UN warns of high risk of abuses in Israel's Gaza operations

The Suna day ago
GENEVA: The United Nations issued a stark warning on Tuesday, stating that Israel's expanded military operations in central Gaza carry an 'extremely high' risk of serious violations of international law.
UN rights chief Volker Turk emphasised that permanently displacing Gaza's population could constitute war crimes and crimes against humanity.
'These Israeli airstrikes and ground operations will invariably lead to further civilian deaths and destruction of civilian infrastructure,' Turk said.
'Given the concentration of civilians in the area, and the means and methods of warfare employed by Israel until now, the risks of unlawful killings and other serious violations of international humanitarian law are extremely high.'
The town of Deir el-Balah faced intense shelling on Monday, following evacuation orders from Israel's military.
Initial UN estimates suggest between 50,000 and 80,000 people were in the area when the order was issued.
'The latest Israeli displacement orders, followed by intensive attacks on south-western Deir el-Balah... have added more misery to the suffering of hungry Palestinians,' Turk said.
'It seemed the nightmare couldn't possibly get worse. And yet it does.'
The UN highlighted that the targeted area includes humanitarian facilities such as clinics, shelters and warehouses.
Thousands have already fled, forced into overcrowded zones where aid delivery is increasingly difficult.
'I remind Israel that permanently displacing people living under its occupation would amount to unlawful transfer, which is a war crime, and in certain circumstances, may also amount to a crime against humanity,' Turk stressed.
He called for an immediate halt to military actions and urged Israel to ensure essential supplies reach civilians.
'More and more countries are joining the calls to shake us out of this nightmare,' he added. – AFP

NST Leader: Gaza ceasefire calls mean nothing without halting arms sales

FOREIGN ministers from 28 countries, mostly from the West, have condemned Israel for denying the Palestinians the human dignity they deserve, as they called for an immediate end to the atrocities there in a joint statement on Monday. Israel must comply with its obligation under international humanitarian law, it went on to state the obvious. Isn't the statement 21 months too late? Why wait until the Israelis killed 59,000 Palestinians to call for a permanent ceasefire in Gaza? And the irony is that some of the 28 countries are supplying weapons or weapon parts used to slaughter the Palestinians. Don't they realise the supply of arms is making them complicit in Israel's denial of Palestinian human dignity, not to mention their complicity in the genocide committed by the Zionist regime? Let's be blunt: these so-called seekers of human dignity for the Palestinians are standing on the wrong side of history. You just can't call on Israel to end the Gaza war — oh how they abuse the word — while supplying the genocidal regime with weapons. We have read such statements before, the most recent being in May — when the United Kingdom, France and Canada jointly threatened some unspecified action if Israel's onslaught continued. Expectedly, nothing happened and the Israelis went on to kill thousands of Palestinians. Even those who were desperately seeking food aid were not spared. On Monday, Israel launched a ground assault on Deir al-Balah, the main hub of humanitarian aid, a day after killing 81 starving Palestinians seeking food, media reports said. The joint statement may have been motivated by the killing of food aid seekers. The Israelis know that this statement, like the few that went before, was issued to appease a growing outrage among the domestic audience, including lawmakers. If these nations are truly interested in getting Israel to treat the Palestinians with human dignity that they deserve, they must do three things. One, stop supplying weapons to the genocidal Zionist regime. Two, hold Israeli leaders and their defence forces accountable for the genocide they are committing. Threatening or sanctioning the International Criminal Court (ICC) for issuing arrest warrants for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and former defence minister Yoav Gallant is a clear breach of international law. Three, stop giving diplomatic support to Israel until it civilises itself. We know that the United States doesn't care for the human dignity of the Palestinians, otherwise it wouldn't keep vetoing United Nations Security Council resolutions calling for a permanent ceasefire in Gaza and West Bank. Or sanction the ICC and its officials or those who criticise Israel for the genocide it is committing. But nations like the UK and those in the European Union that peddle rules-based world order? These have seen the genocide of Palestinians livestreamed. They know, too, the ethnic cleansing intent of Netanyahu and his ministers. Is this the reason for the occasional statements, an attempt to cleanse the conscience? Again, they know, too, the "war" — the abused word again — didn't start on Oct 7, 2023. The catastrophe that is unfolding today was evident from the start of the stealth birth of Israel in 1948.

"Gaza is Dying. And We Die With It': Al Jazeera Pleads to Save Starving, Silenced Journalists

REUTERS/Mahmoud Issa/File Photo KUALA LUMPUR, July 23 (Bernama) -- Al Jazeera Media Network has urgently called upon the journalistic community, press freedom organisations, and relevant legal bodies to take decisive action to halt the forced starvation and crimes against journalists and media professionals in Gaza. The network stressed that the plight of journalists in Gaza has reached a critical point, with many of them risking their lives while facing severe hunger and targeted attacks. Its Director-General, Dr Mostefa Souag, said the international community must act to end the suffering endured by journalists in the besieged enclave. bootstrap slideshow 'We owe it to the courageous journalists in Gaza to amplify their voices and put an end to the unbearable suffering they are enduring due to forced starvation and targeted killings by Israeli occupation forces. 'The journalistic community and the world bear an immense responsibility; it is our duty to raise our voices and mobilise all available means to support our colleagues in this noble profession. 'If we fail to act now, we risk a future where there may be no one left to tell our stories. Our inaction will be recorded in history as a monumental failure to protect our fellow journalists and a betrayal of the principles that every journalist strives to uphold,' he added. For over 21 months, the Israeli bombardment and systematic starvation of nearly two million people in Gaza have pushed the entire population to the brink of survival. Al Jazeera noted that journalists on the ground, who have courageously reported on the ongoing genocide, now find themselves fighting for their own survival. On July 19, Al Jazeera journalists began posting heart-wrenching messages on social media, signalling that their capacity to continue was waning.

IGP: PDRM Detects Cases Suspected To Be Orchestrated By Foreign Intelligence Agencies

CRIME & COURTS KUALA LUMPUR, July 23 (Bernama) -- The Royal Malaysia Police (PDRM) has identified external threats, believed to be orchestrated by foreign intelligence agencies, which could potentially compromise national security. Inspector-General of Police, Datuk Seri Mohd Khalid Ismail, said that among them were two incidents, suspected to be orchestrated by foreign intelligence agencies, namely the kidnapping of a Palestinian national and the possession of six firearms by an Israeli national. 'PDRM is always prepared to prevent and address various external threats which could impact national security, including agendas by foreign intelligence agencies which may attempt to interfere with or disrupt the country's stability and sovereignty. 'Various measures have been implemented to monitor the entry of foreigners at all the country's entry points, in close cooperation with the Immigration Department, the Border Control and Protection Agency, and Interpol,' he said, in a statement, today. Mohd Khalid said that the police are also paying close attention to the security of foreigners residing in Malaysia for extended periods, including permanent residents and those in the country for business purposes, such as foreign consultants. On the safety of the Palestinian community in Malaysia, Mohd Khalid urged them to remain vigilant, and avoid attracting public attention. 'To ensure the safety of Palestinians residing in Malaysia, they are advised to maintain a low profile to avoid becoming targets, and to promptly report any suspicious activity to the police,' he said. Mohd Khalid said that PDRM has also established strategic collaborations with other security agencies, through continuous information and intelligence exchanges at both national and international levels. 'PDRM remains committed to safeguarding Malaysia's security, and ensuring the well-being of its people at all times,' he said.
