Scots dad murdered in 'despicable' attack was planning to propose to girlfriend

Daily Record10 hours ago
Sean McKay had a one-year-old son with his girlfriend Chloe McCormick.
A Scots dad who was murdered in a completely unprovoked attack was planning to propose to his girlfriend at the time of his death.

Sean McKay, 23, was walking home from work when he was stabbed to death in Dalry, Ayrshire, on October 10, 2021.

Gavin McVey was found guilty of murder following a trial at the High Court in Paisley and sentenced to a minimum of 21 years in prison.

Police Scotland said McVey, 42, stabbed the young dad for "absolutely no reason other than his own wickedness".
The knife caused damage to his liver, diaphragm and heart. Despite members of the public rushing to help, he was found dead at the scene.
Sean's family have since taken part in a new Channel 5 documentary on the case called Murdered At First Sight.
His girlfriend Chloe McCormick told the programme she found out after his death that he was planning to ask her to marry him.
The couple had a son together, Oscar, who was just one-year-old at the time of labourer Sean's death.
Chloe, 25, said: "I just miss his laugh, hearing his voice. He made everyone laugh all the time.

"I have never moved on from it. Even now four years later I still think that there is nobody as good as him.
"After Sean died I found out he was going to ask me to marry him. He had spoken about it with his closest friends.

"I would have said 'Yes' definitely."
Chloe also said the prison sentence given to McVey should have been longer.
She added: "He was given 21 years but I've lost my partner, Oscar has lost his dad. It just wasn't enough."

Relatives of Sean told how McVey has never explained his actions and treated them with contempt when they came face-to-face with him in court.
The killer, who denied his guilt, shouted and swore and made an offensive hand gesture to the family as he was leaving the courtroom to begin his sentence.
Sean's sister Simone said: "Gavin showed us all the middle finger as he went back downstairs after being found guilty.

"It made us feel horrible but it showed his character."
His mum Debbie said: "Gavin McVey didn't give any reason. There was no reason why he could have killed him.

"He didn't even speak in court. I thought we would maybe get answers why (it happened). When the jury came back and said 'Guilty' it was brilliant. We all cheered."
As the jury read out their unanimous verdict, dozens of Sean's family, friends and loved ones clapped, cheered and said 'thank you' to the jury.
McVey denied his guilt throughout the trial and blamed another person who he was with for Sean's death.

However the court heard how he sent a text to a pal stating: "I killed some c**t" following the incident.
He had already attempted to cover his tracks by hiding the blooded knife in his mother's garden and disposing of his jacket before buying new clothes at a shop in Ayr.

Sentencing McVey, judge Lord Mulholland said: "You've been convicted of murder of Sean McKay - a young man with his whole life ahead of him.
"He was on his way home from work when he encountered you under the influence of alcohol with a knife.
"You've also delivered a life sentence of grief to his partner, son, mother, father, sister and other family and friends.
"This was a senseless murder. What you did was despicable and cowardly."
Murdered At First Sight will be shown on Channel 5 on Monday at 10pm.

