Kilmarnock boss hails match-winner Brad Lyons' professionalism after tough week
Kettlewell said: 'Brad's had a turbulent four or five days but he's come back in really, really focused to try and have an impact on the game, which he has done, he's had a big say on it.
'That probably makes it feel all the bit sweeter for him and his family, just to be able to sit in the house and enjoy the win but also the new arrival as well.
'So we're delighted for him as a football club but Brad's always known that as soon as the baby's here safe, that he moves on to his job, and credit to him, he's been first class in that.'
Kettlewell felt his side only played in 'fits and starts' but they made a flying start to the game when Ben Brannan's long diagonal ball played in Marcus Dackers to open the scoring.
'It's just brilliant vision,' Kettlewell said of the 18-year-old's assist. 'You talk about being tactical geniuses and all the rest of it, it's nothing to do with that, it's about your players understanding what you've looked at through the week and trying to identify a situation that will materialise, and he has done.
'But what's especially pleasing for me as such a young player in the infancy of his career is to identify it and execute it. He's got such a calm, composed demeanour to him. You just feel as if he's on top of his emotions all the time and that's a brilliant place to be for a young player, as well as being a good player.'
Dackers had been a threat even before his opener and Kettlewell was delighted with the 6ft 7in striker's all-round play.
'We are working hard for him to be good with his movements, be good with his feet, to be able to link the play really well, to be a threat down the side, which he is for his goal,' said Kettlewell, who lost striker Djenairo Daniels to a shoulder problem.
'So it's just trying to help him become that complete striker. He has obvious advantages, which we played to at times, but it's making sure that he's able to do the other aspects of the game which I thought he was outstanding at.'
United manager Jim Goodwin was frustrated with the manner of the goals conceded after seeing set-pieces cost his side against Hearts and Rapid Vienna in the previous seven days.
'The first one, it's just really poor shape behind the ball, distances in the back line far too big,' said Goodwin, who lost striker Max Watters to a hamstring injury. 'One big 60-70 yard diagonal ball over the top and it's a one-on-one.
'And then the second goal, it feels like it's talking about last week all over again. Big loopy ball into the box, unopposed header at the back post and then we're slow to react to the second ball. That's what's undone us.
'The goals that we're conceding at the moment are so avoidable.'

'Heavy', 'high-intensity': Mats Knoester on the training which has Aberdeen ready for Thursday-Sunday Europe demands
Aberdeen defender Mats Knoester revealed why he is confident this Dons team will be able to handle the gruelling Thursday/Sunday schedule which comes with action in Europe this time around. After lifting the Scottish Cup in May, the Dons are guaranteed Continental league action in either the Europa League or Conference League this season, to be decided by a late-August Europa League play-off tie. Several Scottish sides have struggled to balance extended European football with domestic commitments in recent campaigns – not least Barry Robson's Aberdeen when they competed in the Conference League group stage in 2023. Robson's Reds performed admirably against the likes of Eintract Frankfurt and PAOK, but suffered a dreadful league season alongside their Conference League efforts which ultimately cost Robson his job after the Euro matches came to an end. However, Aberdeen boss Jimmy Thelin – whose side rounded off their pre-season preparations with a 3-1 defeat to English Championship Ipswich Town at Pittodrie on Friday – have done the hard yards to ensure they can cope with their game-load in the months ahead. Knoester said: 'That's what we did a lot in pre-season – train under really heavy circumstances, a lot of high-intensity metres, so we really trained on that. 'We did everything we can to be ready for that (the schedule with European action).' Before their European adventure begins, Aberdeen will start their Premiership campaign next Monday with a tough trip to Tynecastle to face Hearts. Knoester – who signed for the Reds in January – has yet to experience the Gorgie venue, where the Dons have not won since 2017. Aberdeen did, however, beat Hearts at Hampden in the Scottish Cup semi-final on their way to lifting the trophy. Centre-half Knoester is not concerning himself with Aberdeen's long-standing Tynecastle hoodoo, and while he echoes manager Thelin's mantra of taking things one game at a time, he does expect Hearts to rival the Reds this term. Knoester said: 'The last few years, they're a good team. A big team as well. I think it's going to be an exciting game. It's not going to be an easy game away. 'Always the first game in the season is interesting to see how the teams are after the pre-season. 'I think we're aware that it's a tough game, away at Hearts. 'But I also think the past doesn't really matter. 'If I can go back to Celtic in Hampden (in the cup final) – we don't have a really good record against Celtic and then you win the game. 'In football, I don't think you should go too much back to the past, and then look forward. 'If we look a bit further, I think they (Hearts) are also one of the competitors. 'I prefer to just go week by week, but, of course, as Aberdeen, you're one of the bigger teams, and Hearts is that as well. 'So, in that way, I think we should compete with each other. ' In defeat to Ipswich on Friday, Aberdeen were exposed on three occasions by the relegated English Premier League outfit. While Knoester thinks the Dons' experimentation with a 'bit more extreme' high line designed to 'create pressure on them and take a bit more risk' was partly to blame for the increased spaces the Reds' backline struggled to cover, he also thinks Thelin's team can learn from their English pre-season visitors. He said: 'I think that was the goal, to have some big opponents, like Fulham and now Ipswich as well, especially going into Europe as well – we have a tough season coming. 'So I think if you want to improve something, you also have to play against the better teams, because they will show you also what's needed to be on that level. 'I think one big thing was consistency. If you see how consistent they are, and if they do make a mistake, they make up for it – they make a foul or they're back fast enough. 'If there's a rebound, there's somebody who taps it in, and we just miss it. Stuff like that – I think we can learn from that. 'You're one that sets a standard for yourself.'

