Gordon McQueen's daughter Hayley's turmoil as wait for death certificate passes 18 months

Hayley McQueen's father, former Manchester United and Scotland defender, Gordon, sadly passed away in 2023 – but his family are still waiting for his death certificate
Sky Sports presenter Hayley McQueen has disclosed that she is yet to receive her father Gordon's death certificate.
McQueen, 45, shared the sad news of her father's passing at age 70 in June 2023. Gordon was a cherished figure in football with noteworthy stints at Manchester United, Leeds United and St Mirren while also representing Scotland on the international stage on 30 occasions.

He had been diagnosed with vascular dementia two-years prior to his passing. Earlier this year, it was made public that Northallerton Coroners Court would hold an inquest into McQueen's death to look into possible connections with heading the ball during his professional career.

The inquest is also aimed to explore the number of goals resulted from headers he contributed during his career. Hayley and her family have previously indicated their concern that regularly heading footballs could have contributed to his dementia.
Five months since the inquest announcement, Hayley expressed on the Ainslie + Ainslie Performance People podcast that they are still awaiting a death certificate. When asked about it, McQueen said: "Yes. We are still waiting for the cause of death and whether it's ruled as industrial disease."
Hayley sought the expertise of Professor William Stewart, who played a significant role in the 2021 parliamentary review into the link between sports and long-term brain injuries, and offered her father's brain for medical examination shortly after he died. She added: "I was in contact with him (Professor Stewart) before and we discussed a few things.
"I'd had to get quite matter-of-fact about things, but I was like 'Oh, my dad does want to donate his brain to medical science.' We did that privately, but our local coroner decided that he wanted to open an inquest because on my Dad's death certificate – well he doesn't have a death certificate – the interim cause of death, when you're issued a certificate to handle banking issues and such, was listed as pneumonia.
"My dad did not die from pneumonia. He was bed bound and due to the liquid intake, it was a complication. Eventually, that took him."

Hayley elaborated on what Professor Stewart discovered, stating: "Everything points towards the heading of the football. There is CTE (Chronic Traumatic Encephalopathy) that professor Willie Stewart found. He's just the most wonderful and incredible man, and he sat with us and broke down everything in the post-mortem."
In 2019, the Football Association and the Professional Footballers' Association conducted their own study and concluded that former football players are three-and-a-half times more likely to die from degenerative brain diseases.
Regarding the inquest into McQueen's death, the brief hearing stated that they could not set a date, as they were unable to find his medical records between 1972 and 1995. Coroner Jon Heath said he would need to locate the records from that time period before they could proceed.
The timetable for the inquest remains unclear, but following her discussion with Professor Stewart, Hayley and her family are now more resolved than ever to uncover further details surrounding the death. She said: "It spurred us on. We were like 'Okay, we're going to fight this fight.' We haven't done it for any kind of litigation, we just want information.
"I would love to know that, if they think it was from the heading of the football, that the information was really powerful, to make the authorities and people in football really start to pay attention to the fact that you can get brain damage from heading a football."

Alejandro Garnacho transfer odds: Chelsea and Tottenham in mix for Man Utd star

ALEJANDRO GARNACHO is on his way out of Manchester United after being told to find a new club. And despite Chelsea and Tottenham being in the mix for the winger, it's looking like a move abroad is most likely, according to the bookmaker odds. Reports have claimed United boss Ruben Amorim axed the Argentine in a brutal public dressing down in front of his teammates. Garnacho was unhappy with Amorim's decision to leave him out of the Europa League final that saw Man Utd losing to Spurs. He then slammed the Red Devils' "s*** season" before his brother lashed out on social media by claiming the club "threw him under the bus." Following that, it later emerged that Garnacho and Amorim's relationship had completely broken down. But he was used from the start in the club's second game in their post-season trip against Hong Kong, after seemingly being involved in a fan altercation. And United would demand around £60million to let the Argentine leave, reports claimed. It looks like his time at Old Trafford - and potentially in English football - is over, with a move abroad looking most likely. Napoli are the warm favourites to sign Garnacho and are priced at Evens with bet365. The Serie A champions have been linked with several big money moves as they look to defend their title and make a splash in the Champions League. Atletico Madrid are joined by Chelsea at 6/1, with the latter already strongly linked with Garnacho back in January. Staying at United is a bigger price still at 8/1, despite still having three years left on his current deal. Milan at 10/1 are just ahead of 12/1 Spurs, who are also looking to strengthen to compete better in the league whilst also making a go of things in the Champions League. Leverkusen and Aston Villa are both 14/1. Rangers takeover complete as 49ers Enterprises seal deal

