Rangers takeover complete as 49ers Enterprises seal deal

A statement confirmed the consortium was looking for a controlling stake while sources close to the deal told how it would likely be complete by June.
A major player in the deal has been Paraag Marathe, president of 49ers Enterprises and chairman of Leeds United, the newly promoted English Premier League side also part of the 49ers group.
American health tycoon Andrew Cavenagh is part of the consortium and has been at Ibrox more than once in the intervening period.

The deal has now been completed with an announcement made today as Rangers enter into a new era.
Andrew Cavenagh told the Gers website: "We are deeply grateful for the trust placed in us by the Rangers Board, shareholders, staff, and supporters. This club's history and traditions speak for themselves, but history doesn't win matches.
"We know that the true way to honour the club's heritage will be to drive performance. Our focus is simple: elevate performance, deliver results, and bring Rangers back to where it belongs - at the top."
Rangers CEO Patrick Stewart said: 'From my earliest conversations with Paraag and Andrew, I have been excited and confident in the shared vision and what it could mean for the future of Rangers.
"Our focus now is on the hard work ahead, preparing thoroughly for the new season, appointing the right men's head coach, and ensuring we have the structures in place to support success on the pitch.'

‘Rangers fans will hate me' – David Martindale reveals how he once helped European opponents ahead of clash with Gers

But he joked the Portuguese boss has forgotten who he is now he's in the big time with Man Utd. Martindale helped the Old Trafford boss get ready for facing the Gers while standing in at Braga and then sent him Livi's prep notes when Sporting Lisbon faced Aberdeen six months later. He revealed: 'I did my coaching badges with Ruben Amorim and Bruno Saltor, who is at West Ham now, so I know them both fairly well. 'We did it with the IFA and it just so happened that when I was getting up they were kicking about for breakfast too, so we used to sit together. 'It was a two-week intensive course doing the B and A licences, the year before Covid. 'Ruben was the manager of the Braga B team then the manager of the first-team got sacked, so he stepped in. 'He phoned me right after it because they got Rangers in Europe and asked what I could tell him about them. 'He wasn't able to sit in the dugout because we hadn't finished the whole course by then so they had to put an old guy who had his pro-licence there instead. 'Ruben wasn't allowed to take the team so he stayed away from it, I think he sat in the stand or stood behind the dugouts. 'Rangers fans will hate me, but I sent him our stuff because we'd just played Rangers. That's what happens in football, everyone helps each other out. I'm not going into my work relegated, says defiant Livingston boss David Martindale as they're left TEN points adrift 'Rangers beat them anyway - I think those were the only defeats he had as Braga manager in 12 or 14 games. 'On the back of that he got the Sporting Lisbon job - and in his first season he drew Aberdeen! 'I had him on the phone again asking me for my stuff on Aberdeen because we'd just played them before as well. 'I got my 'fit and proper' stuff through and Ruben messaged me 'great Davie, I'm delighted for you'. 'Fast forward to last season and he gets the Man United job so I messaged him to say well done, congratulations. 'I'm still waiting for him to text me back!! 'I keep checking my phone but it's never come through! 'It's brilliant he's got that job and I think with Ineos getting the structures there sorted, it'll be a great fit long-term.' Martindale keeps in touch with Saltor and revealed he even tried to get the ex-Brighton star to come out of retirement and sign for Livi. Celtic fans utterly baffled as David Martindale gets Hoops star confused with Man City hero in TV interview He said: 'Bruno was a great guy as well, he had just retired at Brighton when Graham Potter and Billy Reid went in there. 'So, me being Scottish, he reckoned I must have known Billy, which I didn't! 'I actually wanted to sign Bruno for Livingston. We did a few wee drills when we were on the courses and you're in them. 'I remember looking at him thinking he'd stroll it playing for us. He was 36 or something at that time. 'I asked him if he wanted to come here but he just laughed at me! 'I'm pretty sure I offered him a coaching job here as well, but he was in at Brighton and since then he's worked at Chelsea and now West Ham. 'We had a good group, we had Luis Garcia, Chris Samba, Gabby Agbonlahor, Craig Gardner and a few others. 'Covid happened during it so it ended up taking us longer to do it than it usually would have. 3 Amorim in the dugout when facing Rangers in 2020 Credit: Reuters 'On the Pro-Licence I had Antoine Sibierski and I got him up here to work with the lads but it makes you remember your age. 'I was telling the boys 'it's Sibierski, he played for Man City and Newcastle' but they had no idea. 'So I had to tell them he'd have had loads of French caps if it wasn't for Zidane! 'Meeting these people is what it's all about. He's at Troyes now, director of football there and we keep in touch. 'I really enjoyed doing them, it was difficult when you're in a job because of the time involved, but it's a great way to meet people and network. 'You keep in touch with the people in your group, everyone who does it is the same. 'This year is the first year I've not had the distraction of not having one to do because I've got all the badges now and I have to admit, I'm missing it. 'I hope they bring out another one, maybe an Advanced Pro-Licence or something. If they do, I'll sign up for it.' Richard Masters wants domestic bodies involved in Club World Cup planning

