Ben White could finally make England return after Arsenal star's long absence
Ben White has not played for England since March 2022, but the Arsenal defender could finally make his return to the fold when Thomas Tuchel names his squad for next month's double header against Andorra and Serbia Ben White could finally be back in the England frame after nearly three years out in the cold. England boss Thomas Tuchel was at Old Trafford on Sunday and watched White as Arsenal beat Manchester United in their opening game of the season. White has not played for England after walking out on the squad during the 2022 World Cup in Qatar and did not return during former boss Gareth Southgate's reign. But Tuchel confirmed in March that White has made himself available again but injuries stopped him getting a recall last season. "He loves to be back in the squad but I think it is too early for him," Tuchel said. "I just think it's a bit too early given the seriousness of the injury he had. I'm delighted he's back, he's back now in training. "We were monitoring the process and huge compliments to the medical and performance department of the FA. And thanks to everyone at Arsenal to let us monitor closely so we are on it, speaking to Ben that we are delighted that he is back on the bench. "He had a Champions League match now in the second leg and I think now it's just the question about getting more minutes, more rhythm and then he has every chance to be back. He wants to be back, he's glad to be back." Now White is finally back and under consideration again, although it remains to be seen whether Tuchel decides three games before the first international break is enough for him to prove his fitness. But there have been encouraging noises from Tuchel about White's potential and defensive abilities to suggest he does see him as having a strong chance for the future despite strong competition from Trent Alexander-Arnold, Reece James and Kyle Walker. James had not featured for England since September 2022 before he was recalled in March and Tuchel is a big fan of the defender, having previously coached him at Chelsea. "We have a good relationship," James said of Tuchel earlier this year. "We won titles together and that obviously helps build a strong relationship. He's a winner, at the end of the day. I'm happy he has got the job and I think he can help the team a lot." Tuchel names his squad for next month's double header against Andorra and Serbia on Friday, August 29.

Amy Jones: England in a good place ahead of Women's World Cup
Amy Jones believes England are 'tracking in the right direction' for the Women's World Cup despite being second best in white-ball series defeats to India. Charlotte Edwards' reign as head coach started with England clean-sweeping a weakened West Indies but they were brought back down to earth by India, who edged both the T20 and ODI series this summer. Jones, currently competing for Birmingham Phoenix in The Hundred, remains upbeat ahead of the 50-over World Cup in India, with England starting their campaign against South Africa on October 3 in Bengaluru. 'It will be a great challenge,' England's wicketkeeper told the PA news agency. 'Lottie has put a lot of energy in and as a group, we've put a lot of time into our ODI game and how we want to go about it. 'We showed real progress – even against India – the scores we were getting were consistently higher than we've had in the last couple of years. 'Even though we didn't win the one-day series, we're tracking in the right direction. I think we're in a good place and everyone is really excited for the challenge.' England were eliminated in the group stages of last year's T20 World Cup in the United Arab Emirates after suffering just one defeat, albeit following an abject display against the Windies. The 50-over equivalent is not as cut-throat, with England playing all seven teams in one group with the top four reaching the semi-finals, and Jones accepts it will be more a test of endurance this time. 'That was quite brutal, wasn't it,' Jones said, reflecting on the early T20 World Cup exit. 'I think a 50-over World Cup is a totally different challenge. 'It's a big challenge of fitness and a lot of off-field stuff comes into consideration. If we stick to what we know works for us and we adapt to conditions well, it should put us in good stead.' Jones, who has flourished after being promoted to open in ODIs alongside Tammy Beaumont, counts Australia all-rounder Ellyse Perry as a team-mate and her captain at the Phoenix. Perry, is regarded as one of the greatest women's cricketers of all-time, and Jones admitted she has tried to learn from her approach to the game. 'She's a brilliant player,' Jones added. 'The standard she sets is so high. She's just so level. You wouldn't be able to tell whether she's had the best game of her life or not done so well. 'I am quite level on the whole but I probably present more level than I am. It's easy to have a bad couple of games and lose confidence quickly. 'It's not that obvious with me externally but that is something I have improved; trying to stay level, try to keep confidence high and not overthink too much.'

The result of that was there for all to see here as the England midfielder produced an outstanding, influential display. He even found time for some crowd-pleasing touches as he oozed confidence. Gibbs-White was given a standing ovation by Forest fans when he was subbed with seven minutes to go. His work was done as Forest had this game won by half-time. Seasoned striker Chris Wood carried on his form from last season with two goals - the first coming after just five minutes. And new signing Dan Ndoye grabbed a debut goal - a diving header from Gibbs-White's teasing cross. That was with £70million worth of new signings in the stands as James McAtee, from Manchester City, and Omari Hutchinson, who left Ipswich for Forest, were paraded in front of fans before the game. At least Brentford had some good news over the weekend, announcing a club record £42million deal for Bournemouth forward Dango Ouattara. Brentford managed to pull a goal back with 12 minutes to go through Igor Thiago's penalty after Ibrahim Sangare was ruled to have handled in the area by ref Peter Bankes. That was after VAR denied Forest a spot-kick for a similar offence before the break. Gibbs-White and Elliot Anderson drove Forest's performance from midfield and Brentford had few answers. Wood started the ball rolling when he pounced on a loose ball from Anderson's corner. Forest had to wait for their second goal, but it came four minutes before the break when Ndoye's header looped in - allowing the Swiss player to show off his 'lion' celebration. But Forest's third came from a quite superb pass from Anderson - and it was a thing of beauty. The ball was given away by Sepp van den Berg and Anderson reacted with a first-time, defence-splitting pass for Wood who took the ball around Bees keeper Caoimhin Kelleher before the Kiwi scored his second goal of the day.