Jimmy Thelin: Why Aberdeen are ready for Premiership opener at Hearts
Aberdeen boss Jimmy Thelin is convinced his team are prepared for Monday's Premiership opener at Hearts, despite the sides' contrasting preparations. Thelin's Scottish Cup-winning Dons, guaranteed European league football this season have been not involved in the Premier Sports Cup group stage as a result of their Continental commitments and have yet to begin their competitive season. However, the Jambos racked up four convincing wins against lower-league opposition in their League Cup section. Now managed by former Reds gaffer Derek McInnes, Hearts have also beaten now-English Premier League Sunderland and English League Two Crawley Town during the summer. Aberdeen, meanwhile, won their opening pre-season friendly against third-tier city neighbours Cove Rangers, but lost a closed-door bounce game at Premier League Fulham, before a 3-1 defeat to relegated English top-flight Ipswich Town at Pittodrie on Friday. While Hearts have been able to build up momentum, according to our columnist, Dons great Willie Miller, ahead of the Tynecastle showdown, Thelin believes his Reds are good to go against one of their expected rivals this term. Thelin said: 'We are ready for the season to start. We're looking forward to the season to start. 'Then during the season you always want to be better and grow – but we are fully ready for the first game of the season. 'I think we're going to be in four competitions this season, and I think as a player when you go out, you want to do well in all competitions. 'That is why the Ipswich and Fulham games helped us. It was quite competitive from our side, so I think that helps a lot, because they stretch us and they push us to get up the intensity. 'We are getting better and these games will help us going forward. 'I think also the first game of the season, all the emotions, all the spirit will also be there.' The Dons boss added: 'On Friday, the fans were at Pittodrie. It was around 13,000 people for a friendly game. It was amazing. 'I saw the players trying, so I'm not afraid that we won't be ready in a competitive way.' Despite Aberdeen opening their season on Hearts' patch, Thelin also implied his side will be going out to play their game, rather than adapt tactically to the hosts' approach. He said: 'We focus most on the way we want to play and the way we want to grow. 'But, of course, our analytic team has a good report on them and that's the topic for this week – go through all these games they've played so far, the ideas they want to do and then we prepare for that.' After the friendly reverse to Ipswich, Aberdeen centre-half Mats Knoester pointed to the Dons experimenting with a higher defensive line as a mitigating factor in the visitors being able to net three times. Manager Thelin concurred, but also highlighted other points – namely his team not stepping out quickly enough, and coughing up too many chances back to back – where improvements can be made. He said: 'Yes, we're trying to grow all the time and be more compact. 'I think some parts were quite good and still we have some small, small things to adjust to be better, but some parts were really good. 'But then in some moments of the game when we get, I think that's the first goal, then we get stuck in the moment when we don't really come up. 'They were using (exploiting) this really, really well. You see when they get time on the ball and accelerate the game, and it's really, really quick. 'These kinds of things are important – how can we be better to control this part of the game? 'It's important for us to grow in these parts – when we get hurt in the game with the first goal and (we) don't (let them) get one, two, three more chances in a row. 'We have this moment where we have to be more stable.'

