Rocket Lab launches Japanese Earth-observing radar satellite to orbit

Rocket Lab launched an Earth-observing radar satellite to orbit for the Japanese company iQPS on Wednesday morning (June 11).
An Electron rocket topped with the QPS-SAR-11 spacecraft lifted off from Rocket Lab's New Zealand site on Wednesday at 11:31 a.m. EDT (1531 GMT; 3:31 a.m. on June 12 local New Zealand time).
The Electron did its job, deploying the satellite into a circular orbit 357 miles (575 kilometers) above Earth roughly 51 minutes after launch as planned.
Rocket Lab called this mission "The Mountain God Guards." That's a reference to the QPS-SAR-11 satellite's nickname, Yamatsumi-1, which honors a Japanese god of the mountains.
Yamatsumi-1 will join iQPS' synthetic aperture radar (SAR) constellation, which views targets on Earth in all weather conditions, day and night.
"To date, 10 QPS-SAR satellites have been launched, and iQPS aims to establish a constellation of 36 satellites," Rocket Lab wrote in a mission description, which you can find here.
"This will enable the delivery of a 'NearReal-Time Data Provisioning Service,' allowing for the observation of specific regions worldwide at an average interval of 10 minutes," the company added. "This will make it possible to collect continuous images as data, and to accumulate data not only on 'Stationary Objects' such as land and buildings, but also on 'Moving Objects' such as vehicles, ships, and cattle and livestock."

"The Mountain God Guards" was the the eighth mission of 2025 and 66th overall flight for the 59-foot-tall (18-meter-tall) Electron, which gives small satellites dedicated rides to orbit.
Rocket Lab has now launched four missions for iQPS (which is short for "Institute for Q-shu Pioneers of Space"), and there are more to come: Today's flight was the third of eight contracted missions for iQPS expected to lift off in 2025 and 2026, according to Rocket Lab.

We are hoping that with a thinner and lighter form factor, Samsung has also paid some attention to the build quality on its successor. What could set it apart? As per leaks account @MysteryLupin, the upcoming Fan Edition phone by Samsung will come fitted with a smaller 4,500 mAh battery. For comparison, the Galaxy S24 FE is equipped with a 4,700mAh battery. To recall, Samsung only offers 45W charging on its top-end phones, such as the $1,299 Samsung Galaxy S25 Ultra. For comparison, the Galaxy S25 FE is going to cost nearly half as much. Recommended Videos In addition to faster wired top-up, the next Samsung 'budget flagship' will retain 15W wireless charging and the ability to juice up other devices using reverse wireless power share. From the looks of it, Samsung's next could easily beat Apple's iPhone 16e on practical merits. What else is on the table? On the software side, it will run Android 16-based One UI 8 software out of the box. So far, the latest One UI skin is only available on Samsung's 2025 foldable phones, while the S25 series phones are still awaiting their turn after the beta testing kicked into action a few weeks ago. As for the rest of the hardware, it seems not much is going to change, save for the year-on-year silicon upgrade. The Galaxy S25 FE is said to get the Exynos 2400 processor, which is slightly more powerful than the Exynos 2400e chip inside its predecessor. Over at the front, the phone will reportedly feature a familiar 6.7-inch OLED screen with a 120Hz refresh rate. In the imaging department, it will likely offer a 50-megapixel main camera, a 12-megapixel sensor for ultrawide capture, and a 10-megapixel sensor for long-range photography. If the price remains unchanged, somehow, the Galaxy S25 FE will have no trouble outshining the iPhone 16e at a $50 premium. So far, Samsung hasn't made any official announcement regarding the Galaxy S25 FE, but given the past launch history, we're expecting a market arrival in the coming weeks.

A household sweetener could hold the potential to create an anti-cancer treatment. New research from Hiroshima University in Japan revealed that stevia leaf extract could help fight pancreatic cancer cells. The leaves of the stevia plant (Stevia rebaudiana) are used to make stevia extract, a naturally sweet substance commonly used as a sugar substitute. The study, published in the International Journal of Molecular Sciences, investigated the anti-cancer properties of stevia leaf extract when it is fermented with a certain strain of bacteria. In laboratory research, the fermented extract exhibited "significantly enhanced antioxidant activity and cytotoxicity" against pancreatic cancer cells, the researchers revealed. This led them to believe that this substance could serve as a "promising candidate for pancreatic cancer treatment." Paul E. Oberstein, M.D., medical oncologist and assistant director of the Pancreatic Cancer Center at NYU Langone Perlmutter Cancer Center, shared his thoughts in an interview with Fox News Digital. "This is an interesting study because it evaluated something derived from a natural plant (stevia) and showed that it may have utility in stopping cancer cells from growing in the laboratory," he said. "As the authors point out, the actual stevia plant does not seem to have any benefit for stopping cancer, so they had to use a chemical process to change the plant and make it stronger with a fermentation process." "This is the process of how we discover new treatments – some of which turn out to be absolute game-changers." Oberstein recommended approaching this with caution, as it is unknown whether altering the plant will lead to side effects or toxicity. The study was not performed on humans, so there is "still a lot that's unknown about whether this will help patients," the oncologist added. As stevia extract alone does not have an impact on cancer cells, Oberstein said these findings most likely will not lead to any immediate changes in treatment plans. "The study suggests that if the stevia can be changed in the lab, it may have an impact, so hopefully they will further test this and determine whether this effect happens when tested in people and if it doesn't cause new side effects," he added. "I hope the researchers keep testing this in various formats and in people." Dr. Kristen Arnold, a surgical oncologist and pancreatic cancer specialist at the Orlando Health Cancer Institute, reacted to these study findings in a separate interview with Fox News Digital. "Pancreatic cancer is a very aggressive malignancy," she said. "And we know that even with the most aggressive of therapies, unfortunately, our outcomes are not good." "As a pancreatic cancer community, we spend a lot of time and there's a lot of ongoing effort into trying to find better modalities to treat this disease." Although more research is needed to confirm these preliminary findings, Arnold said she is encouraged by the study. "I think the data's very early to know if it's ultimately going to be a game-changer, but it's very exciting to know that we're finding some positive pre-clinical data," she said. "This is the process of how we discover new treatments – some of which turn out to be absolute game-changers and make dramatic changes in the lives of our patients." "Not all of it pans out, but it's a process of discovery," Arnold added. For those with pancreatic cancer, Arnold recommends seeking out appropriate clinical trial opportunities as new science develops. "The clinical trials are ultimately what determine how we treat patients on a day-to-day basis," she added. Fox News Digital reached out to the study authors for comment.

However, human activity has forced them out of their natural habitats. They've consequently turned to agricultural and aquacultural developments for stable food sources, like fish, rodents, and insects. Unfortunately, they've also eaten people's chickens, leading to a hostile relationship with local farmers, who have killed them in retaliation. Conservationists are trying to change the narrative, pointing out fishing cats' affinity for pest control. While this has helped prevent violence against the cats, the species still has low genetic diversity. And that's not all — scientists have also discovered microplastics in their bodies. "Fishing cats and people occupy the same ecological role of top predator," Rattapan Pattanarangsan, a program manager at a wild cat conservation organization, told Mongabay. "So, what happens to fishing cats is likely to happen to humans too." Why does the fishing cat's decline matter? As far as humans are concerned, take a look at fishing cats' diets. According to BBC Wildlife, the hunting of grey wolves at Yellowstone National Park set off a chain reaction: elk populations increased, overgrazed on trees, and caused the local beaver population's sharp decline.