A statement confirmed the consortium was looking for a controlling stake while sources close to the deal told how it would likely be complete by June. A major player in the deal has been Paraag Marathe, president of 49ers Enterprises and chairman of Leeds United, the newly promoted English Premier League side also part of the 49ers group. American health tycoon Andrew Cavenagh is part of the consortium and has been at Ibrox more than once in the intervening period. Read more: Rangers announce 13 academy departures including trio with first-team exposure Ajax star on how Rangers-linked Francesco Farioli compares to Arne Slot The deal has now been completed with an announcement made today as Rangers enter into a new era. Andrew Cavenagh told the Gers website: "We are deeply grateful for the trust placed in us by the Rangers Board, shareholders, staff, and supporters. This club's history and traditions speak for themselves, but history doesn't win matches. "We know that the true way to honour the club's heritage will be to drive performance. Our focus is simple: elevate performance, deliver results, and bring Rangers back to where it belongs - at the top." Rangers CEO Patrick Stewart said: 'From my earliest conversations with Paraag and Andrew, I have been excited and confident in the shared vision and what it could mean for the future of Rangers. "Our focus now is on the hard work ahead, preparing thoroughly for the new season, appointing the right men's head coach, and ensuring we have the structures in place to support success on the pitch.'

Alejandro Garnacho 'filmed PUSHING fan' as Man United's miserable post-season tour hits a new low - just a day after Amad Diallo stuck his middle finger up at fans in Malaysia

Manchester United 's miserable post-season tour sunk to a new low as Alejandro Garnacho became involved in an altercation with a fan in Malaysia. New footage has emerged of the United outcast, who is set to leave Old Trafford in the summer after a spat with Ruben Amorim, appearing to 'push' a supporter as he strided through the streets of Kuala Lumpur. The video, first posted on TikTok, shows a moody Garnacho, wearing sunglasses and a golden chain, ignoring the fan as he asks if he prefers Lionel Messi or Cristiano Ronaldo. 'Bro, you pushed me,' the shocked supporter then exclaims. The incident heaps further misery on United, who were already humiliated after losing 1-0 to exhibition side ASEAN All-Stars on Wednesday. It comes just a day after Amad Diallo went viral for putting his middle fingers up at fans. 📸| Garnacho pushing a fan in Malaysia 🇲🇾 Think it's best that he's leaving in the summer he's ego is something else — UtdKev (@UtdKev8) May 30, 2025 The Ivorian was seen performing the obscene gesture as he left the team's hotel. The 22-year-old rushed to social media to admit he did not regret making the gesture and that it was in response to someone who shouted personal abuse relating to his mother. 'I have respect for people but not for the one who insults my mom…' he said on X. 'I shouldn't have reacted like that but I don't regret what I did. 'We had a great time in Malaysia with good people.' Meanwhile, Garnacho was brutally warned by Amorim that he needs to 'pray' he can find a new club in front of team-mates. Tensions skyrocketed after the Argentina international hit out at his boss for benching him in their Europa League final defeat to Tottenham last Wednesday The Red Devils went on to lose 1-0, with Garnacho only featuring for 20 minutes from bench and the Argentine failed to hide his frustration with Amorim as he admitted it had been a 's***' season for the club. His agent brother then added fuel to the fire by posting on Instagram that the winger had been 'thrown under the bus' by the Portuguese boss. Despite a turbulent week, Garnacho featured for United in their embarassing post-season friendly defeat to exhibition side ASEAN All-Stars on Wednesday before starting against Hong Kong on Friday. Fans are further convinced his days in Manchester are numbered after he appeared glum at a shirt signing event in Malaysia. Amad yesterday urged Garnacho to stay at United next season despite his fiery dispute with Amorim. Speaking ahead of their friendly against Hong Kong, Amad leapt to Garnacho's defence, claiming the dispute is not an issue for the team. The Ivorian said: 'Alejandro is a really good player and we need good players in the team. I know Garna really well, so I hope to have Garna next season. 'It is not really a big issue for the team. Everything is good now.' Although he is set to leave in the summer, he started in United's friendly against Hong Kong Garnacho was omitted from United's squad for their final game of the season against Villa and it would represent a remarkable u-turn if he were to remain at the club. His partner appeared to confirm his departure with a cryptic two-word message to fans on social media just hours before the Villa encounter. She posted a picture of a baby-sized United kit alongside the words 'last match', accompanied by a tearful emoji and a heart on Instagram. A sale would represent pure profit under financial fair play rules, as the winger came through the club's academy system.
