What viral ‘tinfoil Wi-Fi boost' hack is REALLY doing to your internet connection as expert issues warning
HOUSEHOLDS have been urged to avoid a viral 'tinfoil' trick that is claimed to boost Wi-Fi performance.
In a last-ditch attempt to boost their internet speeds, web surfers could be slowing it down instead.
In clips viewed nearly 60 million times on social media, people have been encouraging others to place a sheet of tinfoil behind their Wi-Fi router, according to Uswitch.
The theory is that it will redirect scattered Wi-Fi signals back into the router to improve the connection.
That way, the signals don't get lost or dispersed.
It is similar to how a satellite dish functions.
But Richard Dowden, Uswitch's broadband expert, warns that any benefit of the bizarre 'hack' will be small.
'The tinfoil hack could make a tiny difference, as it will cause the Wi-Fi radio waves to be more narrowly focused," he explained.
"However, the downside is that the tinfoil may block the Wi-Fi from going behind it, causing more problems."
It can be easy to give into frustration, and turn to unusual methods of fixing a sluggish Wi-Fi.
But it's best to opt for tried-and-tested speed-boosting tricks, like keeping your router in an elevated space.
'If you're concerned about Wi-Fi strength, try repositioning your router and running a speed test in different areas of your home to find the optimal spot," added Dowden.
'For the best broadband performance, place your router in a central location, elevated off the ground, and on a flat, open surface.
"Avoid hiding it in enclosed spaces like cupboards or placing it near large obstructions like TVs or bookshelves."
Wi-Fi boosters or extenders are another good option.
These are gadgets that pick up the Wi-Fi signals from your router and spit them out further into the home.
'If your connection is still lagging, consider investing in a Wi-Fi booster or extender - it's a far more reliable solution than tinfoil, which is best left in the kitchen," Dowden continued.
'However, if you're finding your broadband continues to have frequent interruptions, it might be time to consider switching providers to find the one best suited to your needs.'

Two vital steps to take every time you download an app onto your phone
Lee Elliott, chief product officer at Compare and Recycle, has shared some vital advice for those who use their phones to download new apps Mobile users have been cautioned to exercise vigilance when downloading apps onto their devices, with the number of necessary updates on the rise and services often reliant on apps. Lee Elliott, chief product officer at Compare and Recycle, has come forward with expert advice to keep mobile phones secure from malware threats. Highlighting essential precautions, he advised: "Before installing an app from the App Store or Google Play, always ensure it is a verified app and pay attention to its reviews." But he also stressed the importance of keeping apps up-to-date, saying that regular updates and security patches are crucial for safety. The risks associated with malware infections on your device could compromise personal data and banking apps, potentially leading to identity theft, Elliott warned, reports the Express. There are several warning signs to be aware of which may signal a malware infection: unexpected texts or calls, unwelcome pop ups, an overheating device, or rapid battery depletion. Other red flags include sluggish page loading, disruption during internet browsing, or observing an unusual increase in data consumption. In a situation where you believe your phone may be infected, Elliott instructs: "If you suspect your device has been infected, the first port of call is to turn off your mobile data or Wi-Fi, and uninstall any suspicious apps you can identify. "You could also perform a factory reset. On Android phones you can run a built-in scan to search for malware and resolve the issue, but due to the OS architecture out of the box, iPhones are well protected and are not generally susceptible to security breaches, so if you're experiencing any strange pop-ups as an Apple user try clearing your browsing history and cache first, and it'll likely solve the problem." He also offered some additional advice to avoid becoming a target, such as steering clear of public Wi-Fi connections and rejecting any suspicious Bluetooth pairing requests when out and about. The Met Police recently issued a warning for people to be vigilant following a surge in phone thefts where audacious thieves snatch a phone straight from someone's hand. Mr Elliott provided a tip to limit the impact should your device be nicked. He said: "While staying aware of your surroundings is the least you can do to stop your phone being snatched in the first place, there are simple steps you can take to protect yourself and prevent the worst from happening. "A lesser-known trick for iPhone users is to disable Control Centre access from the lock screen - this prevents thieves from quickly switching off Wi-Fi or turning on Airplane Mode if they grab your phone while it's locked, helping you retain the ability to track the device via Find My iPhone and making them more likely to let go of the device. "Simply navigate to 'Face ID & Passcode' in settings and toggle off the option for accessing your control centre when the phone is locked." He also urged iPhone owners to switch on Stolen Device Protection to toughen it up for crooks trying to mess with your account security settings. For an additional layer of safeguarding, consider using eSIM as physical SIMs can be plucked out from your gadget to take it off the grid, while keeping your device online lets you utilise its tracking capabilities.

