Rivalry between co-captains in Malaysian badminton team

KUALA LUMPUR: They are co-captains, and they are rivals.
While Datu Anif Isaac Datu Asrah and Noraqilah Maisarah Ramdan will jointly lead Malaysia at the Badminton Asia Junior Championships (BAJC) in Surakarta, Indonesia — they also compete for the mixed doubles spot in the team event.
The BAJC begins with the mixed team event from July 18-22, followed by the individual competition from July 23-27.
Anif, 18, partners Dania Sofea Zaidi, while Noraqilah, also 18, partners Loh Ziheng.
Both pairs are Malaysia's top contenders for the individual mixed doubles
gold, and they are also vying for the only slot available in the team event.
"It's a good fight between us. We train under the same coach and have similar playing styles.
"It comes down to who performs better on the day," said Noraqilah.
The selection headache now falls on the coaches.
However, Ziheng-Noraqilah have recorded two victories over Anif-Dania this year - at the National Under-18 Championships in April and Malaysia Junior International Challenge two weeks ago.
Despite the rivalry, both captains are approaching their dual roles with maturity.
"As a team, we stand together, we fall together," said Anif today.
Noraqilah added: "Anif and I now have a bigger responsibility,"
Though the pairs train together daily and know each other's game inside out, both players insist that the internal competition only drives them to improve.
"Winning or losing against each other is secondary," said Noraqilah.
"The important thing is that we push ourselves."
Both have agreed to leave selection matters to the coaches. "We'll just follow the instructions. The coaches know best, so we must always be ready," said Anif.
Malaysia have been drawn in Group B for the mixed team event, alongside hosts Indonesia, Singapore, Myanmar and Macau.

Give Jonassen time to produce champions, says Hannah Yeoh

YOUTH and Sports Minister Hannah Yeoh has urged stakeholders to allow national singles coaching director Kenneth Jonassen sufficient time to revitalise Malaysia's badminton squad following their underwhelming display at the 2025 Badminton Asia Junior Championships (BAJC). She emphasised that the ministry has provided full support to the Badminton Association of Malaysia (BAM) to strengthen the singles division under Jonassen's leadership. 'The new coach has just arrived and has yet to warm his seat to assess their performance properly. So, I feel that he deserves to be given time to evaluate their performance, and produce champions... this is something that cannot be achieved in a month or two,' she said during the closing ceremony of the 2025 Malaysian Women's Amateur Open golf championships at Templer Park Country Club. Hannah's remarks follow concerns raised by national badminton legend Datuk Seri Lee Chong Wei, who cautioned against placing excessive short-term expectations on Jonassen, who joined Akademi Badminton Malaysia (ABM) less than a year ago. Former national coach Wong Tat Meng also warned of a looming crisis in Malaysia's singles badminton development after junior shuttlers exited early in BAJC 2025, which concluded on July 27. - Bernama

Give Jonassen Time To Produce Champions

RAWANG, July 31 (Bernama) -- Youth and Sports Minister Hannah Yeoh has called on all parties to give national singles coaching director Kenneth Jonassen the space and time to get the shuttlers firing again following their lacklustre performance in the 2025 Badminton Asia Junior Championships (BAJC) recently. She said the ministry believes that it has channelled all the necessary support to the Badminton Association of Malaysia (BAM) to ensure the 51-year-old coach can help improve the singles department. 'The new coach has just arrived and has yet to warm his seat to assess their performance properly. So, I feel that he deserves to be given time to evaluate their performance, and produce champions… this is something that cannot be achieved in a month or two.

Lee Chong Wei backs Jonassen to rebuild Malaysia's badminton singles squad

NATIONAL badminton legend Datuk Seri Lee Chong Wei has called for patience as coach Kenneth Jonassen works to rebuild Malaysia's struggling men's singles squad. Jonassen, who took over as national men's singles coach and Director of Singles Coaching at the Badminton Association of Malaysia (ABM) six months ago, needs time to implement his plans effectively. Lee stressed that expecting immediate results would be unrealistic. 'I've met and spoken with him about how he can contribute to men's singles in Malaysia. He has great ideas, and I agree with his proposals and plans. We just can't expect instant results because this isn't a one-month or one-year process,' he said. The former world number one highlighted that at least one full four-year cycle is needed to assess Jonassen's impact. 'Give him room to adapt to the local culture and to rebuild the team. It's like a newborn child – even learning to walk takes a year, let alone producing a world champion,' Lee added. His comments came after receiving the Darjah Gemilang Pangkuan Negeri (DGPN) award from Penang Governor Tun Ramli Ngah Talib. Lee also addressed concerns raised by former national coach Wong Tat Meng, who warned of a potential singles crisis due to weak youth development. Malaysia's junior squad recently underperformed at the 2025 Badminton Asia Junior Championships in Solo, Indonesia. Lee acknowledged the worrying state of men's singles, with only Lee Zii Jia showing promise after recovering from injury, while Ng Tze Yong remains in treatment. 'We only have Lee Zii Jia, who's just recovered from injury, and Ng Tze Yong, who is still undergoing treatment in Doha. Their performances are still inconsistent, and the same goes for Leong Jun Hao, whose form has been up and down,' he said. - Bernama