Chart topper Sean Kingston jailed with mother over $1million fraud scheme

Beautiful Girls singer Sean Kingston and his mother, Janice Eleanor Turner, were convicted of a conspiracy to commit wire fraud and four counts of wire fraud. Sean Kingston has been jailed in Florida after being convicted of a $1million fraud scheme, along with his mother. ‌ The Beautiful Girls singer, born Kisean Paul Anderson, and his mum, Janice Eleanor Turner, were convicted of a conspiracy to commit wire fraud and four counts of wire fraud in March. ‌ He has been sentenced to three and a half years behind bars and was taken into custody immediately, reports the Mirror. ‌ U.S. Judge David Leibowitz also ordered that a restitution hearing should be held within 90 days. Kingston's sentence is to be followed by three years of supervised release. Leibowitz also sentenced the singer's mum to five years in prison last month, while Sean's sentencing was postponed. The case involved the pair falsely claiming to pay for luxury items, including cars, jewellery, and other high-value goods, by pretending to make bank transfers that were never processed. They managed to fraudulently acquire over $1 million worth of goods and money. Sean and Janice's trial took place from March 24 to March 28 in Broward County, Florida, and concluded with the jury deliberating for approximately three and a half hours before reaching their verdict, according to reports. They convicted them of conspiracy and multiple counts of wire fraud. The charges involved defrauding a car dealership out of $160,000 (£123,000) for a Cadillac Escalade, stealing nearly $500,000 (£386,000) worth of jewellery, and obtaining other goods like a custom bed valued at $86,000 (£66,000) without paying for them. ‌ Since the trial, Sean had been under house arrest with an electronic tag and had to pay a bond to be released from jail, while his mother remained in federal custody. Kingston, 35, and his mother were arrested in May 2024 after a SWAT team raided Kingston's rented mansion in suburban Fort Lauderdale. Turner was taken into custody during the raid, while Kingston was arrested at Fort Irwin, an Army training base in California's Mojave Desert, where he was performing. According to court records, Kingston used social media from April 2023 to March 2024 to arrange purchases of high-end merchandise. After negotiating deals, Kingston would invite the sellers to one of his high-end Florida homes and promise to feature them and their products on social media. ‌ Investigators said that when it came time to pay, Kingston or his mother would text the victims fake wire receipts for the luxury merchandise, which included a bulletproof Escalade, watches and a 19-foot (5.9-meter) LED TV, investigators said. When the funds never cleared, victims often contacted Kingston and Turner repeatedly, but were either never paid or received money only after filing lawsuits or contacting law enforcement. Kingston, who was born in Florida and raised in Jamaica, shot to fame at age 17 with the 2007 hit 'Beautiful Girls,' which laid his lyrics over Ben E. King's 1961 song 'Stand By Me.' His other hits include 2007's 'Take You There' and 2009's 'Fire Burning.' Join the Daily Record WhatsApp community! Facing jail, pastor found guilty of 19 charges of sexual and physical abuse against woman and children

A pastor is behind bars for the serial abuse of a woman and several children. Reverend James Haram put his traumatised victims through ordeals branded 'truly awful' by a judge. This included the 51-year-old raping the woman. The youngsters who were preyed upon were often struck with a wooden spoon or a rod. Haram - who had been with the Free Church of Scotland in Glasgow - was found guilty of a total of 19 charges of physical and sexual abuse. The crimes spanned between 1997 and 2020 at addresses in the city as well as Dumbarton, Dunbartonshire and in Ayrshire. Haram was remanded in custody at the High Court in Glasgow and will be sentenced in September. The woman regularly suffered at his hands. He called her names, punched walls, threw household items around in anger and threatened to hit her with a piano stool. He tracked where she went, checked who she was talking to and forced her to take part in religious activities. Haram once mowed over flowers the woman had taken time to grow. The pastor also suggested she should kill herself. The violence escalated with Haram grabbing and choking the woman. She recalled her 'whole body going limp'. Jurors heard the Haram would pester the woman into sex while making biblical references. She was told that she had to 'subject' herself to him. The victim recalled how she would sob with 'tears down her face'. But giving evidence, Haram claimed that 'every sexual encounter was consensual'. He claimed that the woman had 'many wonderful gifts', but that she had used them to 'turn against' him. He called her 'incredibly convincing'. But, the reverend, of Dumbarton, did accept there were 'occasional flare-ups of aggression'. The abuse of the children was said to include carrying out 'modesty checks' on girls to see what they were wearing. Prosecutor John Macpherson put to him that one girl gave 'a fairly graphic account of some savagery' of being 'regularly beaten'. He insisted this was 'wholly fabricated'. Jurors heard he flew into a rage while in a car with two children and claimed he would deliberately crash, killing them all. But, Haram told the trial: 'They knew I did not mean it.' Judge Tom Hughes deferred sentencing for reports. He told Haram: 'I think it is fair to say this has been a deeply distressing case for everyone involved. 'The jury has heard a different version of events from all the witnesses who gave evidence. 'It appears that (what happened) was truly awful - incidents of violence, aggression, all sorts of difficulties and the sexual offending which took place. 'During that period, you appeared to be living a life whereby you were acting in an official capacity as a man of the cloth. 'You have now been convicted of extremely serious offences which will obviously carry a lengthy custodial sentence.' Haram had been on bail, but was remanded meantime. He appeared to be clutching a Bible as he was led to the cells.
