The Star19-05-2025

KUCHING: Sarawak Premier Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg has announced that the state government will offer free full-time higher education to Sarawakians, including those currently employed but who have not had the opportunity to pursue further studies.
Speaking at the state-level Labour Day celebration, he called on Sarawak natives to seize the opportunity to become undergraduate students and enhance their skills and knowledge of the latest technologies.
'You only need to be interested in studying to upskill. Anyone already working and holding a diploma can return to campus as a mature student.
'Learning is a lifelong process, especially as technology continues to evolve,' he said, Bernama reported.
Abang Johari said this initiative aims to develop Sarawak's human capital through higher education and skills training.
He emphasised that the free education offer applies only to full-time study and is fully supported by the state government.
Starting next year, Sarawak will fund free education for 64 selected courses at state-owned institutions, including i-CATS University College, the Centre for Technology Excellence Sarawak, University of Technology Sarawak, Curtin University Malaysia, and Swinburne University of Technology Sarawak Campus.

Telcos must rethink tactics

Published on: Tuesday, June 10, 2025 Published on: Tue, Jun 10, 2025 By: Bernama Text Size: 'No provider currently excels as a 'rewards champion', and most compete by matching features such as unlimited data and 5G access - providers that combine strong network quality, value pricing, innovative features, and compelling rewards stand to gain significant market share,' it said. Kuala Lumpur: Malaysian telecommunication companies (telcos) are advised to move beyond traditional tactics and design bold, digital-first strategies that resonate with today's discerning consumers to win in the mature and evolving domestic market, according to a study. A report from GrowthOps Asia noted that the nation's telecommunications industry is undergoing a profound transformation, driven by market convergence, the nationwide 5G rollout, regulatory shifts, and major infrastructure investments. Advertisement The report, entitled 'Winning in Malaysia's Mature Telco Market', revealed that the country's telco market is now highly saturated and competitive, with mobile connections exceeding 129 per cent of the population. 'We are at a pivotal moment in the telco market, where consumers are no longer just looking for connectivity - they want a single, inclusive provider that delivers a suite of services and meaningful value-adds. 'The players who pair innovative products with sharp, relevant go-to-market strategies will be the ones that win,' said GrowthOps Malaysia general manager Chris Greenough in a statement to Bernama. The report also stated that the market is polarised with CelcomDigi Bhd emerging as the dominant leader, holding an estimated 40 per cent market share following its 2022 merger, while Maxis Bhd is positioned as a premium provider, emphasising network quality and loyalty perks. In addition, a cluster of challengers like U Mobile Sdn Bhd and Unifi by Telekom Malaysia Bhd are competing aggressively on value and plan innovation. 'Consumer perceptions revealed that while network quality and price remain key decision factors, sentiment towards loyalty rewards programs could create an industry-wide opportunity for differentiation. 'No provider currently excels as a 'rewards champion', and most compete by matching features such as unlimited data and 5G access - providers that combine strong network quality, value pricing, innovative features, and compelling rewards stand to gain significant market share,' it said. The report further emphasised strategic white spaces for growth, including targeting underserved urban and rural segments, capturing younger digital-first consumers, leveraging multi-channel engagement, and embracing emerging subscription models. 'It also underscores the strong correlation between brand awareness, share of voice, and market share, emphasising the importance of digital presence and customer engagement in maintaining competitive advantage. 'Telco brands that understand these shifting preferences, act on regional and generational nuances, and double down on clarity, convenience, and credible communication will be the ones to lead Malaysia's next wave of mobile loyalty and growth,' said the report. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news? Ongoing Btg Rambungan bridge project to signal end of Kuching's reliance on ferry service

Aidel (front, centre) being briefed on the Rambungan Bridge works updates during the visit to the project site. KUCHING (June 10): Deputy Minister for Infrastructure and Ports Development Sarawak Datuk Aidel Lariwoo looks forward to seeing Kuching Division no longer relying on ferry crossings once the Batang Rambungan Bridge has reached completion. According to the Sadong Jaya assemblyman, the project is progressing well and is currently ahead of schedule, having currently achieved 5.84 per cent in progress rate – up from 3.76 per cent recorded last month. 'This means it is ahead by 2.08 per cent. 'We hope the contractor would maintain this momentum so that the project could be completed faster than scheduled,' he told reporters when met during his working visit to the bridge construction site yesterday. The Batang Rambungan Bridge is regarded as among the most critical components along the coastal road network spanning from Sampadi to Lundu and once it reaches completion, it will replace the existing ferry service – the last remaining ferry crossing in Kuching Division. Adding on, Aidil said the previous contractor had been replaced and the project was re-tendered via an open process, leading to a slight increase in cost due to updated market rates. 'The new contract is valued at RM82 million, (with works spanning) over a 30-month duration, but I am confident that the project could be completed earlier, similar to the Batang Marudi Bridge, which was finished nine months ahead of schedule. 'Efforts are being made to push the contractor to complete key components of the bridge, particularly the two main towers, ahead of the July deadline next year. 'Once those are completed, the remaining works should become much easier,' he said. The state deputy minister also revealed that there had been a noticeable increase in manpower and machinery on site, with the arrival of new tower cranes. 'This shows the contractor's strong commitment.' Aidel also shared with the reporters that upon the bridge's completion, the ferry service would be terminated automatically. However, he added: 'While ferries retired from other locations have been redeployed (to other sites) such as to Batang Paloh and Batang Igan, no decision has been made yet regarding the ferry currently operating at Batang Rambungan.' Moreover, Aidil said in line with the bridge development, plans were underway to upgrade the connecting roads, including a future two-lane stretch from the end of the Federal Authority Centre (FAC) road to the upcoming i-CATS University College campus in Trombol. He pointed out: 'Although the upgrade from the FAC road to the bridge has not started, it will likely follow once the bridge is completed, as part of ongoing efforts to improve the standards of the coastal roads across Sarawak. 'This is one of the last remaining major infrastructure projects in Kuching under the coastal road network. 'With the support of agencies like JKR (Public Works Department), the Resident's Office, and District Office, we are committed to seeing it reach completion smoothly.' aidel lariwoo Batang Rambungan Bridge development project infrastructure

Ringgit flat against the greenback

KUALA LUMPUR: The ringgit traded in a narrow range against the US dollar yesterday amid cautious sentiment in the currency market ahead of the US-China trade talks, says an analyst. At 6pm, the local note made a small retreat to 4.2290/2345 against the greenback compared to last Friday's close of 4.2270/2360. Market participants were awaiting the outcome of the trade negotiation between the two economic superpowers, said the analyst. Bank Muamalat Malaysia Bhd chief economist Mohd Afzanizam Abdul Rashid noted that China's exports fell to 4.8% in May from 8.1% in the previous month, with exports to the United States contracting 34.5% in May from a contraction of 21%. 'This suggests that the tariff shocks have taken a toll on bilateral trade between the United States and China,' he told Bernama.