Manchester City, who lost in the round of 16 to Saudi Pro League club Al-Hilal, were the other English team to take part. Chelsea won the Club World Cup over the summer (Bradley Collyer/PA) With player welfare relating to the number of matches played during a season a major ongoing talking point, Masters concedes the true impact of the world governing body's new-look competition will only be determined during the forthcoming campaign. 'The Club World Cup in its current form – once every four years, 32 teams – has only just come in and I suppose the jury is out on how successful it's been,' he said. 'The leagues and the players have not been consulted at all on the timing, the scheduling of the competition. 'Whatever iteration of it may come next, we do need to be consulted on that because obviously it does have an impact on the scheduling of the Premier League season – that much is clear. 'We're asking for a seat at the table, for proper discussion for the leagues – not just for the Premier League but for all domestic competitions – when you're scheduling new competitions.' FIFA was initially founded to regulate the global game and run international football. Thomas Tuchel believes the Club World Cup will impact the title race (John Walton/PA) Earlier this summer, England manager Thomas Tuchel said the involvement of City and Chelsea in this summer's Club World Cup would hand the likes of Liverpool and Arsenal a 'huge advantage' in the title race. Masters believes there is greater appetite for the competition, which previously involved six to eight clubs and was staged during the Premier League season, among non-European sides. 'The actual impact of it, we'll have to wait and see,' he said 'I don't ever want to be in a situation where players or managers are having to make choices about which competitions people play in, because I think that will be the wrong direction to take the game. Richard Masters wants more of a say in planning (PA) 'Obviously, FIFA was put on Earth really to regulate the global game and to run international football, and the Club World Cup is a move into club football. 'It has its detractors in Europe but the wider world feels more comfortable with this concept because of its redistributive nature. 'My job is to work out whether it impacts competitions, in particular the Premier League, because I don't want to see our future altered by new competition in a way that we can't manage. 'There has to be evolution, there has to be change, there has to be more opportunity but it must be done in the way where all stakeholders have a view.'

Arne Slot sets Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi target for Liverpool star Florian Wirtz

Arne Slot casually dropped in the names of Lionel Messi, Cristiano Ronaldo and Mo Salah when talking about Liverpool signing Florian Wirtz's potential Arne Slot knows Florian Wirtz has the ability but he has laid down the challenge to the Liverpool new boy to show his robustness to reach the very top. The Reds boss casually dropped in the names of Lionel Messi, Cristiano Ronaldo and Mo Salah when talking about the £116m man's potential. ‌ But it wasn't any particular skillset of those three greats of the game that Slot was highlighting - it was their availability. The more games you are fit for the more games you can make a big impression in was the message ahead of life in English footballl. ‌ As the former Bayer Leverkusen attacking midfielder Wirtz prepares to begin his Premier League career on Friday night against Bournemouth, Slot offered his view on what he needs to do to fulfil his potential. ‌ 'Everything we expect is very positive but between expecting and realising something is different,' said Slot. 'Why is Messi and Ronaldo and Mo, why are they so highly regarded? Because they are always fit. 'Every single game they are fit and that is something that Florian first has to show in a league like ours. If he is able to stay to fit then our fans will see great moments.' If Wirtz gets anywhere near the regard Salah is held on Merseyside then he will have fulfilled his potential. But, in a summer of change for Liverpool with over £300m spent and more to come while nearly £200m coming in from transfers out, Salah will find differences in the way the team will play. Not least the absence of Trent Alexander-Arnold, who he played 70 per cent of his games in a red shirt with bringing his total tally of goals to 245 and counting. On Friday night he will have Jeremie Frimpong behind him and, when he is fit, it could be Conor Bradley. Salah seemed a bit isolated in Liverpool's defeat on penalties against Crystal Palace last week as he struggled to impact the game but Slot is not concerned by that. 'No the last time we were at Wembley he didn't play his best game as well,' said Slot, referencing the Carabao Cup final defeat by Newcastle last season. ‌ 'By the way Trent wasn't playing behind them then, it was Jarell [Quansah]. But even players like Mo can have a game where they maybe don't play how we expect them to play. 'The good thing for us is that it hardly ever happens, he is nine out of 10 times the best version of himself and sometimes it is also the quality of the opponent or the playing style of the opponent that makes it really difficult for him.' ‌ Slot cited Palace's low block and directness from open play posing problems for Liverpool. It is why he has tried to evolve the team this summer, as well as players wanting to move on. Wirtz, 22, is one player who can unlock any defence given his brilliance in the Bundesliga. Anfield will get their first competitive viewing of the Germany international in a Liverpool shirt and excitement is brewing on Merseyside about him more so than any other signing - and there's been plenty. ‌ Yet with it comes the pressure of the huge fee. Something Slot is not concerned about. 'He might be young but he already won a lot,' he said. 'Factually, we can see him as a young player but in terms of his experience, I don't see him as a young player. 'He won the league with Germany, won the cup, has played for his country numerous times and apart from that, his mentality is his biggest strength. 'That says a lot because if you see him play, you're like: 'Are you serious because he's so creative'. But how mentally strong he is, he doesn't get distracted at all by a transfer fee or anything else.'
