We are at the most critical moment of the season. Take extreme precautions." In other travel news, it comes after a warning to Brit tourists planning all-inclusive holidays to Spain. ‌ READ MORE: Beautiful seaside town in Devon that's so pretty it 'could be from a postcard' The country has issued a rare "red" emergency alert with the "maximum" threat facing UK tourists, reports Birmingham Live. AEMET posted on X: "11/08 11:36 Active warnings today and tomorrow in Spain for maximum temperatures, storms, rain, and suspended dust. Maximum warning level: red. This, combined with the high level of sunshine typical of summer, is causing temperatures to be higher than usual for this time of year, resulting in a heat wave." "[Today, Monday] temperatures are expected to rise further in the Ebro basin, the southern and eastern thirds of the Iberian Peninsula, and the eastern Cantabrian Sea. Temperatures will begin to fall in the northwest, most noticeably in Galicia." It continued: "Temperatures will therefore continue to reach 37-39C across the interior of the Iberian Peninsula, also extending to the Júcar and Segura regions and the interior of the Basque Country, where temperatures could even exceed 40C locally." "In the lower Guadalquivir, highs could reach over 42C, and although with low probability, this threshold could also be exceeded in the Ebro Valley and the northeastern depressions, where this day is expected to be the hottest of the episode." Meanwhile, a yellow heat health warning has been issued for the UK as most areas have seen the mercury soar past 30C. This is the fourth summer heatwave, with England, Scotland, Wales, and Northern Ireland all experiencing blistering temperatures. A number of water companies were compelled to impose hosepipe bans for activities such as watering gardens, washing cars and filling paddling pools.

'I live in a £3m party pad on an island you can only reach by boat or helicopter'

Eight years ago tech entrepreneur Mike Conner bought a dilapidated fort on a remote Welsh island and began an epic restoration project to turn it into a unique home that's now for up for sale. If the idea of complete solitude, away from the hustle and bustle, with only the sound of crashing waves, chirping birds and stunning sea views as your backdrop sounds like heaven, then private island life is for you. Oh, and you'll need a cool £3million to secure it. ‌ Thorne Island, accessible only by boat from the Pembrokeshire mainland or via helicopter, thanks to a handy helipad, is one of Wales ' most extraordinary locations. It's now on the market for offers over £3m. ‌ The island is dominated by an impressive fort, which one man has spent years and over £2m of his own money restoring. This historic Grade II defensive building has been transformed into a home and potential business venture. With no neighbours in sight, it could also be the ultimate party pad. ‌ Thorne Island fort was initially constructed during the 1850s, forming part of a dozen fortifications erected around Pembroke Dock's entrance as "Palmerston's Haven defences" to ward off potential Napoleonic attacks. However, in 2017 the historic Welsh structure was stumbled upon by a restoration enthusiast who had a grand vision for the island. Businessman Mike Conner, now 52, took the leap to resurrect the island and fort after spotting it in a YouTube clip. Despite the challenges, he remained undeterred in his mission to save the fort from ruin and transform it into one of Wales' most remarkable homes, employing a team of local tradespeople, boat companies and specialist craftspeople over many years. Eight years on from purchasing it, the fort has become a unique dwelling and arguably one of the most intricate and ambitious renovation projects undertaken in Wales, if not the UK. ‌ Among the hurdles was the significant problem of how to deliver supplies and equipment for the works. But Mr Conner had a solution. Over just two days, 350 helicopter trips were made, airlifting everything onto the island. Inside the fort, there are bright and spacious rooms, wood-burning stoves, mezzanine bedrooms with spiral staircases, and luxurious new bathroom facilities - a modern and comfortable space that feels worlds away from how it looked when the project commenced. ‌ ‌ The impressive 8,000 square feet of living space includes a bespoke rooftop bar offering incredible views overlooking St Ann's Head, and an internal courtyard that's perfect for hosting unforgettable parties. ‌ Guests can arrive in true James Bond or Agatha Christie style, flying in via helicopter or arriving by boat, and then party into the night without worrying about disturbing neighbours or dealing with uninvited guests. There's ample room for overnight guests too, as the fort currently has five bedrooms. However, bedroom two, formerly the soldiers' barracks, is a long and spacious room that can accommodate many people. ‌ The property also features a large kitchen diner and family area, a spacious lounge and dining room, and numerous shower rooms and cloakrooms. There are plenty of storage rooms, a mezzanine level, a workshop, and a boiler room as well. ‌ The fort is listed, so no walls can be removed, but there are numerous rooms and spaces that can be tailored to suit the new owner's desires - fewer bedrooms and more reception space, or perhaps a massive gym once the equipment has been brought in, a huge banqueting hall - the possibilities are endless. Mike adds that there's another unique aspect to living at Thorne Island, besides its history, structure and location - it offers absolute silence from man-made noise and disruption, surrounded by breath-taking 360-degree views and plenty of opportunities for exploration on land and sea. ‌ Following the years of graft and the many obstacles that Mike faced - challenges unique to this extraordinary renovation - a fresh owner can now relish the island without enduring the strain of such an epic undertaking; though routine maintenance checks against the elements will be essential to preserve his remarkable efforts. Spanning from 2017 to 2025, Mike has accomplished something genuinely extraordinary, though he occasionally overlooks this feat, reflecting: "The trouble is, with something this big, you never really stand back and see what you've achieved, so it's nice to see how far we've come when I watch the original YouTube video back." The estate agent marketing the island and fortress explains that the £3m property boasts a commanding position at the gateway to one of Britain's most expansive natural harbours, presenting itself as a striking and genuinely one-of-a-kind residence. The island holds registration as a Hotel and Premises (VOA Business Rates), meaning the estate agent highlights the property's versatility for everything from private living to commercial enterprises. Available for offers exceeding £3m, those interested in Thorne Island can contact Strutt and Parker on 07826 672139.