'Fantastic quality' subscription free video doorbell drops from £100 to £60
"All good so far, have used three other makes and this is much better." Amazon is currently holding a limited time sale on all shoppers' must-have products, from technology to bundle buys of protein bars and washing up pods. In the midst of the massive sale, there are some cracking deals available on video doorbells. These gadgets have been gaining popularity over recent years as they allow homeowners to keep an eye on their house while they are away. They also give the ability to talk to whoever does grace their doorstep, whether it be family or a delivery worker. However, while these deals may seem great, many popular video doorbells - such as Blink and Ring - come with the caveat of shoppers having to join a subscription service after 30 days in order to access all the features. This can become frustrating as shoppers have already spent a decent bit of money on the device. In order to combat this, Amazon has also reduced the price of a few video doorbells that don't require a subscription fee. One of which is the eufy Security Video Doorbell Wireless C210 which usually retails for £99.99. However, for a limited time only, shoppers can snatch this gadget up for £59.99. Shoppers will get a crisp 1080p-grade view of anyone who approaches their home with the eufy doorbell. With an advanced WDR and a 4:3 aspect ratio, this device ensures users get a colour-accurate, head-to-toe image every time. Boasting a battery life of 120 days on a single charge, the doorbell also comes with a Wi-Fi chime which will let everyone at home know when someone is at the door. The security gadget is also said to only take minutes to set up as it doesn't require any complicated wires. eufy Security Video Doorbell Wireless C210 Product Description Through the eufy app, shoppers will be able to receive facial snapshot notifications, customise a detection zone to reduce the amount of false alarms and speak to whoever approaches the front door in real time. All of this without having to pay a subscription. Alternatively, for people who are happy to pay a subscription for a more well known brand, Amazon has also reduced the price of the Ring Battery Video Doorbell (2024 release). Normally retailing for £99.99, shoppers can now grab this popular device for £59 in a limited time deal. However, Argos is also selling a subscription free video doorbell for their lowest price. The TP-Link Tapo D210 2K Video Doorbell Battery comes with a chime device and is retailing for £44.99. With a 180 day battery life, this gadget has a IP65 weatherproof rating and can provide a 160 degree ultra wide view. For those interested in the eufy Video Doorbell, it currently has a 4.2 star rating from over 5,000 shoppers. While it is currently one of Amazon's top choices, over 500 people have also bought the device in the last month. One five-star reviewer said: "Clear viewing, easy to install, seem a sturdy built item & picks up anyone approaching the door plus it enables communication when needed." With another adding: "All good so far, have used three other makes and this is much better. Wider image, face capture, quicker response to movement and seems to have longer battery life, biggest plus is free sd storage on plug in doorbell, no more paying out every month." However, one shopper cautioned that the device doesn't seem to work as well when used with mobile data. They said: "The camera itself is excellent—good resolution, solid battery life, and generally reliable… unless you're on mobile data. "If you're using a 5G mobile network, you may find that live view and notifications won't connect unless you're on Wi-Fi or using a VPN. This is because Eufy's system uses P2P streaming, which fails under modern CG-NAT mobile networks (standard on most UK and EU carriers)." Another shopper also grumbled about the battery life: "Ok to start with. Never had one so nothing to compare it to. Listed as 120day battery. Never got that but maybe half. (Low traffic area in a cul-de-sac) after 18months it needs charging every 10 days or so. "Image quality isn't great but we have CCTV if needed. Cheap enough but probably wouldn't buy again. Next time I'll pay a bit more and hopefully get something that stands the test of time. For the price, not bad." On the flip side, a happy shopper added: "Quick delivery! Easy to use and setup. The quality of the camera is great even at night. Sound is also great! Connects to the WiFi, no subscription fees either. So far impressed! Have recommended to family and friends!" While a further customer praised: "We switched our whole security system over to eufy and we are blown away by the quality of the images as well as the usability of the app accompanying it. "The doorbell camera is fantastic quality in both daytime and nighttime. The app has free storage option and is quick to bring up events it has captured. Overall we have been pleasantly surprised by it!" For those who want to buy the eufy Security Video Doorbell Wireless C210, click HERE. Join the Daily Record WhatsApp community!
