
Robotic and drone tech make fruit picking and handling easier
Tevel's Flying Autonomous Robots (FARs) are redefining fruit harvesting by combining artificial intelligence with advanced computer vision. These drones navigate through orchards, identifying and picking only the fruit that has reached peak ripeness. Their ability to maneuver carefully around branches allows them to harvest without bruising or harming the trees. Unlike human pickers, these drones can operate continuously, working day and night to get the job done faster and more consistently.
Farmers benefit from detailed, real-time information about the harvest, including the size, color and ripeness of each fruit, all accessible through a mobile app. This data helps optimize harvesting schedules and reduce waste. FARs have already been deployed in orchards across the United States, Italy, Chile and Israel, where they have helped reduce labor costs by up to 30% while improving harvest accuracy. Multiple drones work together from a mobile platform, covering large orchard areas efficiently.
Beyond picking, these robots also detect diseases and track the location of each fruit bin, providing farmers with valuable insights to manage their crops better.
While Tevel's drones tackle harvesting, UC San Diego's GRIP-tape gripper remains in the experimental stage as a solution for post-harvest handling. Inspired by steel measuring tapes, this prototype uses layered "fingers" to grasp delicate fruits gently. Early tests show promise in handling objects like lemons and tomatoes without damage, but it has yet to be widely adopted in farming.
The gripper's motorized reels allow its tape-based fingers to extend, rotate and convey items like a conveyor belt. Researchers highlight its low cost and safety around humans, but further development is needed to integrate it into commercial packing lines or harvesters.
Tevel's drones are already transforming orchards, while the GRIP-tape gripper offers a vision of how delicate produce handling could evolve. The combination of real-world automation and experimental robotics highlights both the immediate benefits and long-term potential of agritech innovation.

Google's head of Android said the computer science major needs a 'rebrand'
Even Google's head of Android, Sameer Samat thinks the computer science major needs a rebrand. "It is thought of as, 'go learn how to do Java coding,'" Samat said of the major, adding that if that's what you want to do, "you don't need a degree." That's not how Samat, who studied computer science himself at UC San Diego, views a major in computer science. "It's definitely not learning to code," Samat said. "It is the science, in my opinion, of solving problems." While coding is a skill taught as part of the major, the discipline is more about breaking down problems, learning how to design a system, and collaborating on those tasks, Samat said. As software engineering becomes more automated, more individuals are beginning to question the practicality of pursuing a computer science degree. AI is increasingly handling fundamental tasks like coding, making it harder for some computer science graduates to secure full-time positions and internships. To be clear, Samat still thinks the degree is valuable and that "learning to code is really important," even as tools like Codex become more prominent and companies like Google and Meta and generate some code with AI. The head of Android said that when he learned to code, people had just stopped learning Assembly, a low-level programming language, and started coding in other languages. Samat said he still learned how to write code with Assembly because it was instructive on how the machine underneath works. There will always be a higher, more abstract language that computer programmers will learn to build new technology, Samat said. "Maybe someday it'll be natural language, where we're just talking about what we want, and something is building the underlying software for you," Samat said. But he doesn't think that time will come for "a while." Students shouldn't become computer science majors just because they think others will find it valuable, Samat said. The Android executive said that mindset won't necessarily be shared by their prospective employer, and job seekers should have "passion" outside of computer science. "I don't think that the degree enough is enough to make yourself relevant for some of the most important companies," Samat said, adding that you need to take it "to the next level." Samat draws from personal experience, having launched two startups in his early twenties, one of which led to an introduction to Sergey Brin. He said that building a startup early in his career ultimately made him a more effective contributor when he later joined Google. Whatever other interest you have, said Samat, "I think it's really important that it be something that you're really excited about going deep in and really becoming a 5% top expert in the field."

Toyota Dealers Got a Sneak Peek at the New Celica
Although we haven't seen any spy shots yet, Toyota has been discussing the potential return of the Celica for a little over two years. The company even dropped a blink-and-you'll-miss-it pseudo teaser during season two of its Grip anime series. An eighth generation of the affordable sports car is still in the works and is currently in 'pretty advanced development,' according to the senior VP of product planning for North America. Cooper Ericksen told MotorTrend that Toyota has running mules of the reborn Celica out and about. Not only that, but behind closed doors, dealers have been allowed to take an early look at prototypes and design sketches. The car's styling remains a mystery, but Ericksen noted that all the renderings flooding social media are wrong. As for what will power it, he didn't rule out a pure internal combustion engine, but he also didn't dismiss the possibility of electrification. Photo by: Toyota If it goes the hybrid route, the new Celica could compete with another resurrected nameplate beloved by enthusiasts: the Honda Prelude . A fully electric version seems unlikely, especially since Toyota chairman Akio Toyoda recently expressed a preference for sports cars that have 'the smell of gasoline and a noisy engine .' Although a new Celica hasn't been officially greenlit for North America, the fact that it's in an advanced development phase makes us believe it's on the way. If, somehow, it doesn't reach the United States, it wouldn't be the first Gazoo Racing product denied a US visa. America doesn't get the GR Yaris, a diminutive hot hatch that would undercut the GR Corolla here. There's also another forbidden fruit powered by the same turbocharged three-cylinder engine: Japan's Lexus LBX Morizo RR . The lack of photographic evidence likely means we're in for a long wait to see the next-gen Celica. In the best-case scenario, we can't imagine the car going on sale any earlier than 2027. But the Celica isn't the only fun car Toyota has in the pipeline. The company has already announced that the Supra will return, and something will surely emerge from the wicked mid-engine concept we saw earlier this year. Perhaps a new MR2? The last update on the FT-Se concept indicated it's still in development. Hideaki Iida, project manager for the Gazoo Racing Design Group, told sister site InsideEVs the spicy EV is due after 2026. Chief engineer Fumihiko Hazama mentioned a dual-motor all-wheel-drive setup, a next-generation battery pack, and a 0 to 62 mph (100 km/h) time of just three seconds. However, the most intriguing performance car from Toyota may carry a different badge. The GR GT3 concept is expected to evolve into a street-legal Lexus supercar, potentially named the 'LFR.' It's rumored to feature a newly developed twin-turbo V-8, although nothing has been confirmed. Expect this flagship performance machine to break cover sooner rather than later. While sports cars remain a niche market, Toyota gives us hope for a more thrilling future. Still, it raises the question of where a new Celica would fit in the lineup, considering the GR86 is here to stay and the Supra won't be gone for long. With the GR-branded Yaris, Corolla, 86, Celica, Supra, MR2, and the LFR all potentially coexisting, things could get crowded in a few years. Not that we're complaining, but the bean counters might.
