Cape Breton man spent a year searching for his son. On Sunday, he found another missing man

A North Sydney, N.S., man who spent more than 300 days searching for his own son helped find another young man who went missing in the woods over the weekend.
Ken MacDonald, whose son Justin MacDonald disappeared in July 2024, searched 180 places, including shorelines, swamps, forests and gravel pits. MacDonald found his son's remains in May in a wooded area near Sydney, N.S., after coming across a familiar-looking shirt and sandal.
After attending church on Sunday, Ken MacDonald spotted a social media post that tugged at his heart strings. A 22-year-old man was missing after heading out to a Glace Bay, N.S., bar the night before.
"I had to help because I know what it feels like," said Ken MacDonald.
"I know the feelings and emotions that they're probably experiencing and I just felt like maybe I could help them and find a better outcome."
Cape Breton Regional Police believe Justin MacDonald's death was a homicide. Three people face charges.
On Sunday afternoon, Ken MacDonald went to Glace Bay and checked in with Cape Breton Search and Rescue, which was scouring the area where the man was last spotted. MacDonald said he knew many of the trails in the area as he had searched them before looking for his son.
MacDonald asked if he could share a video about the missing man to his Facebook page — which he posted — and later spoke with the man's mother.
"We had a moment and I just told her to just keep the faith, keep praying," said MacDonald. "I said, 'Look, there's a lot of people here.'
MacDonald and his friend, Steve Nugent, then began searching an area between Sydney and Glace Bay. Several hours after arriving on site, MacDonald said something caught his eye.
"Two small little yellow birds flew in front of me and I said to Steve, I said, 'Justin's with me,'" said MacDonald.
About five minutes later, the two searchers found the missing man walking along the Old Airport Road near Sydney. He was tired and disoriented but otherwise fine.
"I don't know how things come together, but it was just a really good feeling that he was safe," said MacDonald.
"We were able to put him in the back seat of the car, and called the cops, and called his mother and told her we were on our way back with him. It felt like a win. The guy is safe. And it just felt really, really good."

RCMP release photo of white car that could have a connection with P.E.I. shooting

Social Sharing RCMP have released a photo of a car they say "may be connected" to an incident in western P.E.I. that killed a man and injured a Summerside woman who later died in hospital. "The vehicle is a white 2007 Honda Accord, 4-door sedan, [and] could have had PEI licence plate 202NX," the police force said in a news release late Wednesday. The news release did not say whether the car is believed to be connected to the perpetrator or to a possible witness. RCMP are once more issuing an appeal for anyone with information about what happened around 8 p.m. Friday on Hackmatack Road in Urbainville, near Wellington, to come forward to talk to investigators. They have said a targeted shooting into a car on a dirt section of the road killed a 35-year-old man who was believed to be driving a 2008 Toyota Corolla, and led the car to roll over and hit a utility pole. The female passenger, 50, was seriously injured in the crash and later died. Police have said they believe another vehicle was on Hackmatack Road at the time, and a perpetrator fled the scene. No arrests have been made. "These incidents are uncommon in our province, and they are certainly unsettling. We take this very seriously and extensive police resources have been deployed to this investigation," Cpl. Gavin Moore, the media relations officer for the P.E.I. RCMP, said at a media briefing Monday. "Police do have many leads to investigate." RCMP have not identified either of the dead people. Police are asking anyone with information about the incident to contact Prince District RCMP at 902-853-9300 or 902-436-9300. People who want to stay anonymous are asked to call P.E.I. Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS (8477).

RCMP widen search in P.E.I. car-shooting incident with underwater recovery team

Social Sharing P.E.I. RCMP say their Underwater Recovery Team has been added to the investigation into an incident in western P.E.I. last week that killed a man and injured a Summerside woman, who later died in hospital. In a news release Friday morning, RCMP said the team was deployed Thursday to search waters around the Island, including lakes, ponds, streams, and coastal areas. The team is a specialized RCMP unit made up of police officers who are trained divers. They focus on recovering evidence and bodies from aquatic environments, playing a crucial role in investigations involving submerged victims or evidence, the release said. Cpl. Ellen Peters, media relations officer for the P.E.I. RCMP, said the Underwater Recovery Team expands the scope of the search. "We're using police dog services, drones and officers with boots on the ground to search the land areas, and now we are adding the ability to search lakes, ponds, streams and into the ocean if needed to find evidence that may contribute to this investigation," Peters was quoted as saying in the release. The incident occurred around 8 p.m. on Friday, Aug. 8, on Hackmatack Road in Urbainville, near Wellington. Police have said the targeted shooting into a car on a dirt section of the road killed a 35-year-old man, believed to be the driver of the 2008 Toyota Corolla. The car then rolled over and hit a utility pole. A female passenger from Summerside, 50, was seriously injured in the crash and later died. Police have said they believe another vehicle was on Hackmatack Road at the time, and a perpetrator fled the scene. On Wednesday, RCMP released a photo of a car they say "may be connected" to the incident. The vehicle is a white, four-door 2007 Honda Accord, and could have the P.E.I. licence plate 202NX, the police force said. No arrests have been made. Police have not named a suspect in the case. RCMP have not identified either of the victims. Police are asking anyone with information about the incident or the vehicle to contact Prince District RCMP at 902-853-9300 or 902-436-9300. People who want to stay anonymous are asked to call P.E.I. Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS (8477).