Aberdeen's first pre-match press conference of the 2025/26 season, ahead of Monday's Premiership opener at Hearts, will be held at 1.15pm on Friday – and we are bringing you all of the key updates from Cormack Park. Jimmy Thelin's Dons will have to wait to kick off their top-flight campaign, and head to Tynecastle for a televised showdown with a Jambos side now managed by ex-Reds gaffer Derek McInnes. Aberdeen boss Thelin will be speaking with the media at the club's training ground ahead of the match – and his sophomore season – while one player will also talk to the press. Topics are sure to include attacker Pape Habib Gueye's exit and the Dons' hunt for further summer reinforcements – including their bid to land AC Milan's Serbian forward Marko Lazetic. As well as Monday evening's Hearts game and squad news, including injury updates on the likes of Emmanuel Gyamfi, Kristers Tobers and Ester Sokler, there is also likely to be some build-up to the Europa League play-off draw involving the Reds, which is scheduled for Monday lunchtime. 'But everyone else is available', Thelin added. 1.49pm: Thelin, reiterating what he said after the Ipswich friendly on Friday, on Hearts v Aberdeen, said – 'We are ready for an exciting first league game away against Hearts, to play against our away supporters in the atmosphere (at Tynecastle) in a competitive game. 'There are a lot of positive things to look forward to, and of course we feel ready for this game.' 1.48pm: Thelin – 'With this situation it's always difficult to say something. 'Sometimes players leave. It's a normal process of the game when they've been in a club some years. The Dons, who finished fifth in the Premiership – despite looking like contenders for second early in the campaign – won just five away games in the top-flight last term. If you discount their first three away games of the season, during their incredible start to Thelin's rein, it was just TWO. The good news? Aberdeen were unbeaten in four meetings against Monday's opponents Hearts last season, but the Gorgie outfit have made a strong start in the Premier Sports Cup under their new boss Derek McInnes – the long-time Dons manager. McInnes has guided his side to four straight wins, scoring 16 goals and conceding one, as they topped their section in qualification from the group stage. It should also be noted Aberdeen haven't won at Tynecastle, I think, since 2017. Alongside the SMISA, it is a real Reds bogey venue. 12.16pm: Of course, the main topic of the press conference at Cormack Park on Friday is to set the scene for Monday's tough Premiership opener at Hearts. Following Friday night's final pre-season friendly against Ipswich Town (3-1 defeat), Jimmy Thelin confirmed striker Ester Sokler was not in his squad due to injury. (However, he also said that about the now-departed Pape Gueye's absence… *eyes emoji*) Will Sokler be confirmed as fit again for the Hearts game, given Aberdeen only have him, Yengi and Peter Ambrose as recognised senior strikers on their books just now? The other fitness question marks going into Friday's presser revolve around Latvia captain and centre-back Kristers Tobers and new left-back Emmanuel Gyamfi, who both missed all of the pre-season games. Thelin's prognosis on their injuries – and the timeline for their return – has been vague so far. Maybe Thelin will give us more clarity today, but I wouldn't expect to see Tobers or Gyamfi at Tynecastle as things stand. 12.08pm: As Gueye leaves Aberdeen, the Dons have been ramping up their bid to sign 21-year-old Serbian striker Marko Lazetic from Italian giants AC Milan. The forward was a Dons target in January, and negotiations have been continuing ever since, The Press and Journal understands. But Milan are proving hard to pin down over Lazetic – who is not in the picture at the San Siro and spent last term on loan with TSC in his homeland. While there have been reports of AC demanding as much as four million euros for the forward, it is understood Dons chiefs expect it will take far less to land their man – who they view as a 'project' player in a summer where they have already signed 26-year-old Australia international striker Kusini Yengi. Will Thelin anything about the Lazetic chase? 12.03pm: Just like that, Gueye's move to Turkey has been confirmed by Aberdeen. 'We wish Pape all the very best with his transfer to Turkey, and we thank him for his contributions during his time at Aberdeen, notably his positive impact in the Scottish Cup final', said Dons boss Jimmy Thelin. 'We're pleased with our recruitment so far this summer and the work remains ongoing to bring in further reinforcements and improvements ahead of the window closing. We are still shaping the squad. 'We thank Pape for his efforts and wish him all the best with the next chapter in his career.' 11.58am: The very first thing Aberdeen boss Jimmy Thelin is likely to be asked about in his Friday presser is the impending departure of attacker Pape Habib Gueye for Turkish side Kasimpasa. It is understood the Dons will make a £350,000 profit on the 25-year-old Senegalese, pulling in an £850,000 fee, having paid Belgian outfit KV Kortrijk £500,000 for his services two summers ago. Gueye's transfer away from Aberdeen is expected to be confirmed imminently, but it is unclear how much Thelin, often tight-lipped about such matters, will say about the deal to the media – though he will likely discuss the frontman's contribution during the gaffer's year at Pittodrie.
