Safety campaign appeals to young and old drivers

Yahoo05-04-2025

Drivers considered to be high risk are the main focus of a new road safety campaign.
Devon and Cornwall Police said the Fatal Five campaign aimed to highlight the biggest issues causing crashes on the region's roads with a series of events taking place in April.
It said the five most common causes of crashes were not wearing a seatbelt, impairment such as drink or drug-driving, speeding, being distracted and careless driving.
The force said the campaign would focus on educating the youngest and oldest motorists, which officers said were the most high risk groups, along with how keeping fit could help driving skills and avoid crashes.
The events planned as part of the campaign include increased officer visibility on roads, covert patrols and social media messaging.
Police said data suggested older drivers were involved in a quarter of fatalities with the most common factors being failing to look properly and failing to judge another person's path or speed.
With younger drivers, the main issues related to speeding and distraction, including using a mobile phone, said officers.
Police also said staying fit would be another focus of the campaign as a person's age, experience, physical fitness and eyesight were "critical factors" to their driving ability.

Gull sips man's coffee before stealing his mug

A gull has taken revenge on a man who was installing anti-bird spikes in a Cornish town - by drinking his coffee and pinching his mug. Maintenance worker Darren Pardoe had been bird proofing houses in Porthleven when he stopped at a pub for a coffee on 3 June. He said he had been talking to someone before he turned around to find the gull helping himself to the hot brew. Before he could take action, the feathered thief flew off with the mug. "I think it had remembered me," he joked. More news stories for Cornwall Listen to the latest news for Cornwall Recalling the coffee heist, Mr Pardoe said: "I turn round and sure enough a seagull's got its beak in my coffee... next minute the bird picks up the coffee cup by its handle and takes off across the harbour with it. "It flew round the harbour and then landed on the water, put the cup down, and the cup just sank." Mr Pardoe captured a photo of the bird in flight with his coffee mug. Arrest after three deaths linked to blue pills

A 45-year-old man has been arrested by police investigating the deaths of three men in Plymouth. The Devon and Cornwall force said the man was arrested on Thursday on suspicion of being concerned in the supply of drugs. Police said two men aged in their 20s and 30s were pronounced dead at an address in Welbeck Avenue on Saturday and a third man, aged in his 30s, was found dead in a property on North Road East the following day. The deaths continue to be treated as linked and unexplained, and Plymouth City Council believes they are linked to blue pills being sold illegally as Valium.
